No, Mark's right - 80s and 90s are quite regular on POTP now. Most welcome, I think.
I disagree with you John about most other stations playing 80s and 90s. That's certainly not the case in the North West, where I can only think of one FM station that actually plays a substantial amount of 80s music. |

Ian,
80s and 90s music seems to predominate in the BBC local stations in the midlands, also Heart, BRMB, Mercia, Touch with 00s music too.

Then things are very different there - my local BBC station plays the usual 70s stuff that Radio 2 does, while Smooth seems to have the same stuff. To be fair, Wish FM has a fair bit of 80s stuff but always the same songs as the day before, while Century seem to be playing slightly less and again it's all the usual suspects.
But I was listening to Steve Harley's Sounds of the Seventies last night, and thought: what's the point? Why does this show even exist? It only plays the same songs by the same bands I hear everywhere else, and for POTP to just play them again on a Sunday simply isn't providing anything different for the weekend at all. Especially when Johnny Walker plays them again straight after! |

Weekend local radio here in London and west Essex is fairly neutral. Essex FM has an 80s show every Sunday morning from 8.00 - 10.00am presented by weekday breakfast show jock Martin Day. The show is one of the most popular on the network. It used to be broadcast on Sunday mornings from 10.00am - 1.00pm until a few years ago when the new Essex FM boss axed the show and replaced with a general pop format. This move proved very unpopular with the listeners. A petition to have the show reinstated was drawn up and there were even protests staged outside Essex FM by disgruntled listeners.
Martin Day himself ranted several times during his breakfast shows that his 80s show had been axed. He also encouraged listeners to complain to the station bosses. The end result was the new Essex FM boss admitting defeat and reinstating the 80s show - but did not restore the show to its former slot. Instead it was given a graveyard Sunday slot (8.00 - 10.00am) which has become hugely popular with the 80s fans.
This proves that the voice of the listener can have some kind of impact on station bosses. The new Essex FM boss, at the time, underestimated the popularity of Martin Day's 80s show (and also failed to take account the fact that Martin Day is the station's most popular presenter). The 80s show , aside from Martin's weekday breakfast show, is one of the most listened to shows on Essex FM.
Most other stations such as Capital FM, XFM, Kiss 100, Heart 106.2, Virgin 105.8, and many more, offer the usual general pop format. Kiss used to have an old school dance music show on Sunday evenings called Kisstory hosted by Streetboy. It was much better than Dance Anthems on Radio 1 because Kisstory used to delve into dance music dating back to the late 80s through to the early 00s. Mind you, he often played Soul 2 Soul "Back to Reality" (big hit in 1989) almost every week!
Now, getting back to Martin Day's 80s show in Essex FM is a similar scenario with Ed Stewart on Radio 2. Lesley Douglas has seriously underestimated Stewpot's popularity. John, you keep on telling us that Radio 2 should offer "something different" at the weekends - well, that's what Stewpot did. Junior Choice Hour as part of his new Sunday show would be offering something different.
Far too many listeners have criticised Lesley Douglas and accused her of disenfranchising older listeners. Far too many familiar voices have disappeared from the network under Lesley Douglas' reign, so the return of Stewpot would be welcomed for many. He's not a loudmouth celebrity, he doesn't patronise, he doesn't massage his ego and he doesn't like the sound of his own voice. Yes, I got it wrong about Ed Stewart and realised that soon after his axing. It's a case that some of us should be careful what we wish for.
I'm sure a lot of listeners would appreciate tuning into Ed Stewart on a Sunday morning rather than the smug, patronising, egotistic, idiotic, stuck-in-1985 Steve Wright. |

Scott,
Don't put words in my mouth, I've nothing against Ed Stewart, he is a legend; I said that I'm no longer keen to hear Rolf Harris, Benny Hill, Clive Dunn and the Seekers.

Ed Stewart used feature those on his old Sunday show. It was quite embarrassing hearing The Laughing Policeman played, though.
Anyway, you once said that Pick of the Pops should replace Stewpot. I remember you saying that you used to switch Radio 2 off at 5pm on a Sunday after Lulu then you would switch back on again at 7pm for Sheridan Morley.
Be honest now, John. You don't like Ed Stewart very much, do you? |

Eh?

John,
They have mostly featured those years with either the 60's or 70's years which is heard in the first hour, then another year which is mostly 80's or 90's? Probably change again. |

How about Century in the North West? I think Radio 2 are trying to keep up with likes of Smooth Radio across the UK, who dig out music which we don't hear on Radio 2. I suppose you can't please everyone now as there is so many to choose from? |

Scott, I like Ed but not the novelty items he often plays, though Laughing Policeman is a favourite, the backing is by Stan Greening's band with some good comic waa-waa trumpet work in it from Frank Biffo - you won't get asked that in a pub quiz |

As I said above, Century do play 80s, 90s and now but there seems to be less 80s since the new management started, and what there is tends to be the same stuff over and over.
As for Smooth - I think you have it the wrong way round: they're desperate to keep up with Radio 2. I have yet to tune in and hear anything I've not heard on R2 in the last month. |

Yes Century FM in the NE play 80s and 90s too (with a special show called 'Skooldaze' on Friday nights that concentrates on 80s - cracking stuff. Have had a few requests played on that over the years.) _________________ Author: “To the Ends of the Earth: A Snapshot of Aviation in North-Eastern Siberia, Summer 1992”

Send the CD to Russell Davies. He might play it one night when John tunes in just to piss him off! |

Scott,
I have to be honest and say it's been very tedious having the usual pointless stuff regurgitated by you, but now we've got that out of the way (yippee) I look forward to some stimulating new discussion about the shows on Radio 2 that you DO listen to or music that you DO listen to |

I do listen to Pick of the Pops but only when the 80s and 90s are in the spotlight. I have e-mailed Pick of the Pops twice now and complained about the 60s and 70s being given too much emphasis. I received an e-mail back and was told that 2008 will focus more on the 80s and 90s by popular demand.
It appears Radio 2 is obsessed with the 60s and 70s. Pick of the Pops is supposed to reflect the music from the last 40 years and not the same old rubbish from the 60s and 70s each week. Thank goodness this is coming to an end.
This is one of the problems broadcasting Pick of the Pops on Sundays. Whenever the show features the 80s and 90s the Sunday listeners complain, yet when the show continuously gives the 60s and 70s priority it pisses off those who want more variety. In my opinion the show should never have been moved from Saturday afternoons. |

I'm sorry but I cannot see Ed Stewart coming back full time..Leslley Douglas would have to admit she got it wrong firing him in the first place and I'm betting shes too vain to do that. |
