Ministers have confirmed the NHS has balanced its books - although many hospitals and other parts of the service are still struggling with debt.
Health Secretary Patricia Hewitt staked her job on wiping out the debt from previous years during 2006-07, and the figures show a surplus of £510m.

I didn't realise it was a business to balance the books and health care to be put to the back.
It's disgraceful. Hewitt needs to go ASAP.. |

Of course they've balanced the books. Patricia Hewitt wouldn't have staked her job on this if there had been any chance of it not happening.
But at what cost for the service has this been done?

I don't really understand what that means.

Why is it "disgraceful"? |

Seems plain to me. Mark was complaining that balancing the books should not be prioritised over providing health care. I dont agree with his opinion, but it seems a perfectly reasonable opinion to have. _________________ His name was ernie ........ and he drove the fastest milk cart in the west..... |

The trouble is that someone has got to do the unglamorous job of balancing the books. If it's done well and humanely, it can contribute greatly to patient care in its own way.
