Apparently Dave Lee Travis has been arrested on suspicion of sexual offences This is not connected to the Jimmy Savile investigation. Dave Lee Travis ( DLT ) or the Harry Cornflake was a big Radio One star in the 70's and 80's. He left Radio 1 in 1993 under a storm for announcing on air he had to leave with changes at the station he didn't like.

As I may have mentioned before I've met DLT on several occasions - mainly when he used to be doing the Radio One Roadshow in North Devon but I also used to often speak with him at the St Helens Show back in the seventies and eighties - apparently it remains the largest free admission show in Europe
Whilst one should never prejudge the outcome of any police enquiry I will frankly be amazed if anything comes of this matter
I think that if the sexual culture prevalent over 40 years ago is going to be challenged then a great many musicians and presenters should be looking over their shoulders
Funnily enough I reread Johnnie Walker's autobiography last week and in it he refers to the time when he was on the pirate ships and female 'fans' used to be brought to the ship to meet him - he doesn't say exactly how old they were but I think that type of thing was regarded as quite normal in that era _________________ Are you ready for a Ruddles? |

I was just thinking about the 'Swinging Sixties' after I read Mark's post and had the same thoughts as you. It's near enough 50 years ago and the culture rightly or wrongly was very different.
It was mentioned on another thread how many groupies who looked over 18 would throw themselves at presenters, and groups.
I just wonder where it's all going to end?

I was watching (against my better judgement) TOTP from 1977 on BBC4 this evening. It was awful by the way, but sure enough Kid Jensen was surrounded by young girls of about 16. I remember back in the 60s the TOTP presenters always being surrounded by attractive girls, even Pete Murray. It seemed a normal thing to do. Showbiz types always get the girls.
I dare say most of it is / was pretty harmless and I guess all DLT ever did was a bit of groping. He might not even be charged. |

I can tell you exactly how these things come about
The Savile scandal was a gift to the British gutter press who were probably to some extent jealous that ITV got the story before them
So their next thought was 'who else might have been doing similar things within the BBC'
So they probably did a trawl of every single Radio One presenter in the 60s and 70s and almost certainly did their utmost to dig up dirt on everyone and probably DLT drew the short straw
We all know from the Leveson Inquiry that there has for years been a very close and very unhealthy relationship between the tabloid press and the police - and especially the Met - so it seems rather a coincidence that over the last few days the gutter press have been running stories about DLT and Hey Presto - he gets arrested a few days later
Anyone who lives in the real world knows full well that the corrupt British press effectively run this country and when they've got it in for you heaven help you
I find the whole thing quite ridiculous _________________ Are you ready for a Ruddles? |

If they're going to start pulling shows because a presenter or actor has done a bit of groping we'll all be watching blank screens and listening to the speaking clock. That's showbiz! |

Now if only I could remember the names of the men who groped me in the 60s I could go to the police and get some compensation. |

The problem with allowing these retrospective/historical investigations is that it opens the way for the net to be widened, for example, many programmes that were shown on prime-time BBC TV in the 70s were openly racist, homophobic, sexist, ageist and every other kind of ist you can imagine:- that is what it was like: and we all laughed along- well most of us did, I was too young to understand but maybe those programmes have had a lasting impact on many people. So let’s go back and arrest the producers/ actors/writers and everyone else involved in the production and broadcast of those “offensive” and illegal programmes. They wouldn’t be allowed today! |

Exactly.
And every 'larger than life" character seems to be considered fair game, dead or alive. Freddie Starr, DLT, Cyril Smith, Les Dawson... I could make a list and tick them off. _________________ Ron |

I knew that DLT wouldn't have been involved in anything like child abuse - the whole suggestion is completely ridiculous
I think Magic FM have made a huge mistake in taking him off air - whatever happened to the great British concept of 'innocent until proved guilty' - and he hasn't even been charged with any offence to date
I think once this whole fiasco is over Magic might seriously regret their decision as I'm sure DLT will get plenty of offers elsewhere _________________ Are you ready for a Ruddles? |

I think that particular baby was thrown out with the bathwater long ago.
We now seem to have instant verdict, without the niceties of evidence, trial, jury or judge, by media, press, tv and so-called social.
Good to see Lord McAlpine going after those who have indulged in careless talk - http://www.guardian.co.uk/media/2012/nov/15/mcalpine-solicitor - it's probably what some others would have done, if the allegations against them had been made while they were alive. _________________ Ron |

Ask Matthew Kelly.
I felt a bit sorry for DLT, he should not be taken off air just for being arrested.
If grabbing a woman's boobs decades ago is now classed as an offence I expect he won't be the last. |

I'm sure it won't, but it's bordering on the ridiculous now if that is all it was.

