On Wednesday 11th June Jeremy was talking to a 58 year old woman who carries a knife for her own protection.
Personally there is no excuse for people to carry a Knife or even a gun. The way the country is going with violent crime around I congratulate the women who is trying to protect herself. I do hope she doesn't get herself into deep trouble. |

So you think she is wrong?

But you congratulate her?
I think she is more likely to get the knife taken off her & used on her by an attacker, in the unlikely event that she is attacked. _________________ His name was ernie ........ and he drove the fastest milk cart in the west..... |

My thoughts entirely, Ern. I'm not going to comment though because Mark will accuse me of stalking him! _________________ ONline, ONdigital and ONtherocks: BBC Radio 2. Eleanor Rigby, wearing the face that she keeps in a jar by the door. |

Yes, but are you for or against it? _________________ ONline, ONdigital and ONtherocks: BBC Radio 2. Eleanor Rigby, wearing the face that she keeps in a jar by the door. |

Errrrrrrr I'm not against defending yourself. I'm against people carrying weapons. She's not out to harm anyone, but if she was confronted would she use it? I don't think she answered that question? |

We have family in New York City, in both Brooklyn and The Bronx. The city is a lot quieter now (since 9/11) but back in 1979 when Mrs W and I got engaged, it was like the Fort Apache film, crazy stuff on the subway, which led to the red-beretted Guardian Angels and armed cops walking up the carriages etc.
I remember a subway journey from E.242nd St (top of Bronx) to somewhere deep in Brooklyn, longest subway journey ever (goes the full length of Bronx and Manhattan then under the river and deep into Brooklyn, might have taken nearly 2 hours for twenty-odd miles. Anyway it was some family party we were going to and we didn't drive then and the train had quite an assortment of the wife's family from kids to great Aunties and such. Nothing untoward happened on that journey, it was after 9pm and you just kept your head down and looked at family.
One of the Aunties told me at the party that she carried a gun on the train, she'd seen so much bad stuff over the years, she wanted to feel safe, but as Ernie says if a mugger had grabbed her handbag he had also grabbed her gun
