For those of you who don’t listen to the Best Time of The Day Show with Alex, this news will maybe come as a shock – so if you’re not already sitting down, then please; do take a seat, because it is with mounting sorrow and a heavy heart that I pass on the sad news, that the one off 4:15 Canteen will close its famous and familiar flappy-doors for the very last time tomorrow morning. It will be difficult for us to cope with this loss, there will be tough times ahead but we have to be brave: you must remember that greater love has no DJ than he who runs an early morning roadside radio café. When great deeds of broadcasting are remembered, one radio feature will stand for all time above all others- the one off 4:15 Canteen. The memory of this place, with its roadkill burgers, chunky chips and sticky floor, will forever be engraved on our saddened hearts: the abandoned, derelict site of the one off 4:15 Canteen at the side of that great road we call Broadcasting, will always be a hallowed place, for it is one of Radio’s most noble and loved features. Thank you. |

I heard that, in a brief period of wakefulness at the start of the show. The lease is running out (and the landlord, probably Tesco, will want the statutory triple rate to renew - that's how Robin Hood had to close down his Nottingham base).
I think its time had come anyway - it was funny for a while but I got the feeling that the truckers were trying just a little too hard with the drag/commando/furry/kinky routine of attire.
No-one else, nowhere else... can you imagine the weekend chap doing that? _________________ Ron |

It's the one feature on Alex's show that I've not had a go at at some point over the years, Ron. I’m just not weird enough. The one off 4:15 Canteen will soon join Alex's broadcasting cupboard under the stairs, full of old features...
Boggler ( I really liked Boggler- are you ready to Boggle?)
Band On the Run ( Won that once - entered a zillion times)
The Odd Couple ( never quite understood that one)
Alex's Agenda
The Random Quotation Generator (Totally embarrassed myself on that.)
and many more I've forgotten about
Oh...and the one off competitions ... THE T Shirt... I still have it!
I wonder what the new feature will be? Will there be a new feature? Maybe there'll be a gap? and today is the first day of our new feature: the gap.....................nah that'll never work. Oh hang on... Fill the gap,... yes! That's better.... but what with? Maybe there'll be more music? Maybe just maybe there'll be something else.... |

The Gap could be fertile territory
Mind The Gap...
Bridge That Gap...
The things you lose in the gap between/behind/under
The things you find years later in the gap.....
The Gap Band, and that stoopid floor-polishing "dance"
Has anyone ever purchased anything from The Gap? _________________ Ron |

Do you actually get up specially to listen to Alex live Rachel, or do you listen on the I Player?
I know you're a keen fan but with you saying that you had taken part in one of his old features a while ago I'm assuming that you must have been listening live at that time but I was just curious as to whether you always did or whether that was a one off thing
I think Alex is a great broadcaster but I just never seem to get to hear him these days as he rarely now covers daytime shows and I never seem to have the time to catch up on I Player _________________ Are you ready for a Ruddles? |

It depends on what my hubby is up to: if he’s working away, I get up for the last hour but if hubby is at home and working locally, I listen on the I-player usually while KB is on- with a break for popmaster. I used to get up to listen live and interact with the show most days (before getting married) but getting up at 3am then doing a 9 hour day in the office kind of takes it out of you. I aged 30 years in 6-months. The phone-in competitions were pre-recorded during the day, the other competitions were all e-mail based, so could be entered at any time.
Listening to Alex now on radio London. Cool beans! |

Oh excellent Rachel
If Alex is covering at breakfast time I can listen - and I will
Even better I notice that his shows ends at 9am so I won't miss the Golden Hour on Smooth and in any case I notice that Radio London's output deteriorates seriously after 9am
Also thanks Fred for posting the link _________________ Are you ready for a Ruddles? |

Well the new feature kicked-in at 4:15. It must be one of those temporary rental agreements in a vacant commercial premises when some real fly-by-night rogue trader with a Liverpudlian or Cockney accent sets up shop for a few weeks selling stuff you don’t want or need but because it’s so cheap you buy it anyway.
The 4:15 Kate and Wills Tat Shop.- Just a gap filler I hope. Apart from the name and the other bits that are different, it sounds EXACTLY THE SAME as the 4:15 one off canteen! Obviously no one came up with a new idea over the weekend… it gets to 4:14 … ummmm what’s next ? The new feature. What new feature? The new 4:15 feature, the one you were going to come up with over the weekend. The Weekend! That was Beer and Pies. Quick! Think of something- you have 24 seconds to save the show. Don’t panic- think tea towels and hand me those e-mails from last week. You can never go wrog with tea towels. |

I have it on good authority that the 4:15 pop up shop that is the Kate and Wills Tat Machine may not even make it to the end of this week. Trading Standards have had a truckload of complaints about dodgy gear. |