Camilla Long of the ST wrote an article because of theAung San Suu Kyi story. In it she describes who he kept groping her
http://www.thesundaytimes.co.uk/sto/newsreview/features/article1061997.ece[/code]
Now I don't for a second think that DLT has anything to do with child molesting but it's pretty odd behaviour for a man of his age _________________ I will not be pushed, filed, stamped, indexed, briefed, debriefed or numbered. |

Can't access the article Six as it appears to be password protected
However on the general point to me it seems quite odd that this point should only be raised at this stage if it is alleged to have happened a while ago
I think it might be a case of certain people jumping on bandwagons for their own personal benefit _________________ Are you ready for a Ruddles? |

Dave has been arrested for the second time. This is a tragedy for DLT he seems this has ruined his career. I can't see anyway back at present, although he has full backing from the Magic management. I feel for him at present.

It's not a crime simply to be arrested Mark
Just ask anyone whom the police happen to have on their radar for 'catch of the month'
I have to admit that even I was arrested a few years ago over something totally ridiculous and needless to say nothing came of it and I was released within half an hour and I even got a lift home courtesy of the 'Old Bill'
Sometimes if the Police get some silly complaint they have no choice but to arrest people but the vast majority of such cases never go any further _________________ Are you ready for a Ruddles? |

It remains to be seen who is the victim in this....
The british legal system leaves much to be desired. We can only hope it won't take someone's suicide for its deficiencies to be addressed. |

Well it's quite clear that whatever offences he may have committed - and there hasn't been any trial yet- this does not even come close to the antics of Savile and certain others
As far as I can gather he's being done for groping a few women many years ago and whilst I don't in any way seek to defend such behaviour the fact is it was par for the course at the time amongst radio DJ's and I know for a fact that others used to do exactly the same when they were presenting live gigs away from radio coverage
People who abuse children should never be allowed to get away with it however many years may have elapsed but quite frankly this case is a ridiculous waste of money _________________ Are you ready for a Ruddles? |

Dave Lee Travis appeared in court today and released on bail over sex allegations. " Leaving the court after the short hearing after which he answered to his original name David Patrick Griffin, but said " he's called Dave Lee Travis - " He was confronted by the cameras outside, - and said it would take 3 hours to speak - but there wasn't any sound bites he also said - " he's got support of family and friends" also said "My wife is not here today and the reason that she is not here today is because I detest hare-coursing." ( Probably referring to the press following them )
http://www.itv.com/news/story/2013-08-23/dave-lee-travis-in-court-on-assault-charges/
I wonder when he's cleared he will be back on the Radio or else where he will make a big story out of this? I believe he's innocent. He does seem to be worn down with this and he seems to have a slight problem walking. |

I'm very pleased to observe the way he treated the gutter press - he's quite right about the undesirability of sound bites which the press like to use - I admire his attitude in standing up to them it's about time someone did _________________ Are you ready for a Ruddles? |

He'll probably appear on TV to soundbite when he's cleared, but then look closely what the press write and start suing. He might know more anyway and waiting. |

It's not he who will 'do the soundbite' as you put it Mark - that is entirely controlled by editorial policy within the gutter press
If he is acquitted - yes the press will report it - but they'll be really disappointed that they haven't got the story they really looked forward to _________________ Are you ready for a Ruddles? |

An even bigger nightmare is the number of people who post bits of information or mis-information about the case on the internet. |

Does anyone reckon we'll now be hearing that particular track on POTP when appropriate or on Radio 2 in general?
Me thinks not - I feel really sorry for the guy - as Colin says he's already had two trials - the first by the gutter press and the second by due process - and had his life and reputation ruined not to mention having to sell his house and seeing his wife suffering major stress as a result of the whole unnecessary charade
I really hope that it's decided not to force him to have to undergo a retrial on the two unresolved charges - I've met him several times and am absolutely certain that he is simply being made a scapegoat for the crimes of others - notably one Mr Savile _________________ Are you ready for a Ruddles? |

Don't need another retrial as he's been found not guilty. Too many celebrities are getting arrested then rearrested with 12 + charges for the jury to decide. I wonder what would have happened he he was only trailed on one charge?
Anyway he had to sell his house to pay for this. He also didn't like the media witch hunt. |
