Panorama puts Primark's claims that it can deliver cheap, fast fashion without breaking ethical guidelines to the test.
Children in poor countries are working in conditions you wouldn't expect your clothes would be made.

We know this has been going on for years. It's time for the rag / clothing trade to get tough, which Primark are doing. |

It's consumers wanting goods at rock bottom prices that drives this trade. The only way to stop it is for consumers to pay more for home-sourced products. It won't happen though, because most people don't care as much as they might claim to. _________________ ONline, ONdigital and ONtherocks: BBC Radio 2. BBC "News" advertising its own programmes again. Funny how they didnt cover the Channel 4 programme on the subject.
So putting the kids out of work & making them turn to begging or prostitution is going to help how exactly? _________________ His name was ernie ........ and he drove the fastest milk cart in the west..... |

Primark weren't aware of what was going on. --
On the subject of Primark.. I went into our local store the other week. It was like I walking into a Jumble Sale, all the clothes and shoes were thrown on the floor by customers. I know the staff were picking them up, but I wouldn't like to see some of those shoppers houses. It's a disgrace. |

Every major UK retailer and almost all high street brands source the vast majority of their products from the far east. They all have to be on their toes in this regard, but it's extremely difficult to know what's going on at some factory in a remote region of China (for example) when your back's turned. My wife is a buyer for a large UK retailer and they employ an army of inspectors to make spot checks all over Asia, but even then those same inspectors can succumb to corruption so how can you possibly keep tabs on what exactly is going on?
Like I said above, if UK consumers are that concerned about the issue of exploitative labour there's one simple thing they can do. But the majority won't because they're either lazy or hypocrites.
The Panorama programme exposes nothing the western world hasn't been aware of for a long time and is typical of the "tabloid' nature of the programme's journalism of recent years. The fact that it's top 'n tailed by Jeremy Vine is a good reflection of the fact, let's be honest. _________________ ONline, ONdigital and ONtherocks: BBC Radio 2. The discussion with Julian Worricker yesterday was a reminder that there's no snap answer to this.
