Whilst in Canada back in September, I took the opportunity to get Drive By Truckers A Blessing & A Curse and Tom Petty's Highway Companion Amongst others. Both stuff I'd heard on Bob Harris' show. And Johnnie Walker's too in the case of Tom Petty. |

Hmmm.... liked what I heard of the Drive-By Truckers that I heard on Bob Harris - is the rest of the album as good?

I think so, though if you read the lyric booklet that comes with the CD, they're not the happiest of songs! I find I'm playing 'Feb 14th' the most when I play it at the moment.

Re T. Rex - Electric Warrior.
I bought that album when it first came out only for it to get pushed to the back of my changing record collection. I had 'got into bands like Family, Tull, Floyd and Zeppelin, so T.Rex were seen as a bit of an embarresment amongst my peer group.
I recently bought it on CD, along with Beard of Stars, what blindingly good pieces of work they are.
It's nice to be able to listen to whatever you like, without considering the opinions of a peer group.

Victor,
I have posted a welcome thread for you. Good to see you.
I was very fond of some T-rex tracks when I was at school but it was not seen as cool for blokes to like Bolan and I never bought any of his albums. Maybe now, at 53, I can safely revisit Marc Bolan

John, thanks for the welcome.
It seems that even at our age (I'm a bit younger than you, 4 that we still cannot escape riducule by our peer group when admitting to a liking of the mystical, pixie-like one.

Victor,
The first person to recognise my latest avatar as a Gentle Giant LP cover art. Yes i used to borrow LP's of them from other students, have three or four albums on CD acquired recently. I think their music was exceptional, very inventive.

As a treat to myself I replaced all my Pink Floyd CD's/tapes with newer versions plus bought some albums of this fantastic group I did not already have in my collection. |

I missed GG when I was younger John, I was well into Curved Air (probably because they were better to look at) as well as the bands I mentioned earlier and Yes, Genesis (inc Gabriel only) ELP and all the other usual suspects.
I still listen to all that stuff but have also include bands I missed, like GG, Camel and Van der Graff.
Still prefer going back over than listening to some of the newer music.
This Xmas I was gifted the whole SAHB backcatalogue.

In my list too, what did you think?
I acquired Michelle Branch's two solo albums beforehand after hearing her on the Santana single - her first, "The Spirit Room", being a very mature and assured start for someone who was only 17 at the time - apparently she had a lot of input into the production (which can be a bad thing but wasn't in this case).
"Stand Still, Look Pretty" was a bit of a departure for here but stemmed from her friendship with Jessica Hart - and the duo definitely work, IMHO. _________________ Author: “To the Ends of the Earth: A Snapshot of Aviation in North-Eastern Siberia, Summer 1992”

I thought it a pretty good album. I havn't any Michelle Branch CDs, so i can't compare it.
I really like their current US single "My, Oh, My", but there are alot of good tracks on there. I had not heard them before a friend in the States sent me that CD. He also sent Carrie Underwood "Some Hearts"- that album- some weak songs, but she can really sing
Sara Evans new one. Not a hundred percent sold on this one. |

I love that album and one of these days I'll get the cd now that I have no turntable to play my old vinyl copy on ! It's remarkable the original version of We're All Alone on that album is far and away the finest working of the song IMO and it was never a hit. Another must have LP by Skaggs is 'Down two then left' .. happy days. |

The Wreckers have a great sound- very impressive. They are doing well in both the rock & country markets in the states. A fresh sound thast i think could fit neatly into almost any genre radio format |

Pity there's been very little airplay on R2 - apart from the title track which Bob Harris has played once or twice last year. Tracks like "Leave the Pieces", "Rain", "Lay Me Down" and "Way Back Home" would be well-received, I'm sure, on normal weekday listening - they're all very strong tracks. _________________ Author: “To the Ends of the Earth: A Snapshot of Aviation in North-Eastern Siberia, Summer 1992”

God, I feel SO boring after reading the lists on here! I only recognise one artist on Cherskiy's list!
I've bought Gwen Stefani, Cream reunion concert, Beatles Love album, Pink Floyd pulse, couple of Robin Trower albums for old time's sake and a collectors Frank Zappa boxed set....
Hardly keeping the music industry afloat am I? |

And that would be, I guess, K T Tunstall? I seem to be graviting towards female singer-songwriters as I've got older - started happening in a big way after I purchased Norah Jones' first album a few years ago - before that I was collecting all sorts of stuff. My Amazon wish list is terrifying - 335 albums long at the moment, with another 20 listed on Fish Records which aren't available through Amazon yet (or they haven't heard of them). Tracks from all the ones listed at the top of this thread, however, would be good on mainstream R2 programmes - all either alt-folk, alt-country or indie.

Nothing wrong with that lot (quite like Zappa's "City of Tiny Lights" and "Valley Girls" plus was almost tempted to buy Stefani's latest album last year (it would therefore be #336 on my list!) and want to obtain at least one Pink Floyd album in 2007)....
You're still buying music, that's the main thing. _________________ Author: “To the Ends of the Earth: A Snapshot of Aviation in North-Eastern Siberia, Summer 1992”

Didn't buy very much in 2006 but one that I got on ebay was the Best of the Fourmost--a 60s Liverpool group of much, not quite realised potential. There's hardly any dross in its 33 tracks.
Also bought Vol 5 of English String Miniatures--a collection of light music items, many of which aren't well known. A real snip at Naxos price. As is a collection of pieces by the South American composer Ramirez, also out on Naxos and giving a South American and African take on Christmas and Easter. There are one or two well-known pieces here, such as La Peregrinacion from the Christmas work and the Kyrie from Misa Criolla (Desmond Carrington has been known to play this) but the whole CD is a haunting collection just waiting to be discovered.
