Am I the only person to notice that every time a new presenter takes over during daytime on Radio 2 they always and without fail insist on thanking the previous presenter and the newsreader when handovers occur at the top of the hour
Nothing wrong with politeness in my view but I get the feeling that presenters are told to do it whether they like it or not or mean it or not and its that aspect which I find annoying
It's rather like the situation during November and sometimes even October when almost everyone on television is mandated to wear a poppy whether they like it or not which devalues the whole idea - especially as the poppy to many of us is a symbol of freedom and free choice
Thanking people as a matter of general policy equally devalues the meaning of the phrase and now and again I'd just like to see the thanks being omitted so that when we hear those words on other occasions we know they are genuine and not simply said in order to comply with some Shennan dictat _________________ Are you ready for a Ruddles? |

The one that sticks out in my mind as being false is Tony Blackburn's just after the 1.00pm news on Saturday. He always gushes: "My thanks to Graham Norton for another fabulous show as always." I can't help thinking he didn't actually hear any of it! |

Very true, but his delivery style just makes it sound so false. You can tell he just giving us "DJ speak". |

I know, but that's Tony.
It would be funny if he did actually say what he thought of Graham Norton though. |

I do like Tony Blackburn, I should add! He's a "proper" old-school 60s DJ. Cheesy as hell but what the heck!

I do too, he seems a lovely chap. Yes he's cheesy but I like that and he makes me laugh. |

Now, I believe they really would be speaking the truth if anyone were to say "thank god that annoying & unfunny little twerp has finished" at 9:30am on a Monday to Friday! _________________ Lord Evan Elpuss, Your ideal job is a Lumberjack. |

He was the butt of other DJs' jokes on Radio Caroline. He would plan the "big opening" to his show and cue up his first record. Then the DJ before him would find an excuse to come into studio, find out what record he'll be playing first and then play it as his final track. It used to throw Blackburn completely - to the amusement of everyone else on the ship.
He always took it in good spirits though.
Those were the days of real swashbuckling radio! |

Tony can do no wrong with me.. He and Rosko were my favourites back in the Pirate days..
I try to like Norton and generally I do, but why does he always make out he's doing us a favour by popping in to do the show between other things? He's another celeb who possibly thinks he's bigger than the station itself.. _________________ Johnnie Walker read out my message on Pirate Radio! 13/8/07

Now you're talking mentioning the truly great Emperor Rosko
You all know I don't like American speak in Britain - but Rosko was American so for me had free licence to do his own thing - he is still one of my all time heroes - I'll never forget the first time I heard 'Under My Wheels' by Alice Cooper on his Saturday show _________________ Are you ready for a Ruddles? |

I did Santa - he was truly superb - age has not withered him in any way - I'd love to see him on Radio 2 _________________ Are you ready for a Ruddles? |

Rosco guested on Radio Caroline early this year - from his studio in LA!
I have recordings of Rosko's shows on Big L. His style really put a rocket up the staid and boring BBC Light Programme between 64 and 67 and led to a permanent change for the better. Another great show on Big L was "Kenny & Cash" (Everett & Dave), of which I also have recordings. It makes you realise not only how there's nothing original about Evans' or Wright's shows, but just how predictable and boring British network "popular music" radio is.
Btw, Easter Sunday 2014 is the 50th anniversary of Radio Caroline (the station that started the 60s radio revolution) coming to air from a ship moored 3 miles off Frinton. It's still the best station, in my view (largely because they play only album tracks but never One Direction or Olly Bloody Murs!). |

I've been thinking about this of late.. yes, I think most of the presenters on Radio 2 are boring or dying on their feet.
But, when you think what recorded material they have today to work with... well, it's hardly surprising is it? it's all soooo drab.. mediocre... or ridiculously noisy like Jesse J ( however you might spell it ) just irrititating shouting! (Think of Dusty... how good was she? )
I saw The Saturdays on Strictly over the weekend.. predictable boring "How good do I look" trash.. it's been done so many times before.
No.. think back to the Pirates or early Radio 1. The music was so good they couldn't go wrong.. one fabulous track led into another with only a few words of how good this track is from the presenter ( who didn't go on and on about his new Ferrari or his pub or holidays etc.. )
Do I really want to hear texts about what I had for breakfast or what the car in front is? NO!
The more I think about it, the more annoyed I'm getting about the lack of a decent station for us mature types! It's disgraceful BBC...
