YIPPEE! Brilliant news!
For those who are not registered with media Guardian, here is the part of the article which is relevant.
Also mentions John Humphrys signing a new contract too.
Terry Wogan and John Humphrys will be rousing the nation from its slumber for another two years after signing new contracts.
The DJs that wake more than 14 million radio listeners each morning have signed up with the BBC until 2009, MediaGuardian.co.uk can reveal.
A double winner at last night's Sony Radio Academy Awards, Humphrys has repeatedly hinted that he would step down from Radio 4's Today programme at the end of his current contract.
However, the combative presenter has now agreed to stay on for another two years.
He told MediaGuardian.co.uk that the new contract "will definitely be my last. But I have said that for the last four contracts".
Wogan is another BBC veteran whose imminent retirement - or otherwise - is a constant source of speculation but listeners to the Radio 2 breakfast show will have him for another two years at least.
"I have signed a new contract until 2009," he told MediaGuardian.co.uk. "And if I am spared, I will continue until hell freezes over."
Wogan will be 70 next year and Humphrys 65. The Radio 2 breakfast show is the most popular in the UK with nearly 8 million listeners a week. The Today programme is the most popular news programme, with 6.2 million people tuning in every week in the final quarter of last year. |

Whilst I am sure that Chrass Evans will end up in the breakfast chair I think it will signify the end of the station as we know it. I really do not want to be woken up by his annoying voice and stupid, patronising, delivery style - even if there are loads of other easily-pleased fools who do! |

Well it dosen't matter for another 2 years does it? at least this will put an end to the speculation for 1 year and 11 months
Terry is on good form lately and he's gelling better with Lynn.
Just goes to show he's far from past it. |

Well, I'm pleased that El Presidente is continuing for another couple of years.
I can't ever envisage CE doing the breakfast slot, though - I suspect he'll take over SW's show if it ever comes to a move. _________________ Author: “To the Ends of the Earth: A Snapshot of Aviation in North-Eastern Siberia, Summer 1992”

I disagree. This is what is called sucession planning in the business world. Nothing may be signed, but its clear what the intent is. _________________ His name was ernie ........ and he drove the fastest milk cart in the west..... |

Quoting the Togmeister from the initial post
"I have signed a new contract until 2009," he told MediaGuardian.co.uk. "And if I am spared, I will continue until hell freezes over."
Personally, I'll take Terry untilhell freezes over, because it will have to be sub-zero farenheit in hades before I listen to the ginger whinger at breakfast. _________________ Geddon

It can be as imminent as it likes as long as it happens a long time from now.

Mmm, yeah, good for him I guess, but it does make a mockery of this stations relentless, mainly youth-orientated evolution; Having a 72 year old host their flagship show, oh, and still using ten year-old News and Travel jingles!?! _________________ Who Can Take A Sunrise, Sprinkle It With Dew... |

I don't see what his age has to to with anything, he still does a good job and Lesley Douglas knows it, she would be daft to get rid of him while he's still on top form. |

Yes, we have 'succession planning' in our office - it usually consists of finding people who have no idea how to do a job being allowed to tell other people how to do theirs.
I still can't see CE doing the breakfast slot, and I can't see clear intent that he is being lined up for it. YMMV. _________________ Author: “To the Ends of the Earth: A Snapshot of Aviation in North-Eastern Siberia, Summer 1992”

Ditto JY ... but they chose to sack him in the name of evolution, so where does that leave the argument I wonder?
Hmm...
It's this age contrariness I have a problem with at R2.
JY was 'too old' , but Wogan is somehow ok?
I'll re-instate my bring back Gerald Harper and Michael Aspel campaigns then if they're saying it's ok to have a 72 year-old breakfast show host in 2009! _________________ Who Can Take A Sunrise, Sprinkle It With Dew... |

No, no.. The person who is taken over from Wogan isn't ready yet from another network.
It says for another two years, " at least" so he could go at anytime, if all being well with his health it will be two.

JY was 82 when he went, Wogan has an awful long way to go before he's that age!

Yes, but when you consider anyone over the age of about 30 is now considered eligible for pensioning off by an evolution hungry R2 these days, Wogan is pretty near the top of the list! _________________ Who Can Take A Sunrise, Sprinkle It With Dew... |

I think that JY used to play the same record twice in a row without realising it didn't help his cause!
And as Radio 2 has just started a new show with two over 40s (one of which has just won a Sony Gold and one a Silver) in the last couple of weeks I think shows that age isn't that much of an issue at the station.

Sarah Kennedy is 57 Ken Bruce is 56 Brian D'Arcy is 62, The theres Parky, Titchmarsh, Johnnie Walker, Gambo, etc who are all in or near their 60's. This suggests age is not an issue. |

I personally think Terry isn't ready to go as he enjoys himself, and I suppose he will get every other month off? Also I think there isn't anyone else to take over, or even wants too? Evans I very much doubt it, Unless dame Lesley is going to restructure the whole daytime schedule in two years? |

I don't think LD will be there in two years, which is why she's renewed Wogan's contract for that length. Who would want the task of trying to replace him?! Long as she signs her hero, one D. Baker of Blackheath before she goes, I don't much care what happens to the station! _________________ Who Can Take A Sunrise, Sprinkle It With Dew... |

Y'know, over the past few months we've been speculating about who would replace el Tel - Mr. Allinson, Mr. Evans...sorry, MR. EVANS!!! but I'm real glad Terry is staying at least for another 2 years.
I'm raising my glass to you, Terry. thanks for another two years. Now, let's stop speculating who will follow....at least for 18 months. Heck, Evans may be gone by then - 5 day's a week is a bit of a strain, I'm not sure he can keep on shouting for another 5 years! _________________ Some say he once threw a microwave oven at a tramp and that all his potted plants are called 'Steve'.....all we know is, he's called 'The Stig!'. |

I still think Wogan is too old to carry on hosting this flagship show on the BBC.
He's been presenting the same format for over 20 years-I'm sure he is happy to continue but are not the listening audience somewhat totally bored with it all.The show needs a complete makeover/a new presenter.
Bring on Chris Evans I say-it's gonna happen whether we like it or not. |

Lesley Douglas has been very clever in announcing Terry is signed up for 2 more years.
This simply confirms that the countdown to Wogan's departure has now begun. |

It wasn't Lesley, it's Terry who signs the contract.

How so? I don't think it does anything of the kind.
The listening audience is not 'totally bored' with it as you so delicatley put it, you might be yes but 8 million others are not. Terry went through a rather lean spell at the begining of the year for a varitey of reasons but seems to be very much back on top form now.

At least two more years of the Togmeister is fine by me, especially as he seems to have got through the winter blues, the loss of Pauly, Boggy retiring, and the controller trying to ruin the format of his show.
There's now a rapport with Lynn, and she has been accepted, judging by the mild abuse and banter from the TOGS. _________________ Geddon

BGW. - Well said Sir!
And if Global Warming carries on at its' present rate, hell may well NOT freeze over!!!
I'm pleased to hear that Terry has signed on for at least another 2 years. It's a positive note after a tough few months in his radio life, but with the increasing interaction by Lynn Bowles, Charles Nove and so on, the one time standards of light hearted banter and listener participation, has re-emerged. Long may STW rule. |

Hi
New to these boards, but just wanted to add my view on the news that STW will be staying another two years. Great!
I don't know where I would be without him in the morning (except for a few minutes around 9.15, when I have to switch over). It never ceases to amaze me how many people are chuckling away in the traffic jams at exactly the same time as me, or I'm afraid, singing at the tops of their voices when Chuck Berry or Jerry Lee Lewis rock on. |
