According to the ST column by Paul Donovan, Radio 3 were very careful that the presenters departing as a result of the schedule changes would not say anything controversial in their final bradcast.
==================================
Mark Russell, who was the co-host, with Robert Sandall, of Mixing It, which for 16 years featured experimental and improvised music, says on his blog: “Some listeners wondered why Robert and I didn’t make a statement on air. The reason is because it wouldn’t have been broadcast. We recorded our final show yesterday, a few hours before it was broadcast. A BBC senior editor sat through the whole thing. I can’t ever remember that happening before.” _________________ His name was ernie ........ and he drove the fastest milk cart in the west..... |

Ernie,
I was quite shocked to learn about this last week and indeed Mark Russell originally posted a link/statement on our sister board (the new R3 board) and it is very revealing and sad to read the whole thing and see Roger Wright's (controller) involvement:

Congrat's on the new board for R3ok. Is this a new venture of yours?
Anyway best of luck with it. I must book mark it to have the ocassional look-in. _________________ His name was ernie ........ and he drove the fastest milk cart in the west..... |

I have just read the full message written by Mark Russell and the R3 controller sounds like a control freak and a rather unsavoury character. His approach would seem to be more at home in a commercial station than a public service broadcaster. _________________ His name was ernie ........ and he drove the fastest milk cart in the west..... |

I suppose it is but, like this place, I didn't set it up, but was invited to get involved. I try not to refer to it as r3ok even tough the creator made that the address. we call it, for the moment the New R3 Boards.
R3 are closing all their current BBC messageboards tomorrow and replacing with five programme-specific boards and a jazz board. This was very unpopular as it doesn't offer a general 'Music Chat' type board, nor a New Music forum, nor anywhere to talk about the MOST popular shows nor the concerts they broadcast

Please do. The independent R3board was set up two weeks ago and already has more members than R2ok!
It can be intimidating in an academic or cerebral way; many threads are populated by (proper) composers, (proper) musicians, teachers and some truly knowledgable people. I pretend to be one of the latter and get away with it, sometimes

I read Paul Donovan's column this morning (it's usually a good read) and it sounds like madness. I don't listen to R3 so can't comment on anything in specific but have read enough to think it won't be popular.
As for the message boards they are doing just the opposite to what they have done to the R2 ones.....
Where do they get these Controllers from? R2's is just as bad.

Interesting article by Geoffrey Wheatcroft in today's Guardian. Wheatcroft himself is quite a good broadcasters in a Boris Johnson type of way.

Very interesting. I agree with the point about radio forming a part of education. It applies equally to other networks as well.
