I like Jo Whiley (she lives about 7 miles up the road from me) and having heard that she's sitting in for Wrighty this week I decided to listen in while slaving away in my office.
I have to say that she's doing a very good job (in my humble opinion). She's more relaxed than the afternoon show regular, which I welcome.
I also love Ellie Goulding ("if I were a few blackberry seasons younger", etc etc) and the chat with her this Monday afternoon makes refreshingly good radio on 2.
For once. |

Blimey! We agree. I really like Jo Whiley, she plays different music to the others. Different is good. |

She's interested in the music she plays and she's interested in the people that create the music - and this comes across clearly in her presentation style which is heavily influenced by the late John Peel, with whom she worked a lot.
I'd be more than happy if she became the regular afternoon show presenter, providing that her show format didn't change either. Wishful thinking? |

I'm afraid I have to disagree, she may be OK during a late night slot I suppose but I find her totally unsuited to a daytime slot.
I don't dislike her but just find her really dull! |

I can see where you are coming from Gazmando, but I think it's maybe just that she has a completely different style of broadcasting.
I listened a bit this afternoon whilst sewing and quite enjoyed it. I imagine the interview with Nigella would have been completely different with Steve Wright! Nice to have just one person presenting a show though.

I guess it depends what you want from your daytime radio. For me, I want something different (as rachel says) from the dullness of 80s-style Wright and his 80s-style, sycophantic "posse". I also want someone who's a bit more insightful where music and musicians is concerned.
Whiley's just right for me, if not for the way she relates to her guests. The way Wright "bigs up" everyone really annoys me. |

I suppose I have a foot in both camps on this particular subject
I like Jo Whiley but at times she does tend to be rather boring in her presentational style but on the other hand it's great to have a female presenter in a prime time slot who has a great musical knowledge and who is obviously interested in the music she plays
I listened today in the car and thoroughly enjoyed her show - my only gripe is that she rather blotted her copybook by constantly banging on about the X Factor _________________ Are you ready for a Ruddles? |

Yes, that had the same effect on me. |

Jo is great on her evening show with New Music, Interviews and concerts, but if I wanted " More Music Less Talk " in the afternoon, I would tune to Magic. Bob Shennan seems to enjoy the female presence on the station, which isn't a bad thing. |

I found it interesting though that Ken and Jeremy were discussing "Steve's holiday" on Wednesday and expressed surprise that he was in the building. Did Wrighty dash back or something? |

He said himself on-air that he "nipped over to the States at the weekend" - presumably to do what he regularly does, which is to listen to New York radio stations in order to pick up ideas for his own show. I guess he listens only to 1980s-format stations. |

I find she's a bit dull, the music can be OK but the interviews etc aren't up to much. I am fed of hearing 'Jo Whiley presents', what exactly is that but appearing at the start and saying a few words ? |

Steve had another Monday off on the 19th November with Jo covering. Does anyone know why he seems to have taken less time off this year? |

Are you sure he's taken less time off Mark? Seems like there is always someone sitting in for him.

That's good news as far as I'm concerned as I can't stand him and switch off immediately! Not that I listen that much to Steve Wright either, but I leave him on if I'm driving.

I enjoy listening to Steve Wright, he's unpretentious and doesn't take things too seriously. He may be stuck in the 80s but on the whole the music he plays is a damn sight better than what, say, Ken plays.
As for that oaf Tarrant, he clearly enjoys too much BBC hospitality before the show, shouting and bellowing at his studio colleagues and his callers and openly criticising others' musical tastes, ie anything that isn't AC/DC. He makes Evans look vaguely acceptable. |

What a pleasant afternoon hearing Jo covering for Steve on Radio 2. She will also be covering this Monday too. |

She did OK apart from constantly banging on about that non entity of a guest she had on after 4pm - he exactly typifies what's wrong with this country today - a fashion adviser - in a recession - my advice to him would be go and find a proper job _________________ Are you ready for a Ruddles? |

I had the misfortune to hear that bit. I do like his Chinese Cooking programme, though.
Gok Wan, that is. You can get a decent anagram of his name...not too difficult. _________________ life is what happens to you while you're busy making other plans |

Jo is covering for Steve from 8th July for the whole week. Craig Charles is covering Jo show. Seems strange - " Steve has one week off then back a week and off a week." |

Thanks for the warning
I find her evening show has too much reading of texts etc.
I don't listen much to Steve Wright these days so no great loss. |

I caught Craig Charles a few weeks ago when he was doing Jo Whiley's show and I enjoyed the one I heard. It's not a show I normally listen to though unless I'm in the car.
