I am looking forward to this short series in which he plays records he heard and loved as a child growing up in Oz. Fred Astaire, George Formby, Flanagan & Allen, novelty songs all sounds delightful and just my cuppa tea Smile

It begins on Wednesday 13th Jan at 10pm.

PS: He is the only entertainer who has reduced me to tears of laughter in the theatre - the other is Ken Dodd Very Happy

He has a wicked sense of humour,Eileen, that has had me laughing out loud over the years. I'll be giving his programme a listen. Very Happy

There was An Audience With Ken Dodd on the TV over the Christmas period which I recorded but haven't yet watched.

Great review from Gillian,Eileen

Am enjoying Barry's nostalgic look back on his radio days. He's a natural and knows his stuff.
He mentioned in his second programme that nobody whistles anymore....reminded me of my Dad who whistled all day long. Very Happy

A gentle,enjoyable hour's listening.

Loved this first programme,Eileen...(I was mistaken ,there are 4 not 3)

Picturing Dame Edna tapping her Jimmy Choo shoes to her disco version of Waltzing Matilda made me chuckle.Laughing

Like Bill Kenwright I enjoy what Barry has to say as much as I enjoy the music

My favourite of the night..Brother (Buddy) Can You Spare A Dime..love that one..

One I wasn't aware of. Will certainly be looking it up on the iPlayer as it is right down my street. Another one I might time shift to Sunday as it seems to be very much in line with used to be their regular Sunday output.

I've got one left to listen to. It's been a little gem of a series. With this, as my personal fave...

Bud 'n Ches...Hey Neighbour.

There have been some gems on it, Becky Smile. I have sent my appreciation to the BBC and asked if he can do a series in the near future.

Some rarities in there,Eileen ...lovely programme and he played Jimmy Durante singing Make Someone Happy..he made me very happy playing that. Terry Wogan once answered a text/email I sent him about that song.

Unlike so many now who host Radio 2 programmes Barry really knows the music he is playing.

It made me laugh when he was about to play Georges Gueteray singing "I'll Build a Stairway to Paradise" and he said his producer told him to announce that the opening words are not "Ena Sharples" Very Happy . They were actually "Un Chanson" but could have been misheard.

He has such an easy way with him....he's a born broadcaster

His theme for last week's programme was echoed (optimistically?) in this sentence..

"I suppose one of the good things about growing older is that in tough times one knows things will ultimately improve, except for popular music ,of course." Very Happy

Lovely programme tonight. It was all about dance. His stories about being made to go to dancing classes by his mother were so funny.

I didn't hear it Eileen but Gillian Reynolds gave the programme a glowing report in today's S Times.

She's only in the Sunday Times these days as far as I know. Hard to believe that she is 82/3.

The latest one I've listened to was all about Down Under.

I do love listening to his pieces between the songs...a lot of them are deliciously irreverent. Laughing

Lovely song from John Denver

The hour was over,or so it seemed, before it began...I was enjoying it so much.

What a delightful final programme in this all too short series. There were some absolute gems, many of which I have never heard before. I have emailed Radio 2 again.

More gems from Barry. He played two Leslie Sarony songs. which was nice. I'd never heard of him, until Danny Baker played his stuff on his old Radio London show. Now, I have a few songs of his, but not (at that time) Gorgonzola, which Barry played early on.

Listening to Barry, made me realise how much Russell Davies is missed on R2. Both have lovely little snippets of info between records. And four one hour shows isn't enough!

Oh yes, Russell Davies! Now he was a truly superb broadcaster of popular music and his breadth of knowledge was formidable. I would love him to return to Radio 2.

Just read a letter in RT praising the show and in a response RT says 'Radio 2 have confirmed that there will be another series early next year'.
