I found it very sad to listen last night and it was difficult to make out what David was saying at certain points. As many have said an end of an era.

I only heard the start of Janice's show but she was full of praise for him as has everyone been.

Yes I found it sad too. I could understand everything he said but had to listen carefully. His natural clarity of enunciation which has always been there helped. What a lovely chap. I'll miss him and his "our kind of music".

My memory of him goes back to Journey Into Space and because of that I used to listen to Cyril Stapleton's Show Band Show as a teenager because David was announcing on it. I've still got his autograph which I queued ages for at one of those Radio Shows in London.

I noticed that too very sad. It does seem the show was recorded sometime ago. Steve Wright did say on SLS " That he used to come in to see him every other Tuesday" . I know Bob Harris has full respect to him on Twitter too.

Just noticed in Radio Times it says Don Black is there for 3 months so heaven knows what will happen after that. Sad

Same time as Russell Davies' show comes to an end..........

I read that this morning, Eileen. Her comments on Michael Ball were interesting as well, I thought, along with the TMS observation.

DJ didn't sound at all well on Sunday, but I'm so glad I listened.

I only caught David's programme very occasionally (my loss) but seeing your link, Helen, (thanks) I followed it and listened to his last programme ...very sad to hear his illness,altered voice but as Eileen has said "His natural clarity of enunciation which has always been there helped."

His last programme started off wonderfully well with the Robert Goulet song that I haven't heard for ages!

Here's an extract from a review of the Journey Into Space CD collection:

"The two main supporting actors for the serial were David Jacobs and Anthony Marriott. Sharing Announcer duties for Journey Into Space with Guy Kingsley Poynter, Jacobs was the vocal backbone for the series, and provided most of the other voices heard throughout the serial, such was his brilliant vocal talent. He became so well-liked amongst the cast and production crew that one of his minor roles, the amiable Frank Rogers, became a regular in The World in Peril."

Isn't it good to hear how much he was liked by his colleagues? He will always be Frank Rogers to me Smile

It's nice to look back and see which songs came up frequently! I saved the same page from Melodies for You when it came to an end.

Did you hear Don Black on Ryan Tubridy yesterday morning? I think he will be good in David's slot and will listen tonight.

I read about a book called "You Must Remember This" about songwriters 1900-1980 which had a foreword by David so I sent for it from Amazon. It arrived today with a little note saying that it was signed by the author (Mark White) and someone else whose signature couldn't be recognised.

I knew immediately that it was David's sig and it matches the one in my old autograph book Smile

. What a lovely unexpected bonus!

Here is a link to a recent local radio programme which looks back at Top of the Pops 3 June 1965 and has an interview with David interspersed with records of the time.

It was recorded only a few weeks before he passed away and he was in good form with some interesting comments and memories. It's available until this Sunday but is well worth a listen. David's section starts at approx. 1hr1min into the programme.

Thanks for this FleetingEileenM. The first year featured (1973) is full of memories for me, not least because it is the year I first left the confines of 'terra-firma'. I flew over the town I live in and was able to identify my home and (then) school from the air. Funnily enough, the track that always reminds me of that day was a 1960s track. I remember hearing 'Good Vibrations' by The Beach Boys on the radio before I left home that day. On a 'spooky' note, in 2005 I had my first cross-channel flight in a light plane, and as I was driving to the airfield to meet up with the pilot, what did I hear Sir Terry Wogan (for it was he) play on my car radio? Yes, twas 'Good Vibrations'!! I was to have three more flights in 1973. Not least the last of them in the latter part of 1973 when I went above the clouds for the first time, very exciting for a teenager! The tracks that always will remind me of that day - There are two, first 'Amoureuse' by Kiki Dee; and the other one was 'Do You Wanna Dance' by Barry Blue. I remember hearing them being played on the coach as we were driving back home. Blimey! Did that all really happen 40 years ago!! Shocked
