Are you sure that Evans didn't just talk "at him" rather than "interview" him?

No thanks! I'll be something - anything - less painful than listening to Evans.

You really do love looking for any negative reference to Evans, don't you! Isn't it interesting that you choose (yet again) to ignore the context in which my comment is made.

I thought you weren't going to post here any more?

I understand that the the whole thing is being recorded beforehand, probably something to do with GM's last effing outburst a few years back.

I care nothing for GM anymore, he's just a sad excuse for a former popstar who will be more remebered for his sordid personal life and appalling driving record than any of the shyte music that he made anyway...

'Shyte music' is a bit of a sweeping statement. I may hesitate to mention it, but nevertheless, it's still true that in their heyday both Gary Glitter & Jonathan King (in both his own name & under various aliases) also had sizeable hits before their sordid personal lives completely knackered things for them. And I hasten to add that I in no way wish to excuse anything they may have done, but both did have very big (No 1) hits in their day.

I hated all the Wham! crap (even though it was superior pop music in its time), but I think George Michael's own album "Faith" was fabulous - superbly well written songs, excellent production and great musicianship.

That said, he's now washed up and no amount of help from his chum Evans will make any difference.

I'm not up with celebrity gossip - are Evans and Michael really chums?

It smacks more to me of "I'm a big noise celeb who normally costs a lot of money but I'm available for interview free of charge (to try and wheedle my way back into public affection by a) prostrating myself and b) promoting my latest product which is for Comic Relief - but not officially).

It is/was a good interview, much better than I expected. I’ve been looking forward to it since last week: it was a pity that R2 news spoiled it by telling us on Saturday what George had said, the news reports lowered my expectations almost to the point where I wasn't going to listen to it. It’s always a mistake to quote people because you can never convey the feeling, the inflection, the tone or the ambiance of the interview. The news people wrecked the anticipation of this brilliant interview.

Well done Captain Chris- A fab piece of work but note for the future- you have to keep a lid on things until the perfect moment. Shoot the news people, not literally of course – shoot them a hard stare- that’ll do it.

Surely it makes sense for the BBC's Press Office to put out a release to the press in order to drum up interest. Column inches and broadcast minutes help to drum up interest which in turns leads to (they hope) an increased audience.

It didn't work for me, of course (because Captain Ego is involved) but that's how PR works in general.

I disagree; there was no need to drum up any interest. How many of the half dozen Saturday lunchtime listeners whom don’t usually listen to Captain Chris would think, oh George Michael interview on Monday, must remember to tune in for that and then actually remember to do it? The 8-9 million Captain Chris listeners already knew about it. In any case the way they presented the interview in the news report was all too page seven of The Sun type reporting and more off-putting than it was attractive advertising.

It was promoted much more widely than to "a half dozen Saturday lunchtime visitors" Rachel; the BBC's own website featured it, and the feed was scraped by lots of news and showbiz portals like Yahoo Entertainment, etc., so the BBC's press office had obviously put a lot of effort into achieving the "viral marketing" effect.

Well it stinks! So there! I HATE things being reported in the news before they happen. That isn't news, it's a prediction. It's all gone wrong, the weather people tell us what weather we've had today- like we didn't notice and the news people tell what David Cameron will say later today. Russell Grant is your man for that nonesense not newscasters.

I agree about our current irritating weather forecasts

By the end of the day I already know what the weather was like that day because I was there

What I want to know is what will the weather be like the following day or even better for the rest of the week

Also I don't really want to know what weather they are currently having in America or Australia etc - just confine it to Britain or at least Western Europe

In my experience the best weather forecast is the five day one given by the BBC on Sundays in Countryfile and that's the only one I like to make a point of watching

But it's not fair to draw an analogy with weather forecasts; the BBC obviously felt it necessary to promote the interview (nothing unusual or unreasonable about that) and it did so by releasing extracts of the interview to the full run of media outlets in a manner known to media-people as a "teaser". I can't see what the problem is. In this highly-competitive media age it's pretty important for all broadcasters to steal a march on the competition by promoting it's own product (and doesn't the Beeb do it a lot for Captain Ego - much to the annoyance of myself and many others).

Whilst I had no intention whatever of listening to the "Ego at Breakfast" show, I was certainly aware that the George Michael "exclusive" was in the bag and scheduled for transmission - so somebody had done their job properly in promoting it.

A bad song from George Michael? Shocked

He's not done anything decent since, er, "The Edge of Heaven" in 1986. Was Ridgeley the talented one all along?

On the subject of the TV weather forecasts, I wish the BBC would scrap that berluddy moving map. I find it very annoying! Evil or Very Mad

Really? So "Cowboys and Angels" (from the 1990 album "Listen Without Prejudice") can't be described as "decent"? I have to disagree.

Yep, they can promote whatever they like, I don’t care, but to release quoted extracts from an interview, read without warmth or passion in a news report, is not promotion, it’s high jacking- like I said, it very nearly worked the other way around for me. Why would I want to hear something I've heard before? My time is precious, we don't have long left.

I’ve got a really great surprise for you that you can’t have until next Monday but on the Saturday before I’m going to get Radio 2 News to spoil it for you by telling you exactly what it is.

How can it be hi-jacking when the production department and PR would have colluded to release such "teasers"? This happens all the time, and if I were the programme's producer I'd be very pleased that it was getting such advance promotion.

Hardly a great surprise was it? It was only an interview with a washed-up pop idol desperate for publicity and getting it on the "Captain Ego Breakfast Show"! He was getting the hype both he and his management company desired.

Cool

It was a surprise to me! Evil or Very Mad They could promote an interview, all day, without telling us what is in it but that wouldn’t be “NEWS” would it. That’s my point it wasn’t news, it shouldn’t have been in the news.
Anyway you’re probably right and that annoys me too, so I’m off to do some gardening.

And he's called Captain Chris, not Captain Ego - that's Moylesy's handle. So there!

No, it was rubbish - and he's repeated it ad nauseum ever since.

He really is a very tedious man and I have no idea why the media in general (and Radio 2 in particular) continue to give him an outlet.

Totally agree, what a pile of cack! Not my favourite song anyway, but GM has managed to turn what was (IMO) a lacklustre song into an unlistenable one.

There probably is an element of truth to the Andrew Ridgely comment, he was certainly the energy behind Wham.

He was the motivator, though. As we've since discovered, when left to his own devices George Michael just can't be arsed.

He wasn't that motivated to do much with his own career, was he? And what he might have done wasn't nearly as impressive as the stuff George Michael did in the years after Wham (eg: Listen Without Prejudice, Faith, etc).

Perhaps he couldn't be arsed, either.
