It's the fabric the plastic chairs are covered in. |

For a fire you need three things: oxygen, fuel and a spark/flame/ignition source.
OK the cathedral is full of air, so there's oxygen. The chairs have a combustible fabric on 'em, that's the fuel.
So what's gonna actually set fire to the place?
It's a bit odd to say that chairs "had been responsible for blazes causing damage in other cathedrals"
Yeah right, spontaneously combustible chairs.....
So what's gonna actually set fire to the place?
Ah, candles. They have candles in English churches, and dodgy electrics maybe. Oh and careless people who create the hazardous situation that starts fires
Well, I expect the insurance company have conducted an audit and said that IF there was a fire the chair fabric would spread the fire quickly, maybe too quickly for anyone to put it out in good time. _________________ -

Strong sunlight from glass could possibly cause a fire John.
Many years ago now, in the porch of our old house we put some man made carpet over some tiles which melted from sun coming through the tulip glass in the lower panes of glass in the porch. It went all the way through to the backing which was of course a different colour to the carpet fibres. I've heard it could have caused a fire.

I doubt it would happen in a cathedral though Helen
The size of the windows would make it unlikely and such places are generally quite dark and dinghy
I can quite believe it could happen in a house _________________ Are you ready for a Ruddles? |

When we lived in Spain I left my mobile phone on the table in front of the window. In that case it wasn't the glass in the window that melted the phone, it was the fact that there was a glass vase on the table between the phone and the window.
The phone still worked, but it wasn't very comfortable to use with all the molten hardened plastic. _________________ Minx
