I was waiting for it to take off... and then it ended. Hm.
And how obvious is it they asked Tom Jones first? |

"The more you listen to it, the stronger it gets," said Humperdinck. "It's not a one-time listen."
Errr, it is for me..
I'll be amazed if this gets anywhere the top, it's so boring. When will we learn, a winning song needs to be quirky, punchy, lively and most of all not British... _________________ Johnnie Walker read out my message on Pirate Radio! 13/8/07

I agree Santa but when we chose the quasi rap song by Daz Sampson a few years ago that was somewhat quirky but still bit the dust
The whole thing is political these days and even if Lady Gaga was singing the British entry we'd still finish almost last _________________ Are you ready for a Ruddles? |

I think as far as our Eurovision entries go this is a decent effort ..I like the simplicity of it and Eng's voice is sounding good on it. |

I thought he sounded great, but not sure the song can do it. Maybe they could 'tweek' it a bit!

I like it. He's got to sing first, though, according to Ken Bruce, so let's get our excuses in early. _________________ life is what happens to you while you're busy making other plans |

We won't win it and that not because of the song. It's political. |

I don't think it is political. Since the beginning of the contest different blocs have voted for each other (eg Scandinavia, Cyprus/Greece) but we've managed to win it if we've had a decent song. Recently when we had a good singer and songwriter (Jade/Lloyd-Webber) we did quite well. I got fed up with Terry Wogan moaning about other countries voting for each other when we seemed to be entering rubbish songs entered by singers who couldn't sing in tune - why would other countries vote for that. I think we might do quite well this year, although the song probably isn't strong enough to win. |

I'm shocked! Someone who actually recognises that the UK keeps sending p*** poor entries and that their failure to win isn't down to this so-called "political voting"!
And have to agree with you on Wogan as well! Graham Norton is a much better choice as commentator.... |

I've just heard the song again on Ken's show just now and my thoughts were that we have a world class legendary performer singing what is a very, very mediocre song
Going first in the running order isn't going to help our chances either but if the odds of 14/1 mentioned by Ken are correct I might just risk a fiver to make Eurovision night a bit more interesting
Mind you I would recommend going for a 'best odds guaranteed' arrangement as I reckon those odds are not all that generous considering how bad the song is and I'm sure the odds will lengthen considerably once people watch the Euro semi final heats a few days before the main contest and realise the truth about just how poor the British entry probably is compared to others _________________ Are you ready for a Ruddles? |

Terrible... mundane, heard it 100 time's before rubbish..... and a 90s keyboard, drum mix too.
I'd suggest the whole concept of a song for Europe is outdated... _________________ Johnnie Walker read out my message on Pirate Radio! 13/8/07

At least we didn't end up bottom of the heap..... (time to give up on Eurovision perhaps)
I watched the football (and recorded the Eurovision) then just whizzed through the songs and from what bit I heard of each song this caught my ear.....

Didn't know until this morning that Jamie Cullum co-wrote it. |

I would rather see the money that the BBC spends on Eurovision used to save some of the decent shows on BBC local radio. (Such as the Roger "Twiggy" Day Show) _________________ Pirate Johnnie Walker played my request on 11 April 2009 |

Me too Angela!
If there isn't one already, there should be a petition for us to pull out of the Eurovision Song contest. I'm sure it would receive the amount of signatures required for it to be brought up in Parliament!

It bugs me that the BBC is still required to make a contribution to the total Song Contest budget equivalent to 1/6th - which must surely be one helluva lot of money going by the complexity of the operation. I really think the BBC's top brass are out of touch on this, especially at a time when resources are being withdrawn from regional and local broadcasting (our local MK breakfast opt-out from 3CR radio is going sometime soon). It's pathetic that local radio and TV broadcasting is so sparse here in the UK.
Whilst the membership of the EBU is obviously vital, I can't see why the Beeb just can't retire gracefully from the Song Contest and leave to those nations that get their kicks from voting for their best buddies (Greece and Cyprus, for example). Alternatively, why not eliminate the songs altogether and have a "whose best friend is your country's this year" contest instead? |

Eurovision was by far the top-rated show on TV yesterday, and one of the highest of the week. Probably the highest-rated non-soap television programme of the last 7 days.
That's why the BBC don't pull out (and, for several hours of multi-platform broadcasting, it's pretty good value for money). |

As a major member of the EBU, the BBC can easily take the output feeds (and share in the considerable international syndication rights) without our having to suffer the embarrassment of failed song entries year after year. |

Thank goodness for the Norwegians! They let us beat them at football last night and also have the decency to end up below us in Eurovision!
Englebert's song was perfectly pleasant but surely is not the sort of song that's going to win the contest these days. 40/50 years ago it might have won, but since then the UK has been caught up and overtaken by the rest of Europe in all aspects of life, especially music (and football). |

Yeah, but if the UK weren't in it the show wouldn't get the reach it does. |

Football maybe (I don't care much about football) but music? Definitely not. There's a massive amount of good music being originated in the UK - not that you'd know it from the bulk of Radio 2's dire output. |

Colin, you're right of course in that there's always good new music around in the UK, but when it comes to the dreadful Eurovision Song Contest we really do lag behind everybody else, including former Soviet states. We're still stuck in a world of Dana and All Kinds Of Everything. |

That's why I think we should drop out. I often think that the UK is saddled with appalling entries as a means of saving the BBC the cost of hosting the event the following year! |

What a choice that was for main channel Saturday evening viewing.
Eurovision Song Contest or England v Norway at football.
The masochist and optimist societies of Great Britain must have been beside themselves.
I feel sorry for the Norwegians. _________________ Ron |

It tickles me when things are not to the taste of someone they feel the need to label (albeit lightheartedly)? people whose tastes they are to....a bit like when a certain Mr E was disliked others championed him....we all have different likes and dislikes ..simple as....

Sorry Becky, it was indeed lighthearted. I had earlier posted, then deleted, a serious, factual note about the cost and value-for-money of the show, compared to normal Saturday evening output, and, because we are obliged by our membership of the EBU to carry and pay for it, the marginal benefit to be had in abstaining. _________________ Ron |
