Wow, Nadal is out! Poor chap, he had hurty knees apparently although he didn't make a big thing of it.
His Belgian opponent, a certain Mr Darcis, played superbly and on at least two occasions anticipated Nadal's drop shot and had set off in successful pursuit seemingly before Nadal had even struck the ball. He did well. |

It's improved Andy Murray's chances of progressing but still sad to see a world class player going out so early _________________ Are you ready for a Ruddles? |

To be fair Nadal didn't blame his poorly knee. And there I was thinking I was going to see him play when I go to Wimbledon on Friday! Oh well, I won't have divided loyalties now - it will have to be Mr. Murray that gets my support. Although to (mis)quote Andy - anyone but Federer- will do. |

Remember that Nadal didn't play last year and Andy got to the final, albeit he lost and probably will again if he gets there.
I like Federer though so I don't mind if he wins again this year. |

Ooooh nooooo Federer is far too arrogant. I think he lost a lots of fans (at least the tennis fans that I talk to) when he wore that terrible white and gold blazer afew years ago. He very rarely gives any credit to his opponents whether he wins or loses. |

I couldn't believe my eyes when he walked on to the court for the first time in that ..he looked a right proper charlie
Poor Rafa ..I'm so disappointed for him ....very gracious in defeat
Serena's interpretation of the All England Club rule of playing "almost entirely in white"
Disappointment for Heather Watson ...that could have been down to her recent illness but Laura Robson is one set up in her match with Kirilenko. |

Thank goodness for Laura Robson - she played really well and far more consitently than usual.
As for Serena - well, she doesn't think that any rules apply to her does she? |

Well it's been a funny old day altogether hasn't it? At least Andy got through OK and I enjoyed seeing Laura Robson and Gina? Raymond win their match and Fleming and Marray too. |

Hasn't it been weird! Would also like Serena Williams to go out. What has happened to Venus though, is she still suffering from that illness? I've not been able to watch that much so far but I've not heard any mention of her.

She is not playing at Wimbledon due to a back injury but she still has ongoing problems with her illness.
It's a shame as she always seemed the most likeable of the 2 sisters. |

Thanks Toggy, I was away most of last week so missed a lot of the build up to the start of Wimbledon.
Yes she is the nicer of the 2. I remember her, probably one of her first times at Wimbledon, when there were horrendous weather problems and she was helping to answer the phones to say what was happening.

Laura will be in the top thirty in the world after her Wimbledon efforts
She's done really well and at only 19 years of age she has plenty of time to improve and gain more experience at the top level
As for Serena the least said the better _________________ Are you ready for a Ruddles? |

I'm glad Serena Williams is out as well. Shame Laura couldn't have progressed but she's still young enough.

Anyone see the all Mac match, Macnamara/Macnamee V MacEnroe/MacEnroe? Took me back to when the Aussies played and of course MacEnroe. A real tonic to watch them lark around!

I did,Helen,and what a treat it was
Bet Johnny Mac didn't see himself playing in the Gentlemen's Invitational during his playing days.
I was often a lone voice amongst my circle in cheering J McEnroe on in his playing days ...what a player he was!
A Wimbledon of upsets!
C'mon Andy ! |

I caught the old fella playing doubles. My old Mum used to call him Mighty Mac, back in the days when he fought for the crown with The Swedish Womble.
That was a helluva game yesterday...Murray got through on sheer will. _________________ life is what happens to you while you're busy making other plans |

Great win for Andy, sheer guts, pity it was spoiled at the very end, the last stroke, by his opponents 'challenge' call, that really spoiled the crowd's enjoyment _________________ -

It said on the radio this morning that a ticket to see Andy in the semis today could cost as much as twelve thousand pounds... ...nothing else, just that! My couch is looking very good right now for a viewing seat!
I'm hoping that Andrew Castle has been given the afternoon off and that someone like Barry Davies takes the mic for Andy's match but I'm not holding my breath
Johnny Mac and his brother Patrick got beaten by Jeremy Bates and Anders Jarryd last night....the only time I can recall when my allegiance has been with a foreign team when there has been a Brit in the opposing team.
I like seeing old champions in the royal box......the lovely Stefan Edberg is there today.
First set to Djokovic in his match with Del Potro...going with serve in the second. |

What an absolutely crazy decision to close the roof. There's time to play at least another set. I can remember them playing until 9.15 at least in years gone by. Moaning Pole

Not in the slightest.
Andrew Neil is on form on Twitter, just tweeted 'roof built to stop Cliff Richard singing, not to thwart Murray'!

