I've just noticed the Radio 2 playlist of the last few weeks includes Fleetwood Mac, Rod Stewart, Alison Moyet, Johnny Hates Jazz, Sinead O'Connor and Orchestral Manoeuvres In The Dark.

I suppose it's great these bands are still making music, but how come they're all suddenly re-appearing? Where was Radio 2 during the wilderness years? Can we hope more "old" bands get their new stuff played instead of that one hit?

Sorry, I mainly can't get over the fact Johnny Hates Jazz are back and getting airplay.

And they're sounding exactly as if their latest single was recorded more than 25 years ago - and I say that in a positive way Very Happy

It's because 40 is the new 20. We have, in fact, two separate societies now, there's the sea of young folk, non working, highly educated in pointless subjects, most of whom cannot play a note of real music on a real instrument, and then there's the rest of us. We live in different worlds on the same planet. Because the young folk behind us aren't pushing us into old age, they don't want to fill our shoes: we have to stay young to save the world. Yes it falls to us again. We are the generation that invented everything, the young folk are users not doers, they want everything presented to them in isolation on an interactive screen which they can understand how to use but not why or how it works. That is the problem. It's the same with music. So we're back, and it feels good, the idea that we can die in 40 or 50 years time while still in our our 20s, is actually quite appealing.

Ruddles - yes, the most puzzling/appealing thing about all these acts is that they've gone back to the original sound (although Godawful Fleetwood Mac one does sound like people who've had a rock n roll lifestyle)

Rachel - interesting theory! Does seem that for all the talk of "user- generated content" it's the same stuff coming around again and again.

I think it's great some of these old bands are making a comeback/producing new music.

I do like especially the new Johnny Hates Jazz single.

Richard Allinson on his weekend shows has been playing some of these old group/singers new recordings for some while-it's seems the daytime schedules take some time "to catch up".

I remember a couple of years ago, America made a comeback. They had an album written and produced (in the old style) by Fountains of Wayne and Ken did an extensive interview... but not a single new song was played! It's good to hear new stuff, Radio 2 shouldn't be afraid to play it to us.
