There's a laudatory obituary for the R & M show in The Independent spin-off "i" today written by Simon O'Hagan. He is not thrilled by the replacement Jo Wiley. |

My friend Rob is one of the sub-editors on that very publication! It's very good. I'll catch up on the piece shortly. |

Praise for Lesley Douglas as well. Who'd have thought it? _________________ Ron |

Lesley Douglas is spoken very highly of in Phill Jupitus's 'Good Morning Nantwich', though he admits to burning his bridges in her presence. _________________ We are loonies and we are proud!

Lesley Douglas was largely responsible for dragging Radio 2 down and infecting it with celebs (same goes 6Music).
The only good thing that Douglas ever did for Radio 2 was to bring in Mark Radcliffe.
Shennan is simply carrying on where Douglas left off with Radio 2, but he does seem to be trying to reinvigorate 6Music (ie by moving anything decent on Radio 2 over to 6Music).
Even so, R&M should have stayed on Radio 2, evenings, at least four nights a week.
I do hope that R&M's format stays largely unchanged on 6Music and that it's not watered down at the behest of Shennan. I also hope that R&M have the staying power to manage 15 hours of broadcasting per week, instead of the current 6. |

That's the way I see it too Barty. IMO, it was Jim Moir who dragged Radio 2 back from the abyss. That was certainly my 'golden era' of R2, when there was far more on there that I'd listen to than not. _________________ Lord Evan Elpuss, Your ideal job is a Lumberjack. |

Jo wanted to leave Radio 1 and Radio 2 focus a lot on live and new music. Everyone always thinks it's down the controller who's making these moves, but has anyone asked themselves whether it's the presenters themselves approaching them with there own future & ideas? |

Another day of reckoning for R2, and not a positive one either.
Whether or not it's right for the show to be on 6 Music is, at least to me irrelevant, because I'll be wherever Mark and Stuart are broadcasting - that is now on digital. The DAB debate is something I understand, but doesn't affect me, thankfully. I have DAB.
However, where it absolutely relevant is just where this leaves R2. Not looking good, is it? Jo Whiley? Sorry, another poor signing to add to the growing list of stale shows that now live in harmony with the crass rubbish at CelebFM, erm, I mean R2.
R2 is hardly on in this house any more, and with Radcliffe and Maconie now removed from a strong slot, well, it will be few and far between for me in terms of my visits to 88-91 FM.
Well done Bob Shennan for giving DAB listeners on 6 Music an alternative to Steve Wright, but I fear it will be the final nail in the R2 coffin for many listeners. I hope the move to '6' works for Mark and Stuart - I'll be there from the 4th April.
The best show on conventional radio lost.
Welcome to D.I.Y. radio - It stands for 'Destroy It Yourself'.....Shennan. |

If Chris Moyles came to Bob Shennan and said he wanted to focus on live music, can he have a slot please? Should he be given one just like that? No.
Every presenter is going to want the best slot and the most freedom, but it's up to the controller to think what's best for the station not a freelancer's way of life. |

"CelebFM" - I like it. I wish I didn't, but I do.
I've just mentally clocked up the hours I now actually listen to R2 set against what I did in 2001.
2001: Monday to Friday, 7.30 to 9.30 am at least, 5pm to 8pm at least most nights (including the specialist programming) and sometimes til 9pm. Saturdays: 1pm-midnight or 1am if I was in. Sundays didn't bother really. Say about 50 hours or more a week.
2010: Monday to Friday, occasionally listen to an hour or less of KB at work each day on the MP3/radio, but soon turn to the iPod. Occasionally listen to R&M (well, did) if I remember to switch over from R4 or am not listening again to Bob Harris's Saturday and Sunday programmes via the iPlayer. Saturdays: occasionally remember to tune into PG but usually forget since I don't have the radio on during the afternoon anymore. Sundays: 3pm-6pm if I'm in. Say about 12 hours or less, which includes both Bob Harris late night shows.
And I'm supposedly in the demographic for CelebFM, sorry, R2. _________________ Author: “To the Ends of the Earth: A Snapshot of Aviation in North-Eastern Siberia, Summer 1992”

I like this.
2001: 40 hours.
2011: 2 hours if you're lucky.
Thanks, Bob.
In case you're wondering what I spend the other 38 hours doing (I should point out that this is and never was all attentive listening) but I imagine now it's mostly 6Music, my music, a bit of 5Live, a touch of Radio 4 and, well, silence. |

An open comment to Bob Shennan:
Dear Lord Bobstein of Shennangladbach,
May I be the first to congratulate you on giving the nation (that's the United Kingdom Of Freedom Fries to you Sir Bobbleski), Europe, the World, the Universe as we know it, Jim, and the small industrious village of Tuckton in Dorset the power to combat the evil empire of Wrightsville in the afternoons by 'moving' Sir Mark and Sir Stuart (and their Roadie, Sir Noddlemeister) to 6 Music. A stroke of genius my friend - although, after the signing of Alan Carr, it wasn't hard to finally get something right, now was it?
To some, it's a crime against broadcasting to move the boys to digital radio, away from the platform of celestial airwave excellence that is CelebFM, erm, I mean Radio 2. But, after some careful consideration, and after a cheese sandwich and 23 minutes spent sucking the juice out of a chili infused pickled onion without pausing to lick my lips, I must admit to salivating at the thought of Radcliffe and Maconie kicking the stale butt of 'The Big Show' every weekday afternoon from April 4th on '6' (as the trendy folks in the Telegraph call it).
I may celebrate in a bit with a Minestrone Cup-A-Soup (with croutons) while I watch 'How to dismantle an atom bomb' in my underpants by way of a celebration, if my Mum lets me stay up late. Second thoughts, isn't a 14 year old copy of 'The best of Jo Brand' doing the rounds on the internet? Aaaaaagh, the heady days of comedic astuteness, all wrapped up in size 28 pants (or knickers as I believe they are still known in the fashion capital of the world - Northallerton, Yorkshiretownville) but, I digress......
More power (of the digital variety) to you Lord Bobbage - it's a stroke of utter brilliance on your part, you, and the other members of the committee, the sub-committee and the senior members of the uber-committee, and the small lad who did most of the singing for Musical Youth on their 1982 hit 'Pass the Dutchie ('pon the left hand of centre side).
May I finish by stating (or maybe simply remarking) that no sound technicians, university educated producers driving Ford Capri type vehicles, or Gary Bones-infused individuals were injured in the preparation of this post - honest 'guvnor.
Carry on.........
Yours, the lonely man still waiting for the #42 to Camden.
(No vinegar on my chips, please)
I thank you (no really). |

I was nearly rolling on the floor laughing by the time I got to the end of that totally brilliant piece of writing! That sums things up nicely. _________________ Pirate Johnnie Walker played my request on 11 April 2009 |
