|

In my opinion the answer is yes.
The bulletins on the hour every hour starting at 6am are often 5 minutes long and then we have a mini bulletin on the half hour.
Why so much news on Radio 2. Other stations have much shorter news bulletins.
Indeed if I wanted to hear in depth news I would switch to Radio 4.
What do others think. |

Well, Mark, if I wanted to listen to in-depth news, like you I'd also retune to R4.
However, that's just it - the R2 bulletins aren't exactly in-depth, the five minute long bulletins on the hour barely have time for a three-line sentence from a reporter about the top story, so it's just long enough to put across the salient points - the round-up on the half-hour is more or less just a list of headlines with practically no comment.
I'm happy the way things are - in the morning, when people are waking and tuning in at various times, the station has to accommodate listeners and presumably give them at least the news headlines within 30 minutes. I'm fortunate that I catch the 0600 bulletin, but if I have a car pass for work, I get up twenty minutes later - if it wasn't for the half-hour slot, I wouldn't hear the news before I got to work (and therefore until I left again). _________________ Author: “To the Ends of the Earth: A Snapshot of Aviation in North-Eastern Siberia, Summer 1992”

my sentiments exactly cher, not everyone listens to R2 all day and news can change very quickly these days what with pigeon post and tickertape machines to keep us up todate _________________ "Timpani!, Timpani!, They've all got it Timpani!"- All drummers know the pain of skin trouble. |

Radio 2 bulletins are the best comedy on radio. Today we have a report of a lady asking Gordon Brown a question about Iraq, but they havent bothered to tell us how he answered in response. I had to retune to Radio 4 to find that out. _________________ His name was ernie ........ and he drove the fastest milk cart in the west..... |

Steve Wright has news every 10 minutes. There are no news bulletins between 7-10pm on Friday night, yet the insist on having them every hour on Saturday & Sunday night. Why? _________________ His name was ernie ........ and he drove the fastest milk cart in the west..... |

The only news I hear SW giving out are headlines from provincial newspapers.... clearly (and thankfully) I don't listen to enough of the show to hear anything else! _________________ Author: “To the Ends of the Earth: A Snapshot of Aviation in North-Eastern Siberia, Summer 1992”

BBC Local Radio seem to have more bulletins, and they do News, Sport and Weather seperatley. The 1pm news seems to be the main news of the day, often taking up to 10 minutes! _________________ Fred Hart

The 5 minute news are at 6am, 8am and 1pm and 6pm. Not all people have computers like we do to catch up with the news. Some people are blind too who can't watch the news on TV and like listening to the news on the radio. News on the radio was the only source in world war one and two so it goes back years.
Mark M do you want to revamp the whole station with your ideas and make it into a commercial radio network? |

There is not much "new" in the news bulletins. _________________ His name was ernie ........ and he drove the fastest milk cart in the west..... |

I hate this "grabbit & run" tabloid style of news reporting on mainstream BBC media channels. And I hate the way story editors insist on chopping the shortest bite of an interview response even though it's obvious the interviewee had something pertinent to say. I think that when then there's less to report there should be less bulletins - otherwise the news team is just making it obvious that they're filling on a slow news day.
Terry Wogan is tops at poking fun at Dedly & co. when they read silly news stories on slow news days. Good for him. Still, it's part of today's culture. And what, after all, is news if it isn't somebody else's view of events? |
