Not impressed at all, pretty much from the word (or song) go. What did anyone else think?
Can he not be a bit more imaginitive than asking for folk to tell him what they have accomplished since the start of the show?
Sorry but I don't think I'll bother for the rest of the week. Must admit I've been listening to Smooth Extra for short bursts a lot recently and I've enjoyed the music.

I agree Helen - I had reasonable hopes he might be OK but after several minutes of listening I soon came to the conclusion that he is a very bad stand in for people who actually know about and enjoy music _________________ Are you ready for a Ruddles? |

It's my worst nightmare - it's like 2010 all over again!
I loved Mayo on Radio 5Live, then Bacon came along and ruined my afternoons. I eventually developed a love/hate relationship but there's certainly something about him that grates. He is Alan Partridge but more self-involved and less aware of the world.
Hope he's not a regular for Radio 2, but considering everyone hates him, I've no doubt he'll be back soon. |

It was dreadful
I won't complain the Mayo show is dull again if this is the alternative. |

Stop moaning.
Why not tune into Richard Allinson on Magic for the Drivetime Show equivalent.
Superior radio experience over anything Radio 2 seek to deliver-problem solved. |

Mark much as I like Richard Allinson, it's just not the same thing I'm afraid. I did listen a couple of times last week but I prefer Drive Time unless it's a very poor presenter as Richard Bacon was.

Simon Mayo's one of my favourite broadcasters, and I normally enjoy his show. When he's not on I tend to go to Radio 3 (especially if it's Suzi Klein presenting).
But I must confess I don't even know how to find Magic, let alone listen to Richard Allinson. It used to be 999 AM in the North West but now I've no idea. |

Ian Magic FM went on DAB nationally at the beginning of the year so if you have a DAB radio it will be there.

Ah... ta. Will have a look.
Mind you, I can't get Radio Lancashire on the DAB in my office, but I can on the one in my bedroom next door. Weird! |

I had a similar problem with a station a while ago, I forget which, in that is didn't appear on the DAB list on the radio in the kitchen but it was on the clock radio upstairs. Weird but good luck in finding Magic.

It would appear you can receive more transmitted signals upstairs, eg better reception. They are probably on different transmitters. |

Is one an older radio? My kitchen one is supposedly more sophisticated than the clock radio (both same make) which was newer by 2 years.
The station in question was just greyed out in the DAB list on the downstairs model. I can't remember if I tried it upstairs or not.

I was reading that you had a HUDL 2 elsewhere, Helen.
Why don't you download one of the radio apps and use that to listen to Magic (or anything else) in the Kitchen? |

Thanks Gaz but I can get it on the radio now that it went on national DAB.
It was before I had the Hudl2 that I had problems with another station.

I saw that too and won't be listening, he's terrible. I think Steve Wright was the only regular presenter today...........

Not only is he back, amazingly, but it's my text that's responsible for him opening every show for the next two weeks with the theme from Fraggle Rock. I figure the show couldn't actually get more annoying anyway... |

So it's all your fault Ian...........
I've been listening to Richard Allinson on Magic FM, he's still on now until 8 o'clock.

I'm an infrequent poster on here but felt I would make a comment on Mr Bacon. He is one of those radio presenters who everybody seems to dislike but who also seems to have no trouble finding work. I wonder does he have a filing cabinet full of information on his bosses?
I have often tried to work out what it is about him that grates. I finally came to the conclusion it is because he has no knowledge of ANYTHING. He doesn't seem to possess the slightest iota of general knowledge about any subject - even subjects you would think a radio presenter might at least have a smidgin of interest in - such as music - or entertainment.
During the last US presidential election, Radio 5, in their wisdom, sent him to America to host his show from the states. During the course of the week he had many American political pundits as guests ostensibly to discuss American politics.
It SHOULD have been quite an interesting series of programmes but it was completely stymied by the fact that Mr Bacon didn't seem to have the slightest, single, germ of knowledge of either American politics or even America itself. At one point he even asked what the KY after Louisville meant. There was stunned silence from his American guests.
I just felt embarrassed for him. |

I think you're right about him appearing to know nothing about anything Eric. I don't listen to 5 Live very much so didn't hear his shows from America but I can imagine them. It comes across that he has nothing to say other than to read out listener's emails, texts and tweets about what they have done that day or whenever but to do it constantly is just laziness.
Sadly that format appears to be the norm for so many programmes now BUT some presenters have a way of putting it across that makes it entertaining . Richard Bacon isn't one of them.

I was a regular weekday afternoon listener to Radio 5 all the time the afternoon slot was filled by Simon Mayo. Once Bacon came on as his replacement I just couldn't listen anymore - even though I tried. I wonder how much of their audience did Radio 5 lose at that time.
The thing is, even though he no longer does host the afternoon programme, I never really went back to Radio 5. |
