The reply:
Mark
Thank you for your email, which Lesley Douglas, Controller of Radio 2,
has read.
BBC radio has gradually expanded its traffic news service in recent
years. The rollout to include weekends was part of that and obviously
required additional funding.
If you look across the schedule, several shows including Ken Bruce and
Mark Radcliffe already start on the half hour. But there is no
masterplan to align daytime and evening.
The branding point is an interesting one and I will discuss with
colleagues.

Personally I can't see what difference it makes if a programme starts on the hour or on the half hour Mark...... Radio shows like life don't always fit neatly into hourly compartments.

Next time you write could you ask her to switch on the RDS traffic flag on R2, so my radio will switch when required for the traffic reports.
Thanks |

Hi Mark,
So if we get inflicted with Chris Tarrant later this year, it's all your fault? _________________ Author: “To the Ends of the Earth: A Snapshot of Aviation in North-Eastern Siberia, Summer 1992”

I hate the weekend travel news especially at 6, 7 & 8pm. I now know who to blame. _________________ His name was ernie ........ and he drove the fastest milk cart in the west..... |

Me:
When is FM going to switch off? What's going on? I will no longer be able to watch U.K. TV in a few years, but no worries about that. Can you tell me what is going to replace radio reception? |

Mark's question relates to the fact that some stations (Smooth, for instance) are dropping the "FM" from their names because they're available all over the place: DAB, internet, TV, etc.
I don't think Mark really needed to ask the question as the FM frequency already seems an afterthought on the trailers. How many times do they say "on digital" or "Listen Again on our website"...?
Anyway, a recent report suggested that FM will be switched off in less than 10 years - around 2012, I think. |

Many people are travelling at this time, especially on Sundays, returning from holidays and weekends away, and it can therefore be useful for the many who still do not have satnav and traffic warning systems in their cars. Not sure how comprehensive local radio coverage is at that hour either.
Just so long as they get someone who speaks clearly to do it... _________________ Ron |

Not to mention major (and maybe lesser) sporting events on Saturdays and Sunday shopping, which made that day as busy as any mid week day. I thought for some time that formal travel reports were really needed at the weekends too. Only thing I'd question is why they are cut off at 7:00pm Monday-Fridays but go on after that 'watershed' over the weekends. |

I would doubt it, not at the same time as analogue TV. |

Thanks Ian, got really confused there, I now know I will not be sentenced to listening to Radio Jordan all day (although it's quite good in its own way)
Never heard of Smooth radio, pick up a few Dutch stations, but always get BBC |

I just hope that DAB reception will get much better before they decide to switch off FM broadcasting. During all that bad weather, earlier in the week, I lost all reception of DAB and had to revert to FM. This is not good as it means if I don't feel in a R4 mood, I can't listen to 6 Music, The Jazz or Planet Rock, at 1700 hours!
