So there I was enjoying the sun when a there was a knock at my door. I hate being disturbed on a Saturday but she looked a nice old lady with a bumbag so I opened the door. As soon as I saw the RAJAR form, she was through the door with a cup of coffee in her hands....did I have things to tell her!!
Turns out she wasn't interested, hadn't even heard of Richard Allinson, never mind BFBS......the word 'philistine' was teetering on the edge of my lips and I began eyeing her coffee!
So she asked where I listened to the radio and which stations (BBC Oxford, BFBS and York weren't on her list...."Have you never heard of Mr. Allinson, old lady?!!"
Anyway, I've got this huge book that looks like an old pools coupon from the seventies to fill in this week and my, how they want it completed, anyone got a phd?!!!
She did say my house was very nice so I forgave her for not knowing about Richard Allinson and offered to dry the coffee out of her hair.
She declined and left with a promise to send someone else next week for the book. All I can say is he bloody well have heard of Allinson! _________________ Some say he once threw a microwave oven at a tramp and that all his potted plants are called 'Steve'.....all we know is, he's called 'The Stig!'. |

Hi Andy,
I did one about 3 years ago and it is like the old pools coupon that my Grandpa used to do! If I recall there was a space to add other stations that weren't listed, so you could still mention RA.
Enjoy your week as an 'Official Listener'!

Do report on part 2 of the story.
Lets hope the next door knocker to collect the completed forms has heard of Richard Allinson. |

I was only vaguely aware of him on Capital in the late 80's on early morning or late night shows. I was very surprised that he was signed by Radio 2 in 1996 as the whole Capital DJ imagine of Pat Sharp, Mick Brown, Chris Tarrant, etc seemed to be the opposite of what the BBC was trying to offer. Capital in the late 80's was very slick and professional (more so than Radio 1) but it was also very shallow. It was all about sharp jingle packages, hype and keeping everything very fast paced with short links and lots of back to back songs. _________________ His name was ernie ........ and he drove the fastest milk cart in the west..... |

I joined the BBC message boards because I had heard too much of him.
I am sure he is a nice bloke but at one stage whenever I switched on R2 on any Bank Holiday or when any DJ who went on holiday he was standing in. Every show became exactly the same routine. |

Not to be pedantic but............ if Allinson is covering for someone your tick will go towards THEIR listenership figures not Allinson. So Sarah Kennedy would be the beneficiary. _________________ His name was ernie ........ and he drove the fastest milk cart in the west..... |

Just keep on correcting me gFloyd. Guess I was just too exited being a part of this!!!
Still I guess if Beebsee the RAJAR figures show a high listnership during a RA cover show, it's got to mean something! _________________ Some say he once threw a microwave oven at a tramp and that all his potted plants are called 'Steve'.....all we know is, he's called 'The Stig!'. |

Dont despair you can still get his BFBS and local radio shows a vote.
Anyway, he's not covering for anyone on Radio 2 this week....we think. _________________ His name was ernie ........ and he drove the fastest milk cart in the west..... |

Send those Rajar boys around my house.
I'll make sure they know who Richard Allinson is-indeed I'm confident I could convert them into big fans if they weren't already.
Bring them on.
Allinson rocks. |

So when Richard Covered for Sarah, Terry, ken and Steve the listeners figures were still high, but he never gets the credit because it's not his shows. So if some people mention Richard to a Rajar rep of course they never heard of him as he's not that high profile. Personally he probarly dosn't want to be. |

Surely the daytime listeners, at work, housewives, in the main don't really bother who's presenting these dumbed-down shows that pass for early and daytime Radio 2? That's why Richard still gets the listener numbers, it's why SK still gets the listeners despite her numerous failings, it's why KB and SW still get the listeners despite the repetitive playlists and repetitive presentation styles.

In the short term yes I would agree. But over the longer term listeners would drift away from a presenter they didnt like. _________________ His name was ernie ........ and he drove the fastest milk cart in the west..... |

Oh yes....
If it wasn't for Evans, I wouldn't have found Planet Rock or The Jazz.
I listened to Planet Rock this morning and enjoyed it a lot, more so than Ken Bruce who I would normally listen to whilst working.
The problem's not with Ken, it's the boring music R2 is playing now... _________________ Johnnie Walker read out my message on Pirate Radio! 13/8/07

Ok, so my week as a RAJAR person is over. It's funny, a while a go I was saying there's nothing much to listen to anymore. However, a month ago, I was travelling down to Bristol in the evening and had radio 2 on and I must say I really enjoyed Sturat Marconi (was when radders wasn't there) and so have been listening for a while.
So great, I've bigged up radio 2 of course but also but stuff down for 6 music - Bolan at the bbbc, great archive material. This type of show is about the only thing I listen to on 6, they also did a Doors special a while back.
BFBS got a mention for every day (do I need to mention why....?) Classic FM got some mention and also BBC4 and BBC7. But gladly, I found R2 getting most of the praise.
Incidentally, there isn't any way of recording what I heard using the 'listen again' feature. I will mention this to the chap when he comes to collect my form. _________________ Some say he once threw a microwave oven at a tramp and that all his potted plants are called 'Steve'.....all we know is, he's called 'The Stig!'. |
