I'm not being nasty or anything, but presenters like Richard Allinson, Alex Lester and Janice Long seem to be not used to cover other shows at the station no more. Is this because they are don't fit into the age demographic what Radio 2 listeners want?
Bob Shennan is able to find a slot for Jo Whiley ( I an't putting her down or anything ) - Instead he found a slot for Richard Allinson in the middle of the night at the weekends. Why couldn't Richard, Alex or Janice given the Evening Session slot? It does seem it's ok for some, but not for others. Personally Smooth Radio should have offered those 3 shows, and stick two fingers up at Radio 2. I do think Ken Bruce and Steve Wright need to worry over the next 5 years, as the station seems to changing very quickly..
Maybe weekend and overnight slots is the new graveyard for those experienced proffessional DJ's at the station, whilst certain celebrities are given better shows to cover etc!! |

"Age demographic what Radio 2 listeners want?" Can you translate please, Mark?
As it happens , they appear to fit in perfectly within Radio 2's target audience as defined by the BBC. The fact that they're under-used is down to a clueless Controller, I would have thought. |

They are all perfectly adequate presenters who should be on Radio 2 more often (or in better slots). But as long as people (including yourself) stick up for the station hiring hasbeens like Jo Whiley or celebs like Alan Carr, these talented radio presenters aren't going to get a look-in. |

Hang on a second. You can't just blame the situation on a few listeners who enjoy certain shows. The Alan Carr show is distance away from Jo Whiley show, with totally different concept. Jo is a talented knowledgeable music broadcaster, and Alan Carr, Like Graham Norton - is at the station to entertain not play records.. ( Although I'm sure he likes music )!!.. Chris Evans has also in recent months admitted he knows nothing about music... At least he's honest about that, but that dosn't reflect on 8 million who tune in week after week....
I admiit there are lots of guys who work in BBC Local and Commercial sector who could have bought there music knowledge to Radio 2, but thats not what Radio 2 wants!! |

I don't understand what you're saying Mark. In your first post of the thread you started you say that some DJs are being wasted and ought to get more slots, but just 3 posts later you're saying those slots should be filled with people who "a few listeners" enjoy as people who know about music is "not what Radio 2 wants"
So, never mind Radio 2, what do you want? |

Those I mentioned like Alan Carr are given the slots for a reason, but the 3 I mentioned in the opening thread should have been given more daytime airtime. Yes maybe the station needs to drag the celebs into the midnight hours, but they wouldn't get them too do that. |

Define a Radio 2 listener, because he/she certainly ain't the same beast that they were 5-6 years ago.
Today's R2 listener is much more like an X Factor viewer, unable draw the line between real music and manufactured music, but still like to think of themselves as music fans. |

I get the impression that the "average Radio 2 listener" (whatever that is) is less able to distinguish between what I would call a "proper presenter" and a kids' entertainer!
The regular Breakfast Show presenter is one such example, with Alan Carr being another. |

While I don’t agree with it, having entertaining people on at peak times is a good business model I guess- the listener figures seem to bear that out- sort of. With the iplayer, all of us music nerds can (and do) listen to the proper DJs at any time we like and again that makes sense-sort of, cos proper DJs and proper music is not something you should do while getting the kids breakfast or popping out on the school run– DJs like Alex are too good to waste on background fodder at peak times and busy times of the day. You need quality time with Alex, not just a quick snatch over the breakfast table in the kitchen. |

Rachel hits the nail on the head....
Daytime R2 largely serves as background music for me nowadays - I start paying more attention to the specialist shows that I listen via iPlayer. Others that offer so-called "entertainment value" (Alan Carr, Patrick Kielty, Graham Norton) are dispatched by copious use of the "off button". _________________ Author: “To the Ends of the Earth: A Snapshot of Aviation in North-Eastern Siberia, Summer 1992”

