Would just mention that the excellent Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons have just released a new album called not surprisingly "Beggin".
It was released on Monday 23rd July-have bought a copy and would advise its briliant-it contains many of their previous big hits.
Musical excellent at its best. |

Another marketing coup!
They delete all the old Frankie Valli & Four Seasons Best ofs that have been sitting on the shelves for a fiver or less, remix a couple of the hits and release this "new" one, containing a measly 14 tracks, at full price.

Clearly you are a half pint empty man as opposed to a half pint full chap.
Still the "new" album is great. |

I prefer my pints to be as full as possible. This new compilation resembles those glasses of lager they serve you in Continental cafes - three-quarters full with a load of froth on the top. _________________ Ron |

I have to say I do like Shirley Bassey's version of Pull Up To The Bumper-the old Grace Jones song.
Anyone bought the Dame's current album-if so is it good/worth buying? |

I do have Shirl's new album.
The three best tracks are the two singles, The Living Tree and Pink's Get This Party Started (which are the only new recordings) and the remix of Slave To The Rhythm. Get This Party is deliciously OTT, Shirley's vocal is as powerful as you could wish for; can really be 70? The remix of Slave is jungle-hot and sweaty and the song is right up Shirley's street.
The rest of the album is less successful. They are all remixes of recordings of varying age, though not necessarily the original ones. Big Spender is given a ponderous pop beat, I (Who Have Nothing) a quasi-Dub reggae one, and What Now My Love a coffee-bean latin one with a heavy bass. The vocals are pushed back in the mix (yes, I know that's the point of a remix) but in doing so the power and impact of the songs is lost. On Kiss Me Honey Honey and You Only Live Twice she sounds as if she's singing in the bathroom.
This Is My Life is given an atmospheric outer-space arrangement and is OK, but not even her voice and a heavy jazz-funk beat can rescue the awful Michael Bolton song Can I Touch You There. Where Is The Love and Gloria Gaynor's I Will Survive sound as if they've been tagged on to the end as make-weights, and Hello - well it's just not a Dame Shirley Bassey type song.
Think I've covered everything. Like a lot of these new-remix, crossover, mixed-genre projects, it must have sounded a terrific idea, and it is good for 15 minutes or so, but a whole album needed more freshly recorded material to make it really great. _________________ Ron |

I've just realised, having written all that, that Pull Up To The Bumper isn't on it!!
Doesn't appear to be on any of her other albums that I can find either. _________________ Ron |
