Hooray! Programmes presented by the person I've long considered to be Britain's finest radio DJ ever, John Peel, can be now be downloaded and listened to in the comfort of your own eardrums.
To quote The Verge: "John Peel's record collection has already been digitized, and now, hundreds of his live BBC 1 shows have been, as well. SoundCloud user +dB has uploaded 458 radio episodes from the late DJ, comprising more than 900 hours of music. The episodes date from 1967, when Peel was at Radio London, to 2004, when he completed his final shows for the BBC."
What a fine legacy.

It's OK on all the machines (Windows and Mac) in my office - obviously, otherwise I couldn't have copied the URL. |

I'll try it again later as I'd like to hear some early shows... I wasn't a great fan of his later shows but I really liked to hear him talking. He seemed a really nice guy. I have a couple of pictures of him driving one of my old cars.. a Ford Edsel.. _________________ Johnnie Walker read out my message on Pirate Radio! 13/8/07

An Edsel? Wow - a rarity.
I met Peely a couple of times. The first time was at a Rag Ball at Plymouth Polytechnic in the mid-70s. As a means of blagging free albums from record companies I wrote the music review pages for the student magazine and before Peely went on stage as DJ/MC for the night I did a quick interview with him for the magazine. He was very gracious and a thoroughly nice bloke (he carried his gear in a Mini van!). Before we parted, I hastily scribbled a request for him to play a record for our Head of Department, whose nickname was "Captain Video" and who was at the gig that night. He didn't read it out on the night, which disappointed me so I left it. However, he did read it out on his Monday evening show - and played the requested record! The number of fellow-students - as well as local friends - who heard it was amazing.
The next time I met him was many years later in a lift at BBC Television Centre, by which time he'd had his hair cut quite short. A freelance film cameraman friend of mine and I were visiting BBC News and we were in a lift when the doors opened and in walked Peely. I belatedly thanked him for playing the request a decade before and told him the story. In his understated manner he replied: "My pleasure entirely. Not that I can recall the event but that's not important is it?". He then chuckled and we all walked out of the lift.
Not sure what he was doing at TVC! |

Looks like, perhaps not unsurprisingly, that the shows have been removed from Soundcloud. Shame. |

Yes, I understand that the BBC's solicitors have been knocking on doors on the grounds of breach of copyright. |
