Just listening to David Jacobs show for the first time in many moons. Pitty it is tucked away at 11PM Sundays. I think this show would be grand at about 8PM on a saturday evening. Anyway I'm listening to it now on Listen again. I am probably not the target audience for this, but provides an interesting listen none the less
I have complained about Scheduling at radio 2 in the past.
It is maddness putting a show like this, targeted primarilly at the older folk in society, on at 11PM, a time when most old people will be asleep.
What on earth are the radio 2 controllers thinking? Is it their way of sidelining a show before chopping it as they did with the excelent Suzi Quatro??

I do agree. R2 seems to be made up of 'presenter-based' programmes and 'music-based' programmes.

Presenter-based programmes: people switch on to hear the presenter e.g. Evans, Bruce, Wright, Dermot

Music-based programmes: people switch on primarily to listen to the music (and get the professional delivery of presenter) e.g. Paul Jones, Titchy, Russell, Clare, David Jacobs

Some shows may be achieving both: Desmond, Elaine

Seems that the R2 remit is to justifty the licence and reach large audiences during the day hence the presenter-based shows then. The music shows are secondary and are put in random slots. I seem to remember the old R2 did OK with music-based programmes in the afternoon Confused

Note: Ask a lot of R3 (Radio 3) listeners what programme they "enjoy listening to most" and many will say 'Through The Night' which is on 01.00am-07.00am! because it is soooo much just for the music. But I suppose there are not too many other distractions at that time of night Smile

Excellent article by Elisabeth Mahoney in Guardian G2 today(2 March) about David Jacobs.

I know Scott Nelson refrains from posting here but I wish he would read the article which sums up neatly the appeal of his late night show.

I happened to be watching Gold on television a couple of nights ago and they were showing old episodes of 'Some Mothers do Ave Em'

Mr Jacobs featured prominently in the episode I saw playing himself as a BBC person interviewing the hapless Frank about his DIY career
Needless to say the career didn't last long

The thing which struck me was just how young David looked at that time which must have been early 70s

I always used to think of him as quite mature when I first saw him in the 60s on TOTP etc but there's no doubt he's a wonderfully versatile broadcaster who has earned his legendary status through years of quality presentation with his gentlemanly style

I remember hearing that David Jacobs championed the music from Mack and Mabel (making the original Broadway cast album a chart hit) on his show after hearing it accompanying Torville and Dean in one of their routines....I Won't Send Roses,from it, is a song I adore

Away from his radio show/s he'll be remembered by lots of folk for being that impeccably dressed rather posh sounding person who on a Saturday night told us whether songs were Hits or Misses.... Smile

67 years in radio!...Congratulations to you sir....

Thank you Tireecoll and Helen for the delightful Guardian article. I, too, hope Scott reads it.

My first awareness of DJ was the time he played all the characters (apart from the four leads) in Journey Into Space. I then used to listen every Saturday lunchtime to Cyril Stapleton's Show Band Show just to hear DJ's lovely voice as announcer.

There used to be a Radio Show at Olympia in those days and I remember queueing up for ages to get his autograph (still got my book).

A thoroughly lovely chap.

I caught the interview on Steve Wright by chance (well most of it) as I got into the car, and sat in the car to hear the end of it! It went out at around 3.30, well worth a listen as some great anecdotes from David.

Didn't hear him talking to Steve Wright, but I did find the 'David Jacobs: On the Record' documentary this week very interesting.

An excellent way to get to know more about him - especially as I'm not old enough to remember the majority of his career!

I think it's great to be open minded and appreciate others that have gone before, even if you are not necessarily a fan or the music is aimed at you in particular(i'm talking in general terms)

I think on the whole we are all quite open to a lot of different styles of broadcasting and music here and like to experience a bit of everything...In general both here and Digital Spy I have only really seen positive comments about David, That says a lot.