I don't entirely agree with that. You can have a "good DJ" working breakfast slots or whatever who is capable of knocking out some thumping good music yet gabbles less. I just don't understand the need for endless cackle and silliness in radio station breakfast shows. Nor do I need some airhead encouraging me to wake up and get moving in style each morning - in fact it drives me bonkers (a perfect example of this being Evans' first few minutes from 6.30am, but the standard "Him and the Bimbo Sidekick" format on every formatted Heart outlet and others is equally nauseating.
To me that's just bad radio - and very condescending with it. Still, if people want it - let 'em eat cake. |

I happen to think that the 3 named in the OP along with Johnnie Walker are the only REAL talent the station has outside the truly "specialist" shows.
That none of them has been given a prime slot while the likes of Evans and Wright are allowed to pander their dated twaddle is nothing short of a disgrace.
Evans' shouty in your face style has never been right for Radio Two and Wright's tired old show has been dragged round the block so many times it's rut is as deep as a canyon.
Even the perfectly affable Ken Bruce is a good way past his sell by date.
And to be honest, I think that Jeremy Vine could/should be replaced by Simon Mayo - who proved in his marvelous Five Live show that he's more than at home dealing with politics and current affairs as well as music.
I too now find Radio Two more a background noise rather than the good listen and THAT, I think, is a great shame. _________________ The wheel keeps on turning...

A female broadcaster has covered most shows at the station now, except two shows which Bob Shennan has left them off. Breakfast & Steve Wright Show...He wouldn't cover 6 day times shows with females in one hit?...... |

I've heard it's not really Shennon who's responsible for all these duff stand-ins, but the station's "Talent Manager" who's got quite cosy with some of them. Dunno if that person was there during Lesley Douglas's time too. |

Sorry Mark you're wrong
Lisa Tarbuck has covered for Steve Wright along with Mark Radcliffe several times and I believe she covered on her own around Christmas time last year
No female presenter to my knowledge has covered the breakfast show but if it was down to me we'd have a permanent female presenter in the shape of Lynn Parsons _________________ Are you ready for a Ruddles? |

Yes Liza has covered for Wrighty on her own, but it was the Bank Holiday schedule. I meant the normal schedule. |

I don't think it was a Bank Holiday Schedule Mark
When Liza covered Steve's show with Mark it was in the summer when Steve was on holiday and when she covered on her own it was in the intervening period between Christmas and New Year which is not a Bank Holiday
Also Mark Radcliffe has covered Steve's show with a different female presenter whose name I forget not very long ago _________________ Are you ready for a Ruddles? |

No one has mentioned in this thread the likes of Dave Pearce, Huey Morgan and Trevor Nelson as potential cover presenters.
Would like to see these guys given an opportunity during daylight hrs-covering for the likes of Evans, Bruce and Wright. |

I think Bob will continue to rotate the cover presenters into the future.
I can see the likes of Jo Wiley and Lynn Parsons (and even Paul O'Grady) being added to the pool of cover jocks.
Indeed I think Paul O'Grady would make an ideal cover or permanent replacement for Alan Carr on a Saturday night. |

Lynn Parsons is in a different league compared to most of the dodgy 6 Music presenters you mentioned in your previous post Mark
As for Bob Shennan he's an idiot so anything could happen and probably will _________________ Are you ready for a Ruddles? |

That's probably a slightly unfair comment. Ken is an extremely talented and knowledgeable presenter. It's Gary Bones that is dragging this show down with his ludicrous repetitve Guilty Pleasures. |

I agree, Ken is still one of the best, if not the best , on R2 daytime and he is still good and witty but the music has dragged his show down. |

I agree Mark - I think Lynn is by far the best female presenter on UK radio today
Bob Shennan should offer her a slot as the first female daytime presenter on Radio 2 preferably in place of Chris Evans but as he's a complete idiot I just can't see it happening _________________ Are you ready for a Ruddles? |

All very well, but there is no comparison. Paul O'Grady is gay and funny, Alan Carr thinks that being gay is funny - talentless dross. _________________ Standing on Ray Moore's shoulders |

To be fair, Carr recently said the same thing about TV commissioners - that they keep giving him desperate gay-themed shows because they think that's automatically funny. I think he's a decent stand-up but his Radio 2 is terrible, and something you can find on any commercial station up and down the land at that time. |
