I am so sad to hear this news - Brothers-In-Law, Marriage Lines, The Good Life, Ever Decreasing Circles as well as many other roles both comic and serious. What a terrific performer.
On the BBC News today they talked about his Hamlet and how he discussed with Kenneth Branagh which one of them performed the speediest version on stage .
Also memorable was his Malvolio in Thames TV's Twelfth Night. |

Sad news indeed. Apart from all the sitcoms and Shakespeare I'll always remember his performance as Sir Clixby Bream in one of the Inspector Morse stories. Truly creepy and unpleasant _________________ I will not be pushed, filed, stamped, indexed, briefed, debriefed or numbered. |

Very sad news. Such a fine actor and he's done so many voice overs as well.
I loved him in Ever Decreasing Circles.
RIP

A truly great actor in every venture he has undertaken - I agree with Helen in that my favourite was his performance in 'Ever Decreasing Circles' - but I expect he'll be remembered for playing Tom Good in 'The Good Life' - also a great series

A superb actor, others have already mentioned The Good Life and Ever decreasing circles.
Also loved Monarch of the Glen and who can forget the Roobarb and Custard voice over.
I also remember him as the horribly creepy Clixby Bream in Morse (Death is now my neighbour)
And who remembers him as the mad vicar in a episode Midsomer Murders?
What an actor. RIP Richard. |

I always think of him as Martin in Ever Decreasing Circles when I see our kitchen towel roll with an untidy bit at the bottom and just HAVE to tear it off! . He has left us with so much to laugh about. |

I still occasionally do that Tom whistle that he did in The Good Life, you know the bit from Over the Rainbow.
Don't forget his radio work too: a brilliant Bertie Wooster to Michael Hordern's Jeeves in What Ho! Jeeves, the radio adaptations of Doctor in the House and Doctor at Large and each year for many years on Radio 4 Christmas Briers. |

Me too, Helen but I have to admit that Peter Egan who played Paul the neighbour was a draw, also, for me in that.
I somehow think that Richard Briers was the sort of person who would be genuinely surprised at how the news of his death has been received ...I think he would think it would pass without much comment in the public realm.

Me too Becky!
I noticed that Ever Decreasing Circles is on Gold tomorrow morning and again early in the afternoon. Not sure if it's the start of the series, but I've set it to record.

Becky, I was introduced to Peter Egan once in a theatre foyer and, although I was heavily pregnant at the time, my knees still turned to jelly |

Wow Becky, don't run too fast!
Sorry dear Richard, this is veering into the P.Egan Fan Club but you were too nice to mind, so, does anyone remember a very creepy TV serial some years ago in which he played a sinister charismatic character who was up to no good and was possibly killed and the very last scene showed a distant castle and a portrait of him or his ancestor intimating that he was still very much alive and a force for evil?
I could look it up on the IMDB website but this is more fun. |

This was it! The Dark Side of the Sun 1983 in which he played Raoul (30 years ago but still memorable):
British photographer Don Tierney is killed in a car-crash on the island of Rhodes. When his widow, Anne, goes there to complete his assignment, she is apparently haunted by his ghost. Does the key to his death lie in the crusader castle of Hagios Theodoros, where influential political figures meet in secret? And what of the handsome owner of the castle, Raoul Lavallière, who takes a romantic interest in Anne? Supernatural forces and human conspiracies combine, leading Anne and her friends into danger and a confrontation with a 700-year-old power. |

I watched an episode of Ever Decreasing Circles the other night ( the one where Ann is in hospital) and enjoyed it just as much as first time round. Some great acting including the dotty neighbours,Howard and Hilda, in their matching outfits. |

Yes, Becky, I love seeing what matching sweaters they'll turn up wearing next! It is such a lovely show. Is the hospital one where Martin gets in a terrible mess in the kitchen and lovely Paul helps him to clear up? |
