OK, a couple of the British country MBs seem to be going knees up, I thought i'd start a country music thread here & see how it sails
Discuss anything about country- whether the superb new CD by Dolly Parton "Backwoods Barbie", Toby Keith or Faith Hill- or Kinky Friedman.
I would post some comments but it has been a very long day & i'm exhausted
Just wanted to get the country thread started |

Yes Clive, those two Country websites have vanished into the ether. I think 'Talk Country' was the better of the two. The 'Redneck' one was dominated by two aggessive posters- one a Toby Keith fan and the other a Steve Earle fan. Opposite ends of the spectrum!
I've just bought a Gene Watson album and I am waiting for a Ricky Skaggs 'Best of' compilation. Mostly I am a Waylon Jennings fan, and I like most of the greats such as Buck Owens, Cash, George Jones etc.
Just to name drop, I have met Buck Owens, Bobby Bare, Conway Twitty, Emmylou Harris and... your mate, Kinky Friedman! LOL! |

Hi, Briant!
Just to update you, there was a major row between the Steve Earle fan & the Toby Fan!
Redneck shut.
But you might like to try this one
http://www.countrymusic.org.uk/forum/
There was a bit of a rumpus there, too, involving the above two plus a few others, but all seems to be quiet there now!
Check it out!
Might see you down there
Do you listen to country radio on the net? |

I've interviewed Conway Twitty, Loreta Lynn, George Hamilton IV and he bought me a CC and dry ginger in the executive suite, Wembly 1969.
We love country, our recent CDs include Tom Russell, Kimmie Rhodes & Willie, Alison Krauss & Robert Plant, Katherine Craig & Brian Willoughby, Haley Sisters, Hayseed Dixie, Bluegrass Greats, The Soundtrack from O Brother Where Art Thou?, and Kendal Carson.
We are off to see Robert Plant & Alison Krauss at Wembly next month, have been to see Gary Perkins & The Breeze, Ian Calford & The Railmen, Iona & Andy recently. We are off to see Kimmie Rhodes at the North Wales Country Festival in September and support our local country venue, The Stable Bar at the George Hotel every Friday we ain't off elsewhere watching live music.
We like most types of country, except the Daniel O' Donnell's of this world, and "that" song is not a George Strait song, it's a John Prine song, written by John Prine and Roger Cook.
I love Bluegrass, especially Alison Krauss & Union Staion, Texas Swing where Bob Wills is still the king, as Waylon would say.
We cannot understand how anybody can say they don't like country as this genre is so eclectic and diverse most modern pop is derived from it in some shape or form anyway, IMHO. Was not the greatest rock n roll star of all time a member of The Grand Ole Oprey? I rest my case.

Oh, Danny boy! Is he still around?
Not what i call country really!Though he did have The Judds & Loretta Lynn on his TV show. I watched those, & those episodes were good.
Love the new Plant-Krauss CD. Brilliant! Enjoy the gigs
I'm thinking about going to see Kimmie Rhodes |

Don't think about it Clive, just do it, she is one hell of singer/song writer. Besides anything else her gigs are such good value, the whole weekend of the North Wales Country Festival has only cost us £64, that's for both of us for all events, Friday, Saturday & Sunday. We are off to our local gig tonite, we need to support live music no matter what it is, IMHO.

Hi Clive (Moshe!) Yes, I've had a look at that site you mentioned. Miss P and White Trash still fighting it out! I don't think I'll join just yet! I recognise some of the other posters from the old days too!
No, I don't listen much to Country on the net, as I have several hundred Country CDs here to play and not enough time! I also have lots of Dylan, Elvis, Sinatra, Buddy Holly, Ricky Nelson, Glen Campbell, Jerry Lee Lewis etc. I've just sent for a Bellamy Brothers CD 'The Lost Tracks' which has some rare tunes that I've been after for a while, but not 'Memorabilia' which has never been issued on CD, and is one of their best songs in my opinion. |

Hi, Briant.
I enjoy a wide range of music, too. Outside of country, one of my fave singers is Ella Fitzgerald. What a voice she had in her prime!
In case anyone wants to check out some country music on the net, here are a couple of links
http://wqyk.com/
and here is a British station

Enjoy! |

Don't know if anyone has seen Martin Taylor, from Nottingham, we saw him on Friday night, he was brilliant. Played country & Irish folk and we were well impressed with his prowess on more than half a dozen instruments :- guitar, mandolin, banjo, harmonica, squeeze box, penny whistle & flute. He has been off the live music scene for a couple of years and was a little nervous, however, he well deserved his standing ovation after his encore.

