I think Don came to the end of the usual 13 week run and for some reason Jools Holland didn't return for the intervening next 13 week run. I don't listen when he's on so maybe it isn't a show that would be able to be made with the current restrictions. I just assumed that they decided to repeat some of Don's shows until he was due to come back.

Here you are, ladies. The chat starts around 1:27:00 into the programme. A couple of seconds before, to be precise. The whole show is good. I find him infectious, while the last 30 minutes is a must. I also blubbed at the beautiful Beth Nielsen Chapman song not long after the Michael and Don. As I said, it's an emotional time.

He's had a rough time what with Covid 19 and Shirley's death, and at his age.
I'm quite happy with repeats of Don's show. Much better than Jools's offering.

Tonight's show is the first of a new series, great news.
Now the bad news, Don just announced that this will be his last series. No reason maybe he'll expand later on but I wonder if it has been his decision or the Beeb's?
Make the most of the next 13 weeks!

I didn't listen last night, have it recorded on the Sky Box and will probably record it to the laptop, so I don't know if he mentioned again that it will be his last series. I can't imagine that he hasn't had any emails from listeners saddened by the news.
There was a letter in Radio Times (I mentioned it on the Monologues thread) with a comment from BBC saying there was a ban on using actors over the age of 70. Knowing the Beeb I guess they have carried it over to the radio. Johnnie Walker could be the next to go if that is the case and Bob Harris and Tony B too.

A very nice interview with Don on Steve Wright's show today (Mon). I just happened to get into the car and radio came on playing To Sir With Love and then on came Don! Was about 3.40 ish so start about 1hr mins on iPlayer.

Raver, thank you for the link to Steve Wright's interview - very interesting and enjoyable. Listening to last night's show when he was talking about it being his last series, he used the word "disappointing" which made me think he would have wanted to continue and that the dreaded axe had been wielded. A crying shame if that was so.
I hope to goodness we are not going to get more Jools Holland as I tried his programme and gave up. I do feel it is so important to keep the Great American Song Book going and Don was quite right in noting how recognisable the singers of that era were and still are, compared with so many of today's singers who are minor variations of each other. |

Thanks Eileen. As happy as I am with a plaudit or two, it was Helen who alerted us to it! You're dead right about the Great American Song Book. I watched the Ella Fitzgerald BBC 4 documentary Just One Of Those Things this week and it said something that was obvious, but hadn't occurred to me. It was that the song book is, in effect, America's 'classical music', as it's such a young country. Something like that. And I cannot recommend the documentary highly enough.

Apologies Eileen - don't know how I missed that   - perhaps my phone rang when I was reading the thread.
The word disappointing was very telling - I don't think he's going under his own steam. Perhaps he doesn't think it worth a fuss and would rather leave in a quiet manner.

That's OK, Becky . Yes, he is the only one who plays "our kind of music" now, quoting dear David Jacobs.
I would love to have Russell Davies back again, with the music programmes he used to do which of course were axed. I don't mean the ones in which he interviewed a singer and interspersed the chat with tracks but him on his own with all sorts of background info about what he was playing.
I dread to think who is going to replace Don. I suppose we'll have Moira Stuart for another series which will be mostly OK - but then who? Please, please, please not Jools Holland . |

I though Moira stopped when Evans left and she went to Classic FM which is why we had Jools.

Not sure where Moira went but Jools took over her slot and not sure why apart from C 19 as to why it stopped.
Now I've not listened to this but heard Richard Allinson mention at the end of last week that he had interviewed Don about his book for the Magic Radio Book Club podcast. Found the link which is here https://planetradio.co.uk/podcasts/magic-book-club/
It's the 22 Jul edition if there has been another one before you get to listen.
Son't suppose he'll mention R2 but you never know!

I just listenen Eileen and I just wish it had been longer! I was left with the impression that Richard would have talked for the whole length of the podcast if he'd been able. I'm a fan of his so would have enjoyed it!

So there I was, standing at the sink, late on Sunday night, melting under this relentless heat we're having down here, having just switched on the radio out there, when I heard this amazing singing. Never heard it before and I thought to myself who could it be? Vic Damone? Funnily enough, he came up later in the programme. I was amazed when Don said who it was!

Loved hearing Fred Astaire and Jimmy Durante on last week's programme. I've had an earworm all week of a song Don played. Too Late Now by Jack Jones. It was vaguely familiar to me but hearing it on his show made me realise what a really lovely song it is.
I'm looking forward to hearing what he chooses as the Tracks Of His Years - thanks Helen. |
