as a new arrival i was perusing the membership list as you do. it seemed that almost the entire hall of fame from the messageboards had de-camped to here in utopia. however, those are our boards bought and paid for and we're giving in to those people without a fight. now i don't know about you but am not a quitter, stupid, slow, drug impaired, but not a quitter. i've read your posts people and i know that there are some upright thinking individuals out there what are your thoughts? _________________ from a foxhole somewhere in england |

Well, as a regular here but only a lurker and (very) occasional poster on the R2MB, I felt the latter was too regimented and policed for my tastes. Happily, I seem to have landed among a great bunch of people here, so I don't feel I'm missing out on too much. _________________ Author: “To the Ends of the Earth: A Snapshot of Aviation in North-Eastern Siberia, Summer 1992”

I occasionally post on the old boards, drop the odd hand grenade and watch the sparks fly. _________________ Geddon

It was a shame to see the old S&M boards closed, I thought there was a great mixture of chat/comment and fun, sometimes it was quite hilarious - better than TV!.
Closing it down? well, on one hand I can understand it in view of the rediculous amount of presenter/schedule bashing from some trolls, particularly at weekends.
I personally didn't take too much offence from the postings aimed at some presenters but would bow to those who did.
On the other hand, surely the Mods could have curtailed the practice by banning the posters? or even just increased moderation as there seems to be now!! |

yeah, why the complete 'police state' rule of those boards now - they call this a democracy? what times are we living in for goodness sake - and you pay licence fee to be told you don't have the right to comment and so there is a white wash on their website? on yer bike!
(ok, ok, I'll take the chill pill this time)
btw thank you BGW |

Spangles Muldoon.... now there's a name I'd forgotton about...
Google..
Spangles Muldoon (sometimes spelt Maldoon) Born in Chester on 5th October 5th 1946, his real name is Chris Cary. He joined Caroline South just as the Marine Offences Act took effect on 14th August 1967. Previously an engineer, he was initially responsible for playing non-stop music through the night and, during this period, he was known as Chris Anthony. Once he had mastered the studio, he started to make the occasional announcements, changed his name to Spangles Muldoon and then took over the noon-3pm show. It became known as the Lunchtime Loonabout (“with the goon, Muldoon”). |

Ah yes - "Lunchtime Loonabout" from the goodship Mi Amigo anchored 3 miles off Frinton.
Now THAT was radio (even if it was watery on occasions!). Forget about all this Radio 2 rubbish! Chris Evans? Wossy? Original? Rubbish!

Agree 110% with that Ella. Definitely a magic phase in my lifetime..
I mentioned before on a thread that I liked to listen to the "Weird Beard" who I think was on Caroline. He would tell a ghost story late at night, and from what I remember, they were pretty good too!! |

I remember hearing Big L station manager Tony Windsor saying that a DJ should never decide on the next record until the current one is playing - that way the DJ can judge the mood and keep the pace moving, thus keeping everything fresh and unpredictable. How right he was - and how fab Radio London was!
Just like the current Radio 2 and all these inventive and risk-taking London stations like Smooth!
Not.

I loved to listen to Caroline, almost from day 1 on 199 metres! but I must admit, London had more sparkle and maybe better jingles too. But they were both fantastic and of course OUR radio! |

sorry to interrupt your reminising, I was just going to ask a wee question...
I was having a peek at the beeb boards and they posted a link to a discussion on this site - and then they started having a little bitch about 'oh, so that's where all those trolls went to'
isn't that a bit unfair? - I think we're getting on fine over here - and anyway you can't say anything over there without being silenced (I can't think of the english word for the bit if cloth hostages get tied round their mouth to silence them - would have made a better metaphor - nevermind)
It isn't like it used to be over there with constant threads yelling 'sign petition to get SK off the air' - yes, some of us here might not like her but we have more, what I like to think, mature ways of expressing our opinion
that was a bit of a rant, wasn't it! _________________ I was trying to daydream, but my mind kept wandering. |

That's as maybe, but only as long as it was a record within the rigid station playlist (Fab Forty and new releases, some of which it has been suggested may have had more than a whiff of payola about them, and a few oldies).
I loved Radio London too (can't do emoticon for Tony's deep voice - Hell-o!) but am under no illusions as to their music policy, which was no more free than R2's. _________________ Ron |

Didn't Tony Windsor end up as a filing clerk in the NHS when the radio work dried up? Or am I thinking of someone else....there were a lot of Tonys at the time!
I seem to recall the aforementions Spangles Muldoon did a bit of time at Her Majesty's......in court it was revealed his personalised numberplate was THE 60S, which really amused me for some reason. _________________ "....you're wearing a plywood bow tie with Dundee United on it?" |

I used to really enjoy the R2 MBs ... but the changes have made it near impossible to have any fun at all. Logging on there is like getting your first straight-jacket.....at first.... you're thinking .. oh this isn't so bad.... it's warm, I can still breathe, I can write with my teeth ........ then........ having spent weeks scratching out a coded message in the flaking paintwork with a blunt spoon between your teeth, along comes the moderator with a bucket of whitewash........
As my Great Grandma used to say to me .... ... "as soon as the fun ends....... the Gingerbread man flies out the window."......... |

Geddon.
I don't think my Great Gran would have read that .. Sounds like an interesting read though. She died a lifetime ago.... in the 70s....... , having gone over the conversations in my head from the many times she used that phrase, I think she was referring to people in general... but I can't be sure .... she used lots of odd expressions that to this day leave me thinking... what did she mean?...
The thicker the meat the stronger the woman............ she said that just before spooning, Black Treacle and Brimstone down my throat.........
You can't knock a Psychopath's commitment .. ... My Great Gran never said that... |

I got modded for quoting from 'The Italian Job' ( the bit about the doors). The editors pencils are getting a lot of use on the other boards. _________________ Geddon

Just noticed that "The Bull Upstairs", which is where quite a few of the former Coffee Bar posters went, has had a purge http://www.bbc.co.uk/dna/mbarchers/F2693945?thread=4113621
so that it's now "word games and Archers spoilers only".
They've had to pack their bags again, and have gone to Points Aspew. _________________ Ron |
