The cover that's irritating me most at the moment is Ellie Goulding's cover of EJ's 'Your Song'. It's not that I thought EJ did it so particularly well, just that I get really irritated by 'cutesy' versions of good oldies. This song deserved better treatment if it had to get a re-run. _________________ Minx

I agree Minx
Its all down to that damn advert and I particularly dislike cover versions of songs which come from adverts rather than being successful on their own merits
There are very few cover versions better than the original but I won't go there now as I posted my selections earlier on this thread _________________ Are you ready for a Ruddles? |

I agree too. I have to turn it off whenever it comes on - which seems to be whenever I'm listening to Radio 2. |

I agree. This woman's version of the lovely Your Song is particularly charmless, soulless and lifeless. And pointless (except for her and Reggie's bank balance).
Billy Paul did a great version of the song as the B-side of Me And Mrs Jones in 1972/73. It was a brilliant funk/soul/jazz version and a perfect example of a good cover. |

It seems designed to play in coffee shops (Ellie Goulding's 'Your Song').
By the way, the Genesis fans' boards had a link to a piss-take of Coldplay's 'The Scientist' on YouTube(cruel but deserved) and to Aimee Mann's cover of same! _________________ We are loonies and we are proud!

Love that song,Minx... and love this version of it from Moulin Rouge by Ewan McGregor.

Sheryl Crow had a 'cutesey' version of Here Comes The Sun that was on the end credits of The Bee Movie (I was waiting for WALL-E to come on). Not a patch on the Steve Harley & Cockney Rebel version!
This surely must have been left over from the I Am Sam soundtrack, where Crow's attempt at Mother Nature's Son makes her sound like she's full of cold. Harry Nilsson made a much better version of this Beatles song on the 'Harry' album. _________________ We are loonies and we are proud!

Jarvis Cocker played Soft Cell's version of Hey Joe on his show yesterday, which had me thinking of the post saying the Hendrix version wasn't gay enough for the Ken Bruce show! _________________ We are loonies and we are proud!

Have to say that George Michaels version of "True Faith" sounded absolutely AWFUL when I heard it today.
I'm not a fan of New Order, so I don't have a problem with him covering the song.
Maybe a bit unfair to judge on one play, but I can't see it getting any better!!! |

George Michaels doing New Order? All we need now is someone to discover the long-lost "Perry Como sings the best of Motorhead" sessions and everything will be right in the world! _________________ Author: “To the Ends of the Earth: A Snapshot of Aviation in North-Eastern Siberia, Summer 1992”

Now that is something I would like to hear Cherskiy.
Remember Paul Anka with his "Rock Swings" album, so it could be done? |

Gazmando, I just caught George Michael's version of True Faith on Comic Relief night. Was he having a laugh?
The autotune on his voice is more suited to the cast of Glee. They should have made Kate Bush's reworking of Deeper Understanding a single for Comic Relief. _________________ We are loonies and we are proud!

The Susan Boyle/Geraldine duet on I Know Him So Well wasn't even funny. Peter Kay as Geraldine always sounded to me like Martin Orford (formerly of IQ) and I wouldn't have minded a reworking of 'A Time & A Season' from The Old Road album as a potential Comic Relief song! _________________ We are loonies and we are proud!

Yes Graham, I heard that GM was covering True Faith,
now my opinion of GM is that he's ok seems to be an ok bloke his music is ok mostly and Wham! to be fair are a bit of fun I couldn't listen to them every day but still fun. Just needs to stay away from his car a bit more often.
However I am a New Order fan so I was apprehensive about the cover but thought it would be kind of ok.
Wrong Bloody awful, yes I know it's for charity so I hope it makes lots of money but......
GM has a good voice so why has he joined the pitch shift club of singers who can't hold a tune. _________________ You will hear gospel and rhythm and blues and jazz, all those are just labels, we know that music is music. |

Becky, your Smiths cover also reminds me about Love Spit Love's cover of How Soon Is Now, as heard on the opening titles to Charmed! _________________ We are loonies and we are proud!

Gazmando, I do like Jellyfish!
However, I don't like Sade covering Thin Lizzy's 'Still In Love With You'. How convenient that Gary Moore is dead so she can reduce a touching song to mush.
I wonder if she'll do X-Ray Spex's 'Identity' next? _________________ We are loonies and we are proud!

Avid: I agree. Sade's cover of Still In Love With You is utterly charmless, soulless and pointless. Thin Lizzy's original is sublime, with a great guitar solo.
Pity because I liked her work in the 80s. |

ITV3 must employ friends of Fyfe Dangerfield (if not Billy Joel fans)on Saturday night as every ad break had the John Lewis ad with 'She's Always A Woman To Me' on!
This was closely followed by the Evergreen ad with new words to 'Daydream Believer'! _________________ We are loonies and we are proud!
