Heard bits and pieces of the different programmes yesterday,starting with Sara,as I was out most of the day but as a fan of both I LOVED what I did hear...I caught up with Mark Goodier's programme today..an afternoon of nostalgia...just wonderful! Cool

I also loved the anecdotes told by various people about the songs.

I recorded the drama that followed at 7 and have that to look forward to as well as the parts of the programmes I missed.

I heard quite a bit and really enjoyed it. I didn't think I would as I'm a bit fed up with countdown shows!

It was great hearing the Beatles talk about the songs as well. Loved that Mark Goodier mentioned where She Loves You was written, in the Majestic Ballroom in Newcastle where they had played. I only went about twice to a couple of concerts. I knew it was written in Newcastle but rumours at the time were that it was the Mayfair ballroom which wasn't that far from the Maj which turned into a Bingo hall several years later Sad

Yes,I know what you mean about countdown shows,Helen, but these (the ones that I heard) were well worth the listen. Cool

The theatre I saw the Beatles in is now in the process of being turned into a car park ...it missed the bingo boom but has been a picture house and a nightclub since it was a theatre.

I saw the Beatles at the City Hall in Newcastle which still stages concerts although a lot are now at the Arena (a huge shed like place) or at the Sage on the Gateshead side of the river.

I saw them in Nov 63 but they had done an earlier tour with Roy Orbison which must have been at the Majestic.

It's a shame that all these venues are no longer around but they go for the bigger stadiums these days don't they.

You got me thinking about big stadiums,Helen...Shea Stadium was mentioned in one of the programmes ... was that unusual at the time,I wonder or were Americans already having concerts in big venues?

I read today that Van Morrison gave a concert in a street in Ireland to celebrate his 70th birthday.

Around 3,000 people attended the shows, which were held on the street he immortalised in the album Astral Weeks.

I couldn't work out what was going on in Clare Teal's programme on Sunday night. I didn't enjoy it nearly as much as usual. She played a lot of Elvis/Beatles songs sung by other people. If I'm going to hear them I would rather have the originals and I found her usual great programme quite disappointing.

Were a lot of Sunday's Radio 2 programmes devoted to Elvis/Beatles? Any special reason?

Becky I think most of the big concerts in America were at sports stadiums a lot of which were open air. I went past Shea Stadium on the airport transfer bus between JFK airport and La Guardia airport in the 80s, I only knew because of the road signs and the name because of the Beatles!

The whole thing was supposedly because the Beatles and Elvis met 50 years ago on 27 Aug 65. They were counting down the 50 bestselling songs of both of them all day on Monday, so don't know why Clare Teal's programme was linked in Eileen.
