When will they announce a full time replacement for the Parky show.

I wonder if Fiona Bruce will be good in this slot.

I heard it was to be Michael Ball - from Sarah Kennedy on her 'showbiz news slot' last week.

I would be surprised if he could commit to every Sunday live, as his other job must keep him pretty busy.

I don't know anything for sure, cast iron, 100% but it's certainly looking a possibility. Michael Ball has extended his contract in 'Hairspray' until October 2008 but from the end of April when the new contract starts he will not performing on Monday evenings. This was something he did when he extended his Chitty Chitty Bang Bang to, which meant he could stay with the show and fulfill other commitments.

Interesting choice. I can't see the music will change. Michael Ball was good covering Johnnie Walker and other shows on the network. I don't know what he's like as a interviewer for the paper review. It looks like the show will stay as the same format, which Parky wanted.

Oh well that's another Radio 2 show I won't be listening to. Sorry but I've never been able to stand the guy. It'll be 2 'luvvies' in a row then.

Just as well it's coming up to summer when I listen less to radio anyway.

MB has been on radio two on and off since 1991, interviewing people from all different areas of the business and members of the public imo he did very well sitting in for Johnnie Walker and Parkinson over the last couple of years. The theatre aspect of his career is just one of many. I don't think this show will be anything like Elaines, either in content or presentation, so I wouldn't dismiss him out of hand, as just another luvvie on parade. As can be seen from my avatar, I am already a fan of Michael Balls work. So I am obviously very happy with this news and will be listening. Very Happy

So all the speculations Johnnie Walker was going to swap his show and Ed Stewart was coming back didn't materialise. Even Richard Allinson wasn't taken out of the Radio 2 retirement home to get a full-time show back.

Count me out from the former Parky show then too. Either Clive Anderson or Eammon Holmes would have kept me listening. I think I'll buy a dog and take him for a walk at that time on a Sunday morning instead. 'Parky! Parky! Good boy!' Laughing

I've no doubt that Michael Ball can present a show well enough if that is what you like, I don't and never have. Cast your mind back to when he sat in for Johnnie Walker a year or so ago. Most of his guests were from a theatrical ilk and for me boring.

Of course it's 2 luvvies together - they are both from the theatre and sorry but I can't stand either of them.

Did you honestly think that was going to happen? It all came from the POV board which, sadly since the arrival of a certain person(s), has become a total joke.

It's hardly even worth looking at these days.

I have noticed that and it's turning into a Radio 2 MB not a POV Board talking about all Radio.

It suddenly dawned on me that you were talking about Elaine Paige & not Steve Wright as the other luvvie. Embarassed

I wouldn't have said theatrical myself with the exception of Petula Clark. more 2 pop singers, a cook, a comedian and Meatloaf (sounds like a dodgy film) Very Happy but Surely that depends on whoever is booked to be on a particular show on a particular week.

Casting my mind back I also remember a very interesting interview with Howard Jacobson when he was in promoting his book Kalooki nights. Last time MB sat in for Parkinson.

Their shows may be side by side in the running order but it remains to be seen if they are similar.

I seem to have spoken out of turn. I don't post much here, although I read everyday, perhaps I'm not around enough to warrant sharing an opinion.

Heloise, I echo what Briant has just said. Please do continue to give your fourpennyworth. (I don't know what it is about this board. It is usually far more civilised than most that you see out there on the web but we seem to have the unhappy knack of upsetting some people, though, to be fair, H did make it clear it was just her personal opinion)

Any road up, let us not jump to any hasty conclusions here. A lot will depend upon who is to produce the show, its format, and how much input Michael will have to its content, both musically and interviewees.

There were many people (not I) who weren't terribly happy with Parkinson towards the end, especially the music that was played, biased as it was towards the 40s/50s big band and jazz era and the "young pretenders" who emulate it. Michael Ball is 27 years younger than his illustrious predecessor and I think it inevitable that there will be changes but let's wait and see, and not prejudge him on his odd stints filling in for various and disparate people in the past.

Well the music is supposed to be quite mellow isnt it ? It doesnt all have to be jazzy or crooners but that would certainly be the bedrock of the show.

Heloise,

As everyone else has said your opinion is as valid as everyone else's.

It was my personal opinion of Michael Ball and I'm sorry if my not liking him has upset you.

It would however have been nice just for once if Lesley Douglas could have appointed someone who's trade first and foremost was either a radio personality or journalist for this slot.

I never said you not liking him had upset me. I don't expect everyone to appreciate the same people I do ... Apologises if I misinterpreted your reply.

Briant, RockitRon, gfloyd Thank you Very Happy

That's all I was trying to say Smile

I bet back in 1991 when MB first covered for David Jacobs afternoon show for the week. He never suspected he's end with his own regular gig. lol

The only area where I would be a bit unsure of Ball's abilities would be to do with the current affairs/ paper review section at the start. Thats where journalistic experience would help.

Having said that Parky tended to talk cricket all the time, whilst Eamonn talks about Man Utd too much, so the real question is which team does Michael Ball support? And no double entendes please Mr Robinson Wink

I don't think Michael Ball will have to much problem with the newspaper reviews/current affairs side of things. He has had some experience of this already having sat in for Parky before and The Greenroom has similar aspects to it's format. In the past few years he's also presented 'This Morning' which handles all sorts of topics within one show. I could be wrong, we'll find out for sure on the 6th Smile

ehmmm, not to much football talk, if anything more likely to be rugby.