Hi Clive. April's CMP mag has huge feature on Kinky Friedman that you will enjoy reading I think. One of my photos of him is used on page twenty. It is cut down from a photo of him and (Rita) Jo Thompson a former Miss Texas who later became a top line dance instructor. A few letters about the late John Stewart too, and a review of Dolly's new album etc. |

Hi, Briant.
Yep, the new CMP came thru my letterbox today, but saw the Kinky feature. I will be reading that when i put my specks on.
Well done in having your photos in there! I'll have another look.
I also noticed the review of Dolly's album. I just read the start. Seems to be very enthusiastic- & I agree. It is an excelent album. The reviewer points out it s Dolly's first straight down the line Country album in quite a few years. Nice to have Dolly back doing what she does best! |

The Ricky Skaggs album arrived today. Great stuff from his eighties peak period. 'Highway 40 blues', 'Don't cheat in our hometown', 'You may see me walking' and 'Country Boy' (the Albert Lee humdinger!) I am waiting for albums by 'Diamond Rio',( with One More Day on it) 'Delbert McClinton'( The Sun Medley featuring Danny Gatton on guitar) and 'The Bellamy Brothers Lost tracks'-mostly re-issues of songs from their early albums. |

Talk of Ricky Skaggs leads me to The Whites. their music is somewhat related, & Ricky is married to one of the daughters (Sharon White, I believe)
A fine band in the 80s, not heard much of them since tho they did surface in O Brother, wherev Art Thou? |

Anyone heard the new album by Kathy Mattea? It is titled "Coal" & all the songs relate to coalmining. Mostly old songs, but Kathy breathes new life into them
That girl can sing! |

Not heard that album Clive, then again I don't suppose it will get much air play, although you would think Bob might giveit an airing. Not listened to Bob's country show this week yet, I do Cubs on Wednesday & Thursday evenings and don't finish till 8.
Went to our local venue, The Stable Bar, last night. A guy from near Rotherham, called Pete Jones was on, good night, entertainment wise, but did not enjoy it as much as I could have as lovely lady was away visiting family. He did an old favourite of mine, originally done by Lee Greenwood, "The Wind Beneath My Wings". He also did his very own version of "Ghost Riders In The Sky", which was very different and I have to say very enjoyable.
Someone mentuioned a new Dolly album, what's it called, the last one of hers I bought was "The Grass Is Blue", which I thought was excellent. I thought this was a fairly recent album when I ordered it, late last year, but was surprised to see it was published in 1999, another senior or craft moment

Biker, Dolly's latest album is "Backwoods Barbie". A very good album, all original songs apart from Teatrs of A Clown & Drives Me Crazy-a great version of the latter!
In any case, it is a thoroughly country album, a great sound. I'd highly recomend it.
The Kathy mattea album I heard about when someone posted a clip of Kathy doing one of the songs on an american MB
Kathy has gone in a bit of a folk direction, but still pretty country. she's just veered right away from the mainstream.

Dolly was on American Idol on ITV2 tonight. She did her new single "Jesus & Gravity".
My fave tracks on the album are the title cut, "Backwoods Barbie" and "Drivesz Me Crazy" |

Whilst channel hopping I saw that Clive, and I was appalled by the song, the performance and her ridiculous outfit. I was reminded of Gloria Swanson in 'Sunset Boulevard'. I haven't heard the new album, but her last two were very poor. Is it time for her to retire gracefully before her legend is ruined forever? |

No, I think her latest album is the best she's done in a while.
Jesus & Gravity not one of the best, but a clever lyric. Dolly still has many great years in her. In fact, her tours last year & this are sell outs |

My dear lady has bought me this new Dolly CD, all the way from across the pond, have listened and like some of the tracks, need to listen again properly! We got carried away doing something much more interesting! Still think "The Grass Is Blue" is her best CD in years and years.
Saw "Big Pete Young" last nite, at our local country venue, good entertainer, however, not sure if it was The Bert Weedon or The Les Dawson book of teach yourself to play the guitar he used!

Saw "Double Barrel" on Friday night at The Stable Bar, in their words, "we are just two fat guys from Derby". Fat they maybe, but Tony and Kev, IMHO, are brilliant, they must be, my lovely lady bought 4 of their CDs. So if you get a chance to see these guys, take the opportunity.

Had a quick look at their website - shame they haven't kept it up to date. Nothing on myspace either, so no opportunity to hear them, though titles on their albums suggest they're a pub country tribute act, and a good time guaranteed for all. _________________ Ron |

They may only do covers, but IMHO Double Barrel are a cut above your average pub act and certainly provide a good night's entertainment.
We watched Mick Ford at the Stable Bar at Leadenham this Friday. He sings the real good old country music, favouring Johny Cash and Waylon Jennings. He always does "Are You Sure Hank Done It This Way" for me; not as good as the original, but then there aint many better than Waylon.

Nah
The intro is the same
But the Kid Rock song has meaning, gells together well & doesn't have that irritating shout in it which is supposed to be a warewolf.
Two best tumes around now

I don't have any time for David allan Coe as a person. I watched an old interview with him & does not cast him in a good light
However he is a superb songwriter & has done some excelent discs.
This next isn't one of his great songs, but it does make me smile
