I thought he started on January 21st? At the time he spoke to Helen May (in the book shop), he said he "believed" he would be on at 7pm Sundays. Knowing Lesley Douglas, she probably hasn't thought of a suitable slot for him yet and will make a last minute decision like she did with Russell Brand.

So long as they leave Janice Long alone then I'm not bothered. I reckon David Jacobs might be heading for retirement, so maybe Titchy will be on 10pm - midnight Sundays with Sheridan Snooze being cut back by 30 minutes?

I'm sure Alan said early evening when I spoke to him. His 2 previous specials have been at 7pm ish so I would presume that they will put him where he's been tried out before.

He seemed quite chuffed that I'd asked if he was doing his usual show on R2 and said I was the first person he had told.

He was very nice to talk to.

And your news about Alan Titchmarsh is most welcome too. Not that I desparately want Alan to REPLACE anyone, but if someone IS retiring it is gratifying that Alan is taking over a 'light' slot and not, say, Sharron Osbourne Shocked

I know a lot dislike MFY but been listening tonight and I've got to say I enjoyed it more the the preceding show.

One of the pieces was the Vienna Philharmonic conducted by Willi Boskowski. I once had to re route his airline ticket and he was a charming man. John do you know if he is still alive? If he is he will be a fair age.

Helen,

Willi Boskovsky died in 1991. I have quite a few of his records when he was a virtuoso violinist. There might be somethig of Willi on youtube, I've used the spelling that was used in the 1960's.

I thought that would be so, sadly. I couldn't remember the spelling and was nowhere near the couple of CD's that I have of him. One is mostly Strauss.

At least 2 of the tracks played would have easi;y been on the playlist of Ed Stewart's show, If I Ruled The World Harry Secombe, Thank You Very Much from Oliver and another by Ron Moody.

It's the music that carries you on show's like that. In many cases the presenter is incidental.

He is doing a documentary on Gilbert & Sullivan for R2 on Sunday 7th Jan at 7pm before that. I wonder if MFY will be back for a final time on the 14th or has the last edition already been broadcast?

From Sunday 7th January, 2007, Alan Titchmarsh begins hosting a 3-part series entitled "Kicking the Establishment". The first show will feature Gilbert and Sullivan.

These shows will be broadcast between 7.00 - 8.30pm, Sundays. Then from January 21st, Alan starts his new Sunday night show although no fixed time slot has been revealed. So, it looks as if Melodies for You has been axed after all!

In a word - Excellent. I listened to it all, which meant that I missed part of the footy before 'waking the dead'. It was worth it, especially the patter songs. If G&S were alive today, they'd be doing 'Have i got news for you'

I only caught part of the show, and will do some listen again, as this was a very detailed examination of G&S, plots, libretti and the whole thing, very entertaining Exclamation

I only heard the first 60 minutes.

I thought it was quite interesting but it did jump about quite a bit in time and themes which was confusing for a non-expert. Equally it seemed to suffer a bit from the mandatory celebrity talk heading syndrome that no modern documentary is complete without having.

I'm not sure if a 90 minute slot works for radio documentaries, if they did 4X 60 and cut out some of the recaps and padding I think it might work better as I find my mind wandering after more than a hour.
