The first live Sounds Of The 60s' with Tony Blackburn started this morning. As many had predicted ' Flowers In The Rain' was his very first record the song his played first 50 years ago on Radio 1. Also featuring Retro Pams jingles, Americas Top 3 from the 60s and Phil Collector Swern had his own feature.

Sorry, but I thought it was dreadful. Apparently we're now restricted to two songs a programme that we haven't heard a thousand times before. Tweets and emails and Tony Blackburn's gushing/stumbling jokey presentation are nothing like the SOTS that went before. Yes, he was around in the 60s, but when he tells you something about a record he's just played you know he's reading out something that Phil Swern wrote for him. I won't be listening again.

On the Radio 2 website it says...

Sounds of the Sixties

4/3/2017

Brian plays tracks where the last word of each song title is the first of the next.

If only. Sad

I'm going to give Tony's programme a go now..

I noticed that too Becky. Then again, for a long time there was still a lot about Tony on the POTP page, long after they sacked him.

It was weird not having Brian on as 8.00. I'm certainly not listening to the mediocre O'Leary - another one who fills in on radio while waiting for his next puerile TV show.

As for SOTS I might listen during the week but I can tired of his very laboured links and I can't stand a lot of texts and emails. (Am I the only one who thinks that this social media rubbish on the radio is horrible) I couldn't give aeronautical intercourse about what bloody breakfast cereal you're eating!

I didn't listen to either shows and not sure if I'll have time to listen to SOTS on iPlayer as don't seem to be enough hours in the day for it.

I'll check the playlist, if there is one, and decide.

I listened earlier. Thought Tony B did well, considering. Of course, he won't have anywhere near the amount of anecdotes etc, that Brian had to tell. Nobody could. But the music choices were good, the twitter and texting wasn't too intrusive and well, you can't go far wrong with 60's music, let's face it. Only two obscure records in 2 hours, which would have pleased a lot of people, I would have thought...and one of them, by Bruce Channel, was pretty damn good.

It's a shame that Brian has gone, but Tony will prove to be a worthy successor.

And Arnold's back... Twisted Evil

I thought it was awful. I can't stand all the references to texts, twitter etc which seem to have taken over nearly everything these days. I really HATE presenters talking over the music and Tony Blackburn did it over and over this morning. I only listened from 7am and definitely won't be trying to listen to the first hour on listen again. IMHO a good show destroyed. Crying or Very sad

I didn't listen as I am still annoyed at the lack of respect shown by the BBC towards Brian Matthew and towards the show in general and towards the listeners.
However, looking at the 'music played', it seems a pretty good show with a nice balance of well known songs and obscurities and more emphasis on the mid/late 60s rather than the pre 1963 mediocrities favoured by his predecessor.
However, I feel Tony has complete control of the music choices and that we are not going to get much edgy stuff like Cream or Hendrix but more of the bland music he likes so much.
If only it wasn't so early....

Why is it on sooooo early?

It was sad listening to the last 8-10 show. But 6am is too early for me

I listened with interest and my first thought was that it wasn't SOTS any more in any shape or form

However after two hours my second thought was that it was a really good show given that it would have been a huge mistake for TB to attempt to present the show in anything other than his own style

I thought it was a nice touch playing Flowers In The Rain as the first track even if it was 'one hour out' - the original play when Radio One started being just after 7am on 30th September 1967 but being that the date didn't coincide I don't suppose it really matters

I entirely agree with Schiz that the mix of music was far better which just shows for me that TB has a lot more input into this show than Brian did on the old SOTS

I also agree that we are likely to see a bias towards pop soul and Tamla Motown to the exclusion of prog rock and the like but overall I like the format although I haven't changed my views on the disgraceful treatment of Brian which brings great shame on the BBC

As I mentioned in a previous post I'm up before 6am every Saturday so I'll certainly continue to listen to the new show but I will miss not having anything even half decent to choose at 8am - still I suppose it just means 5 hours of listening to my own choice of music rather than 3 Smile

I agree that the choice of music was good but I would have liked to hear more of it and less of Tony Blackburn.

I liked the music Tony played and in other circumstances I would have really enjoyed the programme,as I like Tony, but it's just not the same ..it's not on at 8 and it's not Brian!! I will listen to it on Listen Again,I'm not saying I won't, but somethings gone that I really enjoyed and I'm unhappy about that. Sad

I agree with Raver that the texting wasn't that intrusive and hope it stays that way. I also agree with Angela about not liking the talking over records but that's what you get with Tony so that wasn't a surprise.

I haven't found time yet to give the new SOTS a listen, but I'm encouraged by the comments here about fewer obscurities and less emphasis on the early years.
I agree this idiotic schedule can't possibly survive for long!

I checked out the playlist yesterday and smiled at the very first track. A lot of good ones so maybe I'll get round to listening. I had a feeling we'd get some talk over the music so that is a bit of a shame.