Hope your sneaky is right,raver..
Well it seems the occasion got to Sabine Lisicki but that's to take nothing away from Marion Bartoli who played supremely well
Both are lovely girls and I'm sure Sabine will learn from this and come back stronger.
A pity, I think, that we no longer see the Duchess of Kent present these trophies ...who can forget the Novotna moment!
A question....there is a fella who looks a little like Colonel Sanders who sits on his own, it seems, in the player's box for near enough every match ....does anyone have a clue who he is? ..I would love to know |

Becky I've been wondering that for years! He seems to be at so many matches!
I really felt for Sabine, I think she'll be back in a final though.
It is a shame the Duchess of Kent no longer attends or any royalty come to that. It's always nice to see former champions in the royal box though.
I thought Sue Barker looked awful though, I don't know where she gets her clothes from! Another jacket that she wore the other day looked equally horrendous. In comparison Tracy Austin looked so well groomed, as she always does IMHO. I was wondering how old she was as I remember her playing as a very young teenager. Sue mentioned age and how old some of the players were when winning a slam, and she said 16 and I think that was 79, so that makes her 50.

The Duke was there, but not the same without the Duchess.
If anyone enjoyed the song that played at the end of Andy's match last night, called What If, there's a free download of it, from Alistair Griffin's site.

I have just come down to earth ...wonderful wasn't it,Helen?
After last years defeat and tears (all round) it was fantastic to see Andy win in such a manner ...he never knew when he was beat..the sign of a true champ.
He must be a shoe -in for Sports Personality of the Year
They played that song again today,raver...thanks for the link
Great weekend of sport for Brits! ....moments to savour. |

Well, Andy was fantastic, winning in straight sets.
And in these modern days we (Mrs W and I, son, his wife and baby) chose to watch the match on son's i-pad as we ate lunch in a local pub garden, many others watched on mobiles.
Me being a Scot, and from Stirlingshire, I had a tear in my eye and at that point the rest of the family all said 'It's time to go John'
Well done Andy Murray! _________________ -

When you think of how many disappointments he had, in those first few finals, it says so much for his character, to keep coming back, improving year by year, amongst arguably the strongest three players ever, at least at the same time, not only holding his own (apart from the finals), until last summer, when the incredibly hard work paid off, first at last year's Wimbers, where I think he really should have beaten Fed, seeing his tears, but then unbelievably, winning the Olympics in some style just a matter of weeks later, then a nerve shredding win in the US Open against Djokovic...the boy's determination is something to behold. And now, though the rankings will say differently, he has every right to believe that he is the world's number one.
Never thought I'd see the day (until last year, when I thought it possible), when the Fred Perry spell would be broken. I only hope my old gal was sitting watching it all, from some celestial vantage point.
I thought Andy should have won Sports Personality last year, tbh. He got my vote. Can't be too much doubt this year though, unless the cycling mafia scupper it, with Mr Froome.
Great day. Simply the best. _________________ life is what happens to you while you're busy making other plans |

Forgot to say before,Helen,I've found out who the Colonel Sanders look-alike is.
His name is David Spearing and he is an Honorary Steward... a position that sees him take his seat in the box for all Centre Court matches after ushering players’ families, partners, coaching teams and other supporters into their designated seats.
There was a piece last night, in between the doubles matches, on people that loved their jobs at Wimbledon and he was one of them.

Great result - historic and really well deserved
I just hope that it encourages many more youngsters to come into tennis
If you compare the situation with golf we all remember when this country simply wasn't a force in the sport and the Americans dominated everything whereas today most of the top players in the world are British and we need to bring the game of tennis in Britain to the same level - and hopefully events today were a big step on the way _________________ Are you ready for a Ruddles? |
