There's no Tech section on here but I hope someone can help.

How can I find exactly how much memory is being used at a particular time on my computer?

If you are using Vista then Ctrl + Alt + Del , then choose "Start Task Manager" , in the top of the box click on the tab labelled "Performance" and that should show the memory being used.

Hope that helps Very Happy

I couldn't be 100% sure but the Ctrl Alt Del feature should be the same on XP. It won't reset your computer though so no worries there.

I don't use XP much (I'm a MacOSX user most of the time) but there are better 3rd party applications (often free) that will report this stuff to you as well. A quick Google search will reveal what, where, etc.

Thanks johnump have just tried it!

Robbie I'm still having problems that we discussed on Jezzas I think you described it as a memory leak. I used Reg Cure and it's not happening as much but I get errors when ending programs, but not all the time.

I'll monitor the useage and see what comes up.

Helen, you may well have done (or considered doing) this but I'll advise it all the same - run a Spybot scan using a reputable spybot sweeper/eliminator. If it's a Memory Leak (which is generally created by your browser visiting a page that contains lots of Javascript and where the memory hasn't been "given back" at the end of the session), it's worth investigating the cause.

Sometimes - although not all times - it can be due to an unwelcome guest in your system, in which case you need to chuck it out.

Have a look at http://www.filehippo.com for a range of freebie options. I tend to rely on more than one app - AdAware (which most people seem to use), Spybot Search & Destroy and one I have on my PCs which is a Kaspersky program that's paid for.

I'm not saying it's due to spyware, but it's worth eliminating this possibility all the same.

Hi Robbie,

I run Spy Bot and Ad Aware regularly and it's just the usual type of things that come up. I think you suggested Reg Cure or something like. I use it but it has not eliminated it.

At first I thought it was BBC iplayer that I had installed (I was testing it from last June) and the problems seemed to start around that time. I uninstalled it and the problems lessened.

The computer just comes to a grinding halt and I have to shut down and re start.

I'll try monitoring what is being used when I'm doing my usual things.

That might have been Mr. Dowell. I don't know Reg Cure and as Macs don't have Registry-type problems I'm a step removed, to be honest.

That's quite possibly the root of the problem. iPlayer is built around Javascript (although it uses Adobe Flash for media file compression and decompression) so there's the link as I referred to above.

Try installing and running CCleaner to look for possible issues (it has a button called "Issues" funnily enough). It's very good. I cleaned up my wife's XP/SP2 PC the other day using CCleaner and a combination of other utilities and it's now running much better.

One thing about the newer Macs - you just don't have all this nonsense! Smile

Robbie I have CCleaner but I don't think I've used it for a while. Will run it tomorrow.

Maybe it was that one you told me about!
