I watched some of these programmes and the Johnny Cash TV show was the best in my opinion, with guests including Neil Diamond, Eric Clapton, Jerry Lee Lewis, Linda Ronstadt, Roy Orbison and Neil Young. |

I've always liked Johnny Cash, going right back to the sixties when he made really good albums with fantastic lyrics such as "Talking Leaves".
Like many of my musical heroes though, I didn't like him so much in his later years although there were undoubtedly some great songs recorded then too.
I recorded and watched a couple of the shows myself including the TV show you mentioned. It was ok, and I enjoyed watching Johnny in his prime, a good strong voice, particularly compared to Mr Dylan...
I thought the Clapton team up was a little uncomfortable but it was good to see the Derek & the Dominos line up!
I wouldn't keep the recordings though, I wasn't keen on the rest of the 70s stars... to look at anyway!
Sadly missed is Mr Cash.. and I still can't bear to listen to "Hurt".. way too sad for me. _________________ Johnnie Walker read out my message on Pirate Radio! 13/8/07

I know what you mean. When I first heard 'Hurt' I thought how unwell he sounded on that track. At the time I certainly didn't know he was going to croak soon afterwards. The album it came from had the same producer as the Neil Diamond album that came out around the same time (I forget the title) and, to me, he managed to make Neil sound rather unwell too!! Thankfully Neil Diamond is still with us! _________________ Lord Evan Elpuss, Your ideal job is a Lumberjack.

unwell and also a man who to me, had lost the will to live, painfully missing his wife and reflecting how pointless the once important things in life really are.
I used to love JC's looks and his general charisma which was shown in the short clips in the video to Hurt (particularly the clips of him on the steam locomotive and loving every second of it.. I have that full video and he was bubbling with enthusiasm about the US railroads) but here he was, a sullen man in ill health.. a shadow of his former self.
Applies to us all I'm afraid. _________________ Johnnie Walker read out my message on Pirate Radio! 13/8/07

Yes, I never agreed with those who thought his last work was enjoyable. I found it painful to listen to, and painful to watch. Much preferred to remember him as he was. _________________ Minx

Just bumping this thread up to the top to mention that Sky Arts 1 are showing back-to-back Johnny Cash shows on Christmas Eve. There are some Christmas specials and his concert recorded at San Quentin. |

Film4 have been showing 'Walk The Line' often - to the point that whenever Hazel in Emmerdale talks about 'my Jackson', I think of Johnny and June Carter's song, as in 'We got married in a fever, hotter than a pepper sprout...' _________________ We are loonies and we are proud!
