I think Dermot O'Leary is an excellent presenter-his show on Saturday afternoons is first class.
I think he would be an excellent choice for one of the daytime shows on Radio 2-maybe as a replacement for Ken Bruce. |

We want presenters with real personalities for daytime, but not too much personality. The music specialists will never be on during daytime because most people are at work during that time and only have the radio on in the background. _________________ His name was ernie ........ and he drove the fastest milk cart in the west..... |

They tried him once for Ken, about a year ago. I've never heard him again. I didn't think much of him. |

I don't know what the answer is, but Lesley Douglas created the mess by moving Johnnie from Drive. She has a hell of a lot to answer for IMHO.

There are those who want to hear the exact same show over and over (Wogan, Bruce & Wright seem to specialise in this). This seems to be a winning forumla for a large part of the audience that are change-a-phobic, but if every show was like that the network would atrophy.
Then again some things dont work on radio despite the best intentions. Russell Brand and some of Evans latest shows come across as self indulgent. Evan seemed to have found a happy middle ground for the first couple of years, but now is getting a bit too up himself.
I think Douglas desperately needs to change things in daytime as every show is either way too complacent or up itself right now, probably because all the presenters have been doing their shows for too long. |
That is interesting Ernie. It’s really dangerous to shake things up. People like “familiar”. Familiar is warm and friendly – it’s safe, secure and it makes people feel at one with the world. Some shows have the power of life and death over listeners. Imagine for example; if Sarah Kennedy played her show-tune ten minutes early just for fun – a tiny change but one that would have thousands of overweight, middle-aged, balding stockbrokers running for the 0725 from the end of road – The Ambulance Service would be in meltdown. Casualty departments would be overrun. It would be chaos out there!
The same can be said of Drivetime. Even now when I hear – “ He’s here!” I think. OMG! Is it 5 o’clock already? Then I remember Wogan is on holiday again. It’s the same with Chris’ show – it has a format – a routine which is embedded in the lives of 6 million listeners- you can’t just change it- it has to be a subtle change- gently over time. A show is like Boat Race Cox in people’s lives – it provides all sorts of references to where you are and what you should be doing. A regular show becomes part of who you are and the way you go about your business. A big change in a show – leaves people feeling lost, insecure and ultimately searching for the security of something familiar they can rely on. |

Agree 100% with you there Rachel!
I remember when Ken Bruce switched from having Popmaster at separate times, I really missed the 2nd, later, one as it was a time check for me!

Of course you're right, and little wonder why many of us were against Evans' appointment, because we knew the change would not necessarily be a good one (not for us, anyway!)
I ask myself, can Evans do familiar? As JW points out in his excellent autobiography, little changed from John Dunn's show to JW's (I think he said hiring Sally was the big change) yet Johnnie still made it his and built the audience. Sure, Evans has built the inherited audience slightly, on the back of huge marketing and media attention (I guess a couple of Sony's didn't do any harm), but there still seems some edginess to the show that's grating - stamping his personality by talking too long and trivial with his team and then cutting over songs because - shock - he's got so much to tell us! And as was discussed above, his interviews are getting worse, and Fox is always rushing (take a breath and let the interviewee say more than one sentence at a time!) Sporty Saunders' bit is still pretty good and well paced, but his bit parts with Evans before and after are getting tedious. Master and his puppet, indeed.
Evans has brought in new stuff after a rocky start, and seemed to settle down a bit, but there's always the feel of tweaks and changes here and there - it'll never reach the familiarity that I associate with other successful shows (Wogan, Wright, Bruce etc). Heck, even Chris Moyles is rigid in his format of features and timing, and he pulls in big audiences. Maybe I'm unfair comparing Moyles and Evans? Let's wait until they're both on breakfast..!
Change, when carefully introduced, can be good on radio, but not as was exemplified last week on Drivetime. There have been some great comments in this discussion, so I guess that's one thing we can sort of thank Evans for! |

With synchronised swimming the other week and bubbles tonight, I think Chris has forgotten he's not on TV anymore... |

heh. No, they had a bloke creating big fancy bubbles and he was very enthusiastic and genial... but, ultimately, it's quite visual. |
