|
|
Some of the highest-paid personalities on television could have their salaries cut as part of the BBC's drive to save money over the next six years, reports Nicole Martin, Digital and Media Correspondent.
The corporation is said to be considering a reduction in the wages of its top on-screen talent, including Jonathan Ross, who last June struck an unprecedented three-year deal worth £18 million.
Other celebrities who could suffer under the cost-cutting measures include Graham Norton, whose package exceeds £2 million a year, and Jeremy Paxman, the Newsnight presenter who earns more than £1 million a year.

Apparently the BBC has to offer 18 million for Wossy due to 'fierce' competition from itv and ch4. I would say the bbc could certainly afford to reduce this huge amount. History has shown if you jump ship to itv, your career generally takes a nosedive. _________________ Some say he once threw a microwave oven at a tramp and that all his potted plants are called 'Steve'.....all we know is, he's called 'The Stig!'. |

I'am not surprised!!
Why do many people think the BBC are 'supposedly' whiter than white?
Anything i hear regarding the BBC seriously gets my goat up because look at the public's money they waste on 'Taxi's' /'hotel accomodation' etc... and other creature comforts paid for at the cost of the licence payer.
The licence fee goes up every year....the programming gets worse....and then they feel the need to rip-off genuine competition callers to rake in even more revenue as if the public aren't ripped off enough with the extortionate licence fees. |

But "television" is a different place now. Rossy has lots of other commitments with the been - radio, his Tv show, his film review show and other specialist documentary series. Whether you like him or not (and I'm indifferent) there's no doubt that he's an asset to a broadcaster because he can cover so much ground. And he's a "pull" which, for a commercial network, will attract sponsorship and other commercial tie-in deals (web, sell-through media deals, etc) which means that if you're a broadcaster who wants (or, in the case of ITV.plc, desperately needs) this then you have to come up with the money.
And that's where Ross's agent can start to negotiate in a big way. If somebody is willing to pay a big price, that's what he's worth. If they're not - he's not. It's simple market economics.

Look at this a white collar worker who justifys all this. So you think all big bosses who sit on their fat bums all day should earn millions? I think it's wrong. Not even Chris Tarrant earned that doing Capital Breakfast 5 days a week. |

Who is this white colour worker you speak of? I'm confused.
mark occomore wrote: | So you think all big bosses who sit on their fat bums all day should earn millions? |
What does that have to do with anything?
mark occomore wrote: | I think it's wrong. Not even Chris Tarrant earned that doing Capital Breakfast 5 days a week. |
But that's all that Tarrant was doing for Capital - 5 breakfast shows. He gets a helluva lot more than that for Millionaire. Jasper Carrott has done pretty well out of Millionaire as well!
It's simple - if you need something that bad, you pay for it. If you don't need it, you hold onto your money. |

He didn't do as much for G-Cap as Ross does for the BBC. And the stuff that Ross does for the BBC (TV) is sold overseas - like his cinema documentaries and stuff on comic book heroes. That makes BBC World a lot of dosh of which Ross has a cut - and that's all reflected in his contract fee. |

Does anyone seriously believe that Ross or Norton would get the same money from ITV or Channel 4?
Name the last broadcaster that left the BBC to join either because of money. I would suggest that you need to go back to Des Lynam in sports presenting. In the entertainment work probably its Morecame & Wise. _________________ His name was ernie ........ and he drove the fastest milk cart in the west..... |

Yes but the world of broadcasting is vastly different now. These days the market is worldwide. With satellite and all other media - not to mention rapidly developing IPTV options - there's a greater need to get the "pull" from people who can do lots of things.
I'm not saying that Ross deserves the fee, by the way, because I rarely listen/watch his shows, but the market is the market. Just like ebay! |

The market is a monopoly for guys like Ross though. They aren't going to go to Virgin 1 or Living or Sky One. These channels have a total budget equivalent to his salary. Until recently ITV was on its uppers as well.
And he cant conquer the US. They wouldn't understand what the hell he was talking about. _________________ His name was ernie ........ and he drove the fastest milk cart in the west..... |

Only while he gets highish ratings. As soon as they drop he'll see the fees reducing quick enough.

It still is. Advertising revenue is down and even sponsorship deals are thinning out as well. Grade has a lot of work cut out for himself.

On that I agree! And he'd be a small fish in a big pond, anyhow. |

I mean Ross will be the last straw for BBC and we wont see big named stars, or the BBC will be keeping tight lipped how much their stars receive? |

I don't see how it matters. If you're the Director of Television and/or Controller Radio 2 you have the job of making sure that the shows get their projected audience shares, and where programming is sold internationally (as the cinema and comic book documentary series are) then they have to recoup their expenditure and make a profit. All exec prods have this pressure on them now.
If you don't have the names to pull the audiences you can't do anything of the sort. Don't forget that a significant portion of the BBC's income is now derived from its commercial arm. |

Since the BBC is the biggest player in the market (especially in radio), they set the market rates in the 1st place! _________________ His name was ernie ........ and he drove the fastest milk cart in the west..... |

It made me laugh hearing that the Broadcasters who work for them and on mega bucks would still work there whatever they were earning.
Maybe the government needs to cut back a little more what they hand out each year? |

I'm not sure what on earth you mean by that, Mark. What has the Government to do with the negotiated fees being paid to top talent in the Beeb?
mark occomore wrote: | No the big wallet holders with in the BBC are judges. |
No. The "judges" are the BBC Trust. The report was carried out by economists Oliver & Ohlbaum Associates after having been commissioned as an independent report by the Trust.
