Seems they are putting radio onto a separate system from iPlayer John.
I think it worked better then, the programmes were uploaded faster for
one thing.

Oh well- back to my little black box. They would do better to bin the iplayer for TV programmes and keep it for radio but they do say that video killed the radio star and that history repeats itself- so it doesn't look good does it? |

I suppose that we should applaud the removal of all the self-indulgent, trivial and trashy parts of the online behemoth, but it does read as though we shall be left with a pretty dry and unexciting website.
How long before they sell it off, and you have to start paying for TV i-player? _________________ Ron |

Maybe someone should start a Keep Radio on iPlayer campaign on Facebook, the way they did for 6 Music? It worked I'm sure we won't be the only ones who will certainly miss the 'listen again' facility. I've no idea how it works as I don't like Facebook.
If not I can see a massive sales boost in radios that can record and the Sky box will be pressed into action for most programmes.

I'd miss the "Listen Again" facility, so hope that is retained. _________________ MiS |

This is worrying/confusing. Why announce that Radio is coming out of the iPlayer without saying what'll replace it. "We'll develop a new stand- alone product" but without saying what the timescales are.
What on earth does "the automation of bespoke digital radio sites 1Xtra, 5 live sports extra, 6 Music and Radio 7" mean? The Guardian reports this by saying that the sites for these stations will close. |

Oh well that seems to put our minds at rest. I vaguely remember Jem Stone from one of the POV sites? Maybe it was the radio one?
I did think it rather odd to stop it altogether. I must admit I preferred it when the radio content was separate from TV.

The phrase 'putting the N into cuts' from Russell Howard's 'Coalition Musical' sketch comes to my mind! As does Ten Pole Tudor's 'Throwing The Baby Out With the Bathwater'. _________________ We are loonies and we are proud!

Looks like their plans are to have exactly what is available in iPlayer in a new 'Radio and Music' section of the website, but specifically designed for radio (so integrated with podcasts etc). Effectively giving radio its own brand.
Which in a way is a good idea; I use the iPlayer a lot for both TV and radio, but when talking about radio I still tend to refer to it as "Listen Again", which was the branding to the on demand radio pre-iPlayer.

If you're referring to the bit at the end where he's talking about UKRadioPlayer, then yes. I believe this will launch in February (as something seperate from the BBC website) but for now more info at http://www.ukradioplayer.info. _________________ Fred Hart

I can't help thinking that this might not be that bad an idea. Maybe now the BBC can focus on it's prime function,ie producing worthwhile TV and radio programmes. I feel that in the last few years the Beeb has been overstretching itself and as a result the quality has suffered.Yes we do live in a multi-platform age but by trying to utilise every strand of media available I think they've ended up with lots of inferior product. Many of the on-line stuff has been done just for the sake of it. Has every progrmme really needed its own webpage or site? By overstretching itself some of the good ideas have failed miserably ( Radio 2, Five Live message boards!!) The current POV message board is now a pale shadow of what it once was as is the 606 forum.
Maybe it's time for the Beeb to cut it's cloth to fit it's purpose and let more specialist people look after the on-line stuff.
And afterall, when has anyone in the BBC ever taken any notice of anything posted on a messageboard. _________________ The wheel keeps on turning...

I( certainly hope they are not getting rid of i player.
I am curreently p0laying last nights' Desmond Carrington 50's icons thing for my mum. She's loving it. There is so little of this sort of programbing on Radio 2. What there is of it goes out at 10 or 11PM.
I don't know about other old folks, but my mum is fast asleep by then.
At the least if they do do away with listen again they'll have to change their bonkers scheduling.
I really hope listen Again is not done away with!
As usual the BBC is too cowardly to say exactly what they will do & word the statement in such a silly, obscurantist way that it is meaningless |

The iPlayer will also be reshaped, bringing together programming and programming information with archive content.
--------
What does the above mean? Does it mean we will still be able to "listen again" as now or not?
Can anyone say what it will mean? -i-player already features that mentioned in the quote
What are they trying to say? |

I wouldn't hold your breath on that one - 'archive content' can be construed to mean a number of things. |

The original purpose of the listen again facility was to make specialist music shows, normally aired at odd times, available to everyone for a period afterward on the listen again player thing (whatever it was called then?). It all went wrong when Mark Radcliffe came to Radio 2 and they immediately put his show on the listen again player. I complained because other normal shows (like Alex Lester) were not on the listen again player. I had correspondence with the Controller at the time. She insisted that Mark Radcliffe was a “specialist music show” and should be on the listen again player. I rather helpfully pointed out that Alex and other shows had specialist music features, which were equally as important to their listeners- she didn’t move. Miraculously, a few weeks later – all output was on the new I-player. Perhaps the new system will go back to the original emphasis on specialist shows. |

Why should it just be specialist shows that are able to be heard again though Rachel? Surely every show has some specialist features, Ken Bruce's Pop Master for instance?
We all pay the same licence fee, so if we only like daytime shedules and happen to miss one surely we should be able to hear it again if we want to? Also internet usage has changed dramatically since Mark Radcliffe arrived at Radio 2 so reducing the number of shows would very much be a backward step.

I'm not suggesting that they should make only specialist shows available, Helen. That is how it all started, is all, perhaps they will go back to that. I don't know, tis just a thought- the all output listen again facility came with iplayer, if iplayer is going, then it follows that the all output listen again will go too and things will return to how they were before iplayer. Seems logical to me but I wouldn't vote for it. |

I think the 'all output' came before it was integrated with iPlayer.
Looking at the new system, and listening to the guy presenting it, makes it seem that they will all have the facility.

Ideally, I agree all progs should be on Listen Again
If there are to be cuts, at least I hope that specialist shows will still be on Listen Again
Then again as has been mentioned, you come to the area of defenition as to which progs qualify as "specialist" |

"Yes, we do plan to build a new product for radio but this isn't to cut corners, or downplay what we do for radio online - as with everything we announced yesterday it's because we want to make the service better, not worse. In the case of radio and music, we think this means giving radio its own home."
http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/bbcinternet/2011/01/our_plans_for_online_radio.html
I would say reading that part of the above blog, all shows would remain on 'Listen Again'.
Also Radio went on the iPlayer in 2008

I agree with all the comments
I just hope the "listen again" new stand alone radio site will be available on Internet radio because we use it frequently for this purpose and it does cost them extra to do this. |
