I enjoyed Don's first programme last night. I approved of his eclectic choice of music and I'm sure David did too, as Don said he would be listening.
But ... oh dear, it has left me with an earworm. Don't laugh, but it's "Don't Laugh At Me 'Cos I'm A Fool" by Norman Wisdom  . |

I will try and catch Don on iplayer, and avoid that tune! I've succeeded in not remembering how it goes

I enjoyed Don's programme. A worthy successor to David, I thought.
Fortunately I managed to miss Norman Wisdom. Then again, I always was a rotten shot!

Eileen I really wanted to like this programme but it didn't do it for me last Sunday night. I was tired and switched off before Norman Wisdom. I'll try again this week and hope I like it a bit more!
I'm trying to remember if Alan Boyd is still producing the show? Can't remember if Don mentioned it on Ryan Tubridy last week. Alan seems to be the producer of his show on Saturday as he is pictured with him and Lisa Stansfield today.

Not sure if it's me or if the show has improved but I'm enjoying Don Black on Sunday evenings now.
Enjoyed the 2 Gilbert O'Sullivan tracks last night, one by Andy Williams and the other by Gilbert himself.
Anyone else listen?

I forget about this programme,Helen, but after seeing your post have put it on Listen Again and have already (in the opening two numbers) been treated to songs by Nat King Cole and Billie Holiday.  |

I listen every week and have been enjoying the music he plays. It suits me just fine as a way of finishing the weekend.
He can never match up to David of course, but then no one could. Still, Don is doing a good job and I hope he continues. I seem to remember that he was scheduled for a certain period but I can't remember what was said. |

| Don was originally scheduled to present until October but it seems that this has been extended. I'm also enjoying the music, though he does have a tendency to name-drop virtually every link. |

| Last night's programme was a gem! It was all Irving Berlin's music and there was an interview with one of his daughters. It's well worth a listen. |

PS Did you know John Wilson's 'A Swinging Christmas' is on BBC2 Christmas Day at 1.20? A repeat I know but I deleted my original recording so may set the box again.

I watched "Swinging Christmas" too Helen.
I thought it was absolutely brilliant, I'd love to go and see John Wilson as it must be even better live.
Watched the Don Black tribute show on BBC4 last night, really enjoyed that too. Slightly spoilt by Eliza Dolittle singing "The Man WIV The Golden Gun", the singing was OK just can't stand it when people say "Wiv" |

Having flagged it up, I forgot to watch so caught up today. I found Don Black very interesting and I mostly enjoyed the songs, except that I had to resort to subtitles as I couldn't always hear all the lyrics - especially from the girl singers. The lyrics were the whole point of the tribute after all.
I loved Richard Stilgoe's song about Maxine and her lack of a rhyme near the end. |

I watched some of this on Friday night and caught up with the rest tonight.
I thought some of the vocal performances,early on, were a bit weak and was a little disappointed.
It did pick up though and I loved seeing Marti Webb (someone on the POV board said she is 68 or 69 ...she looked terrific ) singing 'her' songs although my very favourite version of Tell Me On A Sunday is by Michael Crawford..

I've just read this on-line,Eileen
Why the hat..? Gregory States the reason for the (part kangol hoodie & part modified flat) cap is as it's role as security blanket , refusing to be drawn on more detail he simply refers to it as his 'jazz hat'

I couldn't work out what a miwlyorn was!
I thought the performances were mixed. "To Sir, with Love" was ruined because the singer seemed to have adopted the current trend of confusing feeling with shrieking. "Born Free" was awful. All through that and "On Days Like These" I was thinking "That Matt Monro was a damned fine singer"
On the plus side I liked Richard Stilgoe, Katie Mellua wisely didn't try to out-Bassey Bassey and came up with something original, and Michael Ball proved that he can still hit that last note. The revelation though was Marti Webb. Nearly thirty five years on and her voice sounded just the way it did back then.

One of the many things that makes me grateful for Listen Again Eileen. I never miss it. Just a shame that Matt wasn't more appreciated when he was alive

I'd never heard the Michael Crawford version before, Becky. Wow! He adds a different dimension to it...and I never thought anything could surpass Marti Webb's. So I've just ordered The Ultimate Collection...at just over three quid in total, it'd be rude not to!
I wish Mr Porter would wear a different hat.

| I shall miss Don Black, his music choices and his longterm first-hand knowledge of the business. I shall listen to Moira as she sometimes plays tracks I enjoy but she can't match up to Don's knowhow, experience - and name-dropping . |

| A lovely final programme in Don's current 13 week stint. I had tears in my eyes at the end because he said that every time he comes to the BBC to record one of these programmes he feels the presence of David Jacobs around the place - and then he played Robert Preston's I Won't Send Roses. |
