The Kinks' You Really Got Me was a hit in 1964. Ray Davies reckons, "I was literally born when that became a hit I had an identity." As you might expect from a film about a songwriter renowned for the wit, subtlety and sheer poetry of his lyrics, this edition of Imagine is intelligent, civilised and startlingly honest - mainly because the introspective Davies has no problem talking about or analysing himself. He's recently collaborated with artists as varied as Bruce Springsteen, Paloma Faith and Metallica on an album drawn from his extraordinary back catalogue, but this portrait takes us back to the very beginning. Some of his stories are desperately sad, such as the one about the death of one of his sisters while dancing at the Lyceum Ballroom in London when he was a teenager, a tragedy that inspired Come Dancing. But then Davies is a thoughtful rather than a laugh-a-minute interviewee - while footage of him strolling unrecognised through London's streets, humming his hits and musing on his life and his writing is both intimate and revealing. Superb.

A brilliant film by Julien Temple starring a wonderfully complex leading man...I LOVE Mr Davies..I recorded this as well as watching it and it's one for keeps....LOVED it!!
Waterloo Sunset would without a doubt accompany me to my desert island ..."I am in Paradise" listening to it ..it's perfect
Aside from Ray what an ordinary next door sort of fella Mick Avory came across as.

I loved last night's "Imagine", which was superbly directed by Julien Temple. What a fabulous insight into one of our greatest songwriters.
Excellent stuff. What amazes me is the number of people who say "The BBC is a waste of money. All they ever show is rubbish". Really? |

This left me feeling sad - the bit about his nervous breakdown had me feeling I'd had times like that (particularly in relation to a boss). _________________ We are loonies and we are proud!

Will he have Claire Hamill on as one of the performers? As far as I know her albums for Konk, 'Stage Door Johnnies' and 'Abracadabra' haven't been reissued by Esoteric. _________________ We are loonies and we are proud!

It was indeed a fascinating programme. The Kinks were my favourite band in the 60s, along with The Beatles and The Stones obviously.
I still have all their old singles in the pink Pye sleeves. sadly never played nowadays.
As a songwriter Ray was up there with Lennon/McCartney, Jagger/Richard, Townshend and Marriot/Lane in 60s Britpop.
But for social observation he was/is unique, with those lovely lyrics about the English (British?) way of life. 'I'm off to Blackpool for my holiday.' |
