|
|
A major international conference looking at the role of the comic in society is to be staged in Dundee.
The city is home to comics giant DC Thomson, with titles including The Dandy and Oor Wullie. [and the Beano]
The event is being held at the University of Dundee as part of the Scotland-wide Six Cities Design Festival on 25 and 26 of May.
This year marks the 70th anniversary of The Dandy, widely recognised as the world's longest running comic.
Event organisers believe the continued popularity of comic greats, including Spiderman, Superman and Dare Devil at the box office in recent years is a testament to their influence on our culture.

I do love Spider-Man, followed by Daredevil and Batman. The Captain America comics have been great lately too.
I occasionally read the Beano and it's still good fun. |

The Eagle, loved Dan Dare & hated the evil Meekon; also they used to do cutaway drawings of cars and planes etc. I used to marvel at the aircraft drawings and still have some in a scrap book in the attic. I guess that's what started my interest in aircraft engineering and ended up being an avionics technician, in the RAF, for 23 years.

The Eagle was my favourite as well; the aircraft drawings stimulated my interest as a spotter (in my teenage years - long-since lapsed) rather than as an engineer or designer though.
Actually favourite is pushing it a bit, it was the only one I was allowed, since the Beano and Dandy were considered too trashy and subversive . The Broons and Oor Wullie annuals were regulars at Christmas, though. _________________ Ron |

2000ad has celebrated it's 30th anniversary this year also with fab characters!
In my old school, way back when - there was a comic corner for those who wouldn't read books - this was used as an intro to books - at least they're reading something approach.
not much of a marvel fan, more DC.
Still read the odd 'Commando' every now and then 'Achtung, Englander!!' _________________ Some say he once threw a microwave oven at a tramp and that all his potted plants are called 'Steve'.....all we know is, he's called 'The Stig!'. |

Our Wullie was the most subversive of the lot - the original hoodie! _________________ Over the hill they came....the greatest Army in the World.....The Tartan Army |

Snap - used to read 2000AD when it first came out, and had 100s of Commando comics when I was young but sold them all as a job lot years ago. "Warlord" and "The Victor" were my regular comics during the mid-1970s, but by 1977 or so I'd moved onto SF novels and never went back. _________________ Author: “To the Ends of the Earth: A Snapshot of Aviation in North-Eastern Siberia, Summer 1992”

Did you never read the Eagle Cherskiy, the cut away drawings were the first picture I ever saw of the F-104 "widow maker", what a machine to a young lad of 12. It looked so futuristic in comparison to the Hunter and Super Sabre, and Mach 2.2, wow, wicked.

Very rarely read British comics when I was a kid, just second hand ones from my mates.
I always had the early Superman, Detective, Batman, Spiderman, Wonder Woman etc plus loads of Sci fi mags such as Forbidden Worlds, Startling Stories, Amazing Stories and other super comics.
I do remember those cut away drawings though BB, really interesting stuff to a sixties kid! |

Can't even remember the Eagle being out when I was a lad, BB - my newsagent certainly didn't stock it. _________________ Author: “To the Ends of the Earth: A Snapshot of Aviation in North-Eastern Siberia, Summer 1992”

I still read all those - though God knows why I bother with Wonder Woman, it's rubbish! |

For DCD fans - 52 is almost over, countdown to come - oooohh!!
Eagle was before my time but I've collected the Dan Dare hardback collections and enjoyed them all!
This is classis Sci-Fi from the 50's - people living on Venus, Airforce type uniforms for spacemen - brilliant!
If you love 50's ci-fi - this is for you. _________________ Some say he once threw a microwave oven at a tramp and that all his potted plants are called 'Steve'.....all we know is, he's called 'The Stig!'. |

Used to like Spider-Man, The Avengers and Iron Man from the Marvel stable.
Really got into 2 obscure titles called "Nemesis" and "Rogue Trooper"
Think they may have had something to do with the 2000AD group.
