OK, maybe I'm just being cynical but these are some of the Gold Winners last night:
Music programme award
The Dermot O'Leary Show - Murfia Productions for BBC Radio 2
Entertainment award
The Russell Brand Show - BBC Radio 2
Music radio personality of the year
Jonathan Ross - BBC Radio 2 and Off The Kerb for Radio 2
Feature award
Malcolm McLaren's Life and Times in LA: A Radio Movie - Just Radio for BBC Radio 2
Music special award
The Feelgood Factor - Smooth Operations for BBC Radio 2
Gold award
Brian Matthew
Rising star
George Lamb - BBC 6 Music
Now, I'm sure the feature awards are well-deserved but it does look like Douglas has used the awards to justify O'Leary, Brand and Lamb. Either that or the judges don't actually listen to the radio! |

That can be the only reason for some of the above awards!

I nearly fell out of the shower when I heard the news. What a joke. The only award Brand deserves is "Best contribution toward the further ruination of radio 2". At least O'Leary knows his music, though he's not my cup of tea. Ross, I accept, is an acquired taste, but personally I find him abhorrent.
As far as I am concerned, R2 is now a weekday morning only station, with the odd bit of Sunday occasionally. Am I alone? _________________ MiS |

No you aren't alone! I'm finding I'm listening to less Radio 2 and radio in general.

Awards can be a bit like getting a "pep talk" from your boss - what they're really saying is " I've put my neck on the block for you, I' m not going to shout at you, cos you're doing ok ish but look, I know you can do a lot better than this, now get out there and do it" ....
Of course that doesn't apply to all awards - some of them are well deserved and often overdue. |

Now they really are taking the hit and miss!
Who on earth is responsible for these nominations? Lesley Douglas? |

I was a little concerned listening to it as the BBC seemed to be dominating the night. I think the commercial sector isn't always getting votes.
Maybe Channel 4 Radio will poach a few well known broadcasters when it opens? |

Of course I'm delighted that Brian Matthew has been given the Gold Award and warmly appreciate Johnnie Walker's gracious remarks about this on the show this morning. But what a pity that the Daily Telegraph managed to exclude mention of this from its coverage.
Like others, I listen to R2 less and less these days. My only total 'must' now is SOTS. I like to listen to Jeremy Vine, Desmond Carrington and Aled Jones if I'm near a radio when they're on but don't make any special effort to catch up with them on Listen Again. That said, I think Aled has come of age as a broadcaster since moving to R2. I admire Russell Davies' and Bob Harris' programmes but don't often actually hear them. And I really miss Roger Royle on Sunday Half Hour--Father Brian does well enough but is bland by comparison. I can see the day coming when my default listening comes from Classic FM once again.

Nothing at all for either Mark Radcliffe or Stuart Maconie? I don't really mind Dermot O'Leary's programme but fail to see how he is worthier of the Music Programme award than either (or both) of the above. |

Stuart Maconie is infinitely preferable to most of the award "winners". _________________ MiS |

In the PC world of broadcasting shouldn't everyone get a prize?

NO!!
Looking at the judging panel for the Sony awards, it is striking how many names are either actual Radio 2 people or people involved with production companies that depend on a lot of R2 patronage.
Lesley Douglas, Lewis Carnie and Phil Hughes are all senior at R2. Nick Barraclough and John Leonard, both ex R2 and now in charge of Smooth Operations, who make lots of R2 shows. Mark Goodier, another "friend" of the station. The list goes on. What a load of nonsense these awards are. |

It seems a trifle odd to me that two Radio 2 loudmouths (Jonathan Ross and Russell Brand) and a complete dullard (Dermot O'Leary) have been given Sony Awards to the expense of decent, passionate and musically educated broadcasters on the netwoerk.
Nominations should have gone to Mark Radcliffe and Stuart Maconie (although Stuart's Saturday show was axed last month all for the sake of the dire Dermot O'Leary getting an extended show - says it all about Radio 2, doesn't it?), Bob Harris, Johnnie Walker, Mark Lamarr, Paul Jones, Norman Jay, Jools Holland and Paul Gambaccini.
It's broadcasters like these who are gradually being marginalised by Lesley Douglas.
It's sad that loudmouths, unfunny and vile comedians, and bland TV presenters are gradually taking over Radio 2, many of whom are Lesley Douglas' pals. Jazz has become virtually non-existent and old favourites such as Russell Davies, Malcolm Laycock, David Jacobs and Desmond Carrington aren't even considered for a Sony or given any kind of recognition.
I'm surprised Brian Matthew got the Gold award. If Lesley Douglas had her way then it would have probably gone to the excruciating Elaine Paige...
Are the Sony awards a fix? I never used to think so, but I do now. |

It does make me wonder if the commercial radio sector has got a chance? BBC seem to dominate the awards. A lot of the judges also work for BBC Radio. Is it the money the BBC is offering now?
A lot awards for BBC. BBC World Service, Russell Brand, George Lamb, Jonathan Ross and Dermot O Leary.
I would say congrats to Brian Matthew as he's been doing his show for years. Good stats saying that Sounds Of 60's on BBC R2 gets more listeners between 9-930am on a Saturday.

Planet Rock winning digital station of the year may end up being rather ironic if it shuts down, I hope it dosen't close. |

Good news--but more listeners than whom? And do we know how the other 90 minutes of the show fares?

You have to remember that Mark O wrote that
Yeah Mark tell us what you mean please.
Also please note our honourable presenter's name is Brian Matthew
Also be aware that he won a Sony Gold in 1996, though I don't know which section the award was for.

Media coverage of Brian Matthew's award strikes me as being distinctly on the slender side compared with that rightly accorded to other winners. I can find nothing on the official site and the Telegraph managed not to mention it at all in its article on the event. And BBC News website coverage is somewhat cursory, to say the least.
Alas-why doesn't this surprise me?

Don't forget that the judges don't have an open book from which to choose their winners. As the saying goes, you've got to be in it to win it, and you can be sure R2 will only have chosen to enter presenters who reflect the desired image of the station. |
