| I thought it odd that Tony Blackburn was presenting a 1970s Top 20 "special" today when it had been billed as featuring music from 1966 and 1976. A last-minute standby substitution? |

Yes, I too was disappointed as I was looking forward to 1966, but not 1976, the worst year in music!
I hope this is just a one off, and not a further attempt by the idiots in charge to dumb down Radio 2. The music I did hear was utter 70s tripe: YMCA, You're The One That I Want, typical bland Radio 2 fodder. |

Couldn't they have found a stand-in to do a live show ?
Where were the regular ones aren't they normally hanging around waiting for the opportunity ? |

Very sorry to hear about Tony's illness and I hope it's not too long before we see him back
As for possible standins I'm a little surprised that they didn't approach someone like Mark Goodier who is freelance and runs a production company which does other work for the BBC and who has had years of experience of doing chart rundowns in his days on Radio One
Or perhaps they did - I guess availability would be a problem at such short notice
Or what about letting Phil Swern himself have a go at doing it - he's got the musical knowledge and puts the show together anyway and I've heard him on the SW show where he acquitted himself very well

I think that doing a chart based show like POTP is far more specialised than something like the breakfast show which regularly has other presenters when CE is away
To do POTP properly you need someone with decent musical knowledge and preferably someone who was around when the tracks being played were originally hits ideally with experience of chart type shows and with the exception of JW that probably rules out most of the regular presenters currently on Radio 2 - come to think of it perhaps one of us should apply for the gig but there again perhaps not because we probably couldn't do the bad jokes

| We never have a substitute presenter when Tony goes on holiday, he always pre-records. I guess if there was an on going problem probably a standin would come in. Mark Goodier works for Smooth Radio and not contracted for Radio 2 anymore. Anyway Mica Paris covered his BBC London show and I don't know at this time who is his Magic show, but KMFM is recorded in the week. At the end of the day it's unforeseen and best for speedy recovery. |

Don't be silly Mark - of course they care about Tony's state of health
Any complaint is not against him but rather about the station's management not being prepared for such events
And by the way as I said Mark Goodier is freelance - he may have a contract with Smooth but I think you will find he is free to do other work exactly like Lyn Parsons is - as I said his company Wise Buddha already does work for the BBC including producing Sounds of the Seventies as far as I recall

He said Tony has the history of opening radio stations and David Hamilton has the history of closing them. |

Seeing as how it was a countdown of (more-or-less) the best-selling songs of the 70s and 80s I don't know how you can says it's a case of the "idiots in charge" dumbing down - if anything you should blame the record buyers of the past for having such bland tastes! |

Yes, I agree. One thing that isn't acknowledged much these days is that there were two distinct camps among lovers of "current" music during the first half of the 70s: the first was the people who listened primarily to the chart music and idolised "pop stars", and the second was those (like me) who went to see live performances of bands on the college and town hall / marge venue circuit who were outside the mainstream "pop" circles.
For many of my fellow music lovers, it was definitely uncool to admit to watching TOTP between 1971 and 1976 due to the awful rubbish that made the Top 20. As Ian says, it's all credit to people's appalling tastes that these records entered the charts - and that's why I switched off on Saturday. The bulk of it was dire! |

Perhaps I was a bit unfair in my description of those in charge of musical policy. As stated above, it's the fault of the Great British public for buying all this Boney M drivel in the first place. We're certainly still paying the cost 40 years later.
Talking of TOTP, yes it was uncool to watch it in the early 70s, all that glam rock stuff which I never liked. I remember admitting to a friend in about 1972 that I'd watched the previous night's TOTP. He looked at me with contempt, at which point I said (unconvincingly): 'but only because I thought Deep Purple might be on'. |

Funny thing is that I saw Deep Purple play Plymouth ABC at about that time ("Deep Purple In Rock" etc). It was a Thursday night and here they were playing just after they'd appeared on TOTP (which was recorded the previous evening as usual). They played a great set, I recall. Very loud too!
Another excellent band I saw a few times in that period was a band fronted by a certain Robert Fripp........ |

Deep Purple In Rock, from 1970, is one of my favourite albums, seven superb songs, all extremely loud except for the sublime Child In Time, and that is pretty bloody loud come to think of it!
I first saw King Crimson in 1969 at Hyde Park with the Stones. They were fairly unknown at the time and I didn't really appreciate them. They were of course performing In The Court Of The Crimson King, another classic album.
Funny how a thread can change from Boney M to Deep Purple/King Crimson! |

I can honestly say that when I saw Deep Purple at Preston Guildhall in the early 70's - not a huge venue by rock standards - it was and remains the loudest gig I have ever experienced and it certainly left a lasting impression in more senses than one

And quite rightly!!!
Incidently, I think the 1972 tour was used by Deep Purple to promote "Strange Kinda Woman" which I heard for the first time at that gig and which they definitely performed on TOTP. It's really funny seeing DP live on stage with a huge backline of amps and making a huge sound and then seeing them miming so feebly on TOTP!
I know a now-retired BBC Studio Resources Manager who worked on TOTP, among other programmes, at Television Centre before the show was moved to Elstree, and he said the "heavy" bands were very stressful because they made the studio rehearsals a shambles and were always out of their heads during the recording and, of course, the FM gets it in the ear from the Director when the studio isn't under control.
My friend was the Floor Manager on the infamous "Lulu" show in which Jimi Hendrix appeared live - and whose impromptu performance caused the show to over-run wildly!

My former colleague and friend Cliff (who also worked for the BBC) was a cameraman at that event. You can occasionally see him in the BBC movie of the event at stage right near the speaker stack. |

| I saw Deep Purple at Wembley Arena in about 1974/5 (or Wembley Empire Pool as it was then). I know I enjoyed it, but my main memory is being crushed against a wall at Wembley Park station afterwards by the huge crowd, it was absolutely terrifying. |