I've still not managed to hear Brian's final show yet. I'd better record it from iPlayer just in case time flies.

Welcome to Warwickshire Bear as well. Smile

I enjoyed the show and the music although I do wonder if having more popular songs will become a bit boring after a few weeks. I liked the mix of music on Bryan's show.
Incidentally, I listened to the show on I-player when Dermott O'Leary's show began. I don't get up at 6a.m. on a Saturday!
I also think that Bryan was treated abominably.

Now here's a thing. I've just looked at today's (6/3/17) schedule and the midnight repeat shows Brian Matthew's photo & credits him as presenting the show!! http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio2/programmes/schedules/2017/03/06

Agreed Rolling Eyes

Too much talking over starts and ends of records, too many 'and errs', too many texts etc , too many unfunny attempts at jokes, limited selection of music (I hope the more obscure records aren't limited to the producers list) and then he mentioned Arnold Rolling Eyes

And if you listen to the programme on iPlayer then you'll find that the midnight repeat of SOTS is, indeed, a repeat, but it's a repeat of one of Brian's programmes.

For my taste I found the music with TB at the helm lacked variety.

I only listened from 7am today but TB seemed to talk a bit less over the music, has he been looking on here I wonder! Too many plugs for Dermot O'Dreary though and I can't stand all the texts and tweeting! I will probably keep listening to the second hour, but won't bother with the first.

Agreed Very Happy a slight improvement not talking over the start of records, now if he could only stop the unfunny jokes, reading out so many texts / emails...

Well I finally got to listen to the 2nd edition of SOTS with TB on iPlayer.

Not sure if it was me not feeling 100% BUT I was a bit underwhelmed even though I'd looked at the playlist ahead of listening and thought 'oh there are some good ones on it'. As I listened it just didn't feel right.

So sadly I've decided that it's not going to be a regular fixture for me unless I happen to be up early on a Saturday (rarely) as I don't think it works on iPlayer on a regular basis.

I'll still check the playlist and think I'll just dip in to whatever part the interesting track is on.

As I said before Helen I think it's a good show but I agree it's just not SOTS

I think it's a great shame that we couldn't have the chance of listening to this show between 7am and 9 am - roughly the hours of the old week time Radio One Breakfast Show- followed by 2 hours of the old SOTS thus losing an hour of the truly dreadful Graeme Norton

That way it would be the best of both worlds - and Helen you'd get to listen to SOTS at a more reasonable time Smile Smile Smile

Do we really need a Breakfast Show on a Saturday though?

SOTS 7-9am would be fine for me!

Well about fifteen years ago I did know a lot of senior people within the BBC and various other media organisations but I guess most of them have moved on by now or become free lance which seems to be the trend these days - still one thing life has taught me is that one should never say 'never' Smile

Just think about Brexit Trump and Leicester City and that's not even beginning to mention my own experiences which I never ever thought would happen Very Happy

I'm listening now Helen. Does Tony get paid by the word? Not being a morning person (it came as a shock when I first discovered there were actually two 6 o'clocks in the day) I could never listen to him at that time of the day. It's exhausting.

The music is good though and we seem to have got away from Phil (look at my massive collection) Swerne show

I've been here before.... I wouldn't be without my radio recorder! I'm not an early morning person by a looooong chalk and I didn't even listen live to Brian at 8am let alone 6!
I have a Roberts "Radio R" ( to replace my older Roberts units ), it's cheap and will record up to four sessions so I have it set to record Tony's Golden Hour, The first part of Sots, the second part of Sots and the first part of PotPs... a 4Gb stick will hold about 150 hours of great shows.
So when dreary O'Leary or Zoe jabber jabber Ball come on I hit the play button... it's fantastic. all for about 50 from Ebay... Smile

Those Roberts recording radios aren't made anymore, so hold on to yours and look after it SantaFe!

I reckon TB has pulled a masterstroke by introducing the new feature 'The Collector's Collosul Collection' because by giving Mr Swern two five minute slots each week he has effectively prevented him from infecting the rest of the show with those ridiculous American B side obscurities

And yes Schiz the music is far better than before if a little thin on the rock genre of those years

I'm really struggling to get the correct spelling of one of the words mentioned in the title of that particular feature so I think my memory must be going as well Laughing

I'm amazed Helen... last time I looked, they were on Ebay.. in fact I bought another! The older silver ones were better because you had an "electronic" programme guide so you could click on the programme to record it. One of my silver ones packed up on the recording side but the other is fine.
Shame about the Recorder R, I'm very pleased with them even without the EPG feature. I have many SD cards full of SOTS & POTPs.... now and then I "rename" the files to read as appropriate...
The best recording run I did was the 50s pop up station... lots of great stuff on there..
