It's still white. We have clear sky after a day of rain, so I am getting faintly excited.

Nice clear skies in Newcastle - as I type this it's two-thirds disappeared - might take the camera out for a photo. _________________ Author: “To the Ends of the Earth: A Snapshot of Aviation in North-Eastern Siberia, Summer 1992”

(Don't have a cable release for the camera, so didn't bother with a tripod. Too short an exposure to catch the Earthshine, unfortunately.) _________________ Author: “To the Ends of the Earth: A Snapshot of Aviation in North-Eastern Siberia, Summer 1992”

Thanks for the piccie Cherskiy, we have just come in as I nearly forgot about it, remembered at 2220, been out there since. The old bins were good but not as good as your piccie Cherskiy, I tried with my Fuji S9600, but 300mm is still not nearly enough. There was sidecar and 3 other neighbours out there as I passed my bins around. Wonderful.

Here we go. Almost there now. Great pic Cherskiy. I must get a decent telephoto!

Cherskiy, did you get any more piccies of the eclipse, if they are half as good as the one you posted, they must be great. Any chance you could post anymore, pretty please.

Thanks for the kind words, BB/Highlander - I'm all embarrassed now everyone's putting their faith in me! Here's one I took earlier:
First time I've used this IS lens for astro-photography.... Mare Crisium (Sea of Crises) can be seen plainly in the top right hand quadrant. _________________ Author: “To the Ends of the Earth: A Snapshot of Aviation in North-Eastern Siberia, Summer 1992”

The 'blood red' bit is visible now from up here - mostly Earthshine. The pictures I've posted already are the best I can manage with an effective 640mm lens. Still not pin sharp but a reasonable first try....
Not used to this astro-photography lark - my targets are usually doing about 450 knots in broad daylight.... the neighbours think I am going mad.
Tried to get a shot of the Earthshine but the camera won't pick up anything below 1/8th and there's too much shake, even with the Image Stablising kicking in. Too many drunks wandering home from the pub to drag the tripod outside, and a tripod disables the IS anyway, so I'd need a cable release, which I haven't got. I can see myself buying one soon, though. _________________ Author: “To the Ends of the Earth: A Snapshot of Aviation in North-Eastern Siberia, Summer 1992”

Thanks Cherskiy, they are brilliant, I have not even uploaded mine onto the PC yet, but looking at them on the LCD screen, I have lots of sky and very little moon

I took a few pictures through the lens of my telescope - came out a bit fuzzy but alright. What a sight though! Clear skies, through my scope could clearly see the whole moon and the surrounding stars, was weird to see the moon go blod red!
If there were any clouds in the sky we would have seen the moon dissapear, it's only because there was none that we see it go this colour - enough sunlightis refracted around the earths edge. A cloudy earth will mean the moon will look to dissapear.
If you want to see something else, morning of 12th March (and you'll need to get up early here) the moon will be sitting right under Jupiter.
Oh and by the way, lovely photo's, Chersk - well done. _________________ Some say he once threw a microwave oven at a tramp and that all his potted plants are called 'Steve'.....all we know is, he's called 'The Stig!'. |

I liked the bit on one of the newspaper websites that said you didn't need protective glasses to watch the eclipse of the Moon!
Good description of the Earthshine, Andy.... you normally see it when there's a new moon (or a thin crescent, more like), but a full eclipse is a good opportunity as well.
How many degrees will Jupiter be from the Moon on the 12th? _________________ Author: “To the Ends of the Earth: A Snapshot of Aviation in North-Eastern Siberia, Summer 1992”

Chersk,
it will be below and to the left about 7 degrees away from Jupiter. Have to get up real earl, about 3.30 - 4.20 and it's a last quarter moon.
You'll have to have a clear view of the horizon as Jupiter will only be about 16 degrees above the horizon. Still it should be very bright, round about mag -2. Oh yeah, South East area.

That is a really exceptional pic. My first thought on seeing it was that it should be copyrighted and turned into a greeting card. |

Nod,
They're really great - what kind of exposure time were you using? Particularly like the last one with the copper-red glow.
I'll stick to aircraft - you can do the astronomical stuff! _________________ Author: “To the Ends of the Earth: A Snapshot of Aviation in North-Eastern Siberia, Summer 1992”

Cheers
1 second, 800 ISO, f8.0, 560mm, some processing for brightness & contrast, noise and sharpness.
any longer and you will see the moon moves quite fast !!
Improvements can be made by stacking images, eg with Registax etc , to reduce the noise. |
