We've now had about 30 hours of continuous rain in these parts and it doesn't sound as though it's going to stop any time soon.

Mrs W is over at Ashington (about 30 miles away), visiting our son and his family, and so many roads are closed because of flooding that I'm not totally sure whether she'll be coming back tonight or staying over there till tomorrow.

But it sounds even worse in Wales and the West.

Any comments?

Ian.

It was supposed to be rain most of the day here in Cheshire, but it's been dry up to now with some bright sunny spells, although short lived. Black clouds are looming so more rain no doubt.

Torrential rain overnight and it's running off the lawn at the back so it will take time to dry out before it can be cut!

Hope she makes it back from Ashington Ian!

I was at a customer near Henley-in-Arden/Stratford-upon-Avon and country lanes were turning into fast-flowing streams. Near us some pavements/footpaths close to the River Avon (e.g. at Bretford, Wolston) were raised up on foot-high stilts many years ago.

And yesterday an old house that my in-laws rent out has lost two bits of gutter. Rain water has been streaming down the back wall, has soaked through the old Edwardian brickwork. The tenants have had to move their baby out of the back room and the kitchen window is letting in water. Not much builders can do while it's still raining..... I expect much of this year's rent collected will be spent on repairs!!

Ian,

Just seen the floods in Morpeth on the news so I expect you wife will stay over in Ashington, unless she comes down the coast and into Newcastle.

Interesting posts on several counts.

Mrs W just rang and is hoping to return later this evening. The rain is a little more intermittent now but there are still some heavy bursts. The news showed huge problems in Morpeth, Rothbury and the Gosforth area of Newcastle, as well as further afield in the Pickering area of North Yorkshire.

I well remember Bretford and Wolston from my days in Coventry. Indeed, before taking up with me, Mrs W had a boyfriend who lived in Wolston. I also remember Brinklow, which didn't seem to have changed much from 1976 when we re-visited in 2001.

Hi Ian,

Yes I recall you were in these parts and at Walsgrave Hospital (which has been rebuilt and is now the 'University Hospital')

Brinklow lost one of it's pubs a while back. A developer eyed the large carpark so bought the pub, knockd it down and built several houses.

That's too common an occurence these parts, the corridor between the A5 and the M6, between Nuneaton and Rugby, is a forgotten part of Warwickshire, it has several fine villages but nothing to attract tourists, so quite a few pubs have gone, the Fox at Pailton went a the same way, and I think Stretton has lost two pubs.

Today my shed roof is very damp Mad

Thanks, John.

Is the White Lion at Pailton still going? In my day it was one of the few places where you could get a bar meal on a Sunday evening.

Yes, I knew that Walsgrave had been replaced (and demolished?), as a friend of mine from those days (1972/6) was still there quite recently.

That A5 /M6 corridor was quite attractive in my day. Perhaps you're better off without the tourists!

Mrs W got safely home about 8:30 last night. But the rain has continued today, albeit in more showery form. Fortunately where we are is on quite high ground, so no flooding yet. Not too far from us, Morpeth and Rothbury have been pretty rough.

Hi Ian,

I spoke to my Dad who is in Woolsington last night as there it's fairly low round there, but no problems thank goodness.

It looks really bad in Morpeth. I've memories of spending New Year there many years ago, some friends had the pub on the left as you come in from Newcastle. I've forgotten the name and they've long since moved on.

Woolsington is the name of Newcastle airport isn't it?

Hi LEE,

Yes it is, and is about a mile up the road from the village.

Yes, we were there just a few weeks ago on a weekday.

Yes I would say 90% of all the original buildings are gone. The main block and the maternity (where my kids were born) were completelty torn down to make car parks and behind all that (so, well away from Clifford Bridge Road) are the spanking new blocks. Quite impressive really.

Unfortunately, although everything's new, the MRSA bug has caused havoc earlier this year.

In a way yes, those villages are maybe better off, with nothing touristy the housing is cheaper there (than say south of Coventry) so folks who actually work on the farms etc can actually afford to buy somewhere in that corridor. Some places like Monks Kirby are still very select. I think the two pubs (Bell Inn and Denbigh Arms) are still there, the Bell has a Spanish menu.

Our back lawn is a swamp, I stepped on it last night and almost skidded on my arse! Laughing I had a close look (at the skid) and the whole bottom section of the lawn appears to be 100% clover now.

The lousy weather has stopped us doing anything in the garden. The shed needs totally new felt but need a couple of dry days to dry the roof and then refelt it.

I had planned to make a little 'meadow' in one corner with just wild flowers but as I say the whole place is like a swamp. I have collected a lot of wild flowers; I've not picked them in 'the wild' as that's not allowed, but I collect them from customer's gravel drives and borders (before the landscapers/gardeners come in with the monthly weed-killer). So there's about 30 little pots sitting on the patio with wild flowers growing in them (hmm, not many have actually flowered!!) I suppose most of the plants are regarded as WEEDS but in my eyes (and in my wild flower book) they are wild flowers ! Very Happy

Thanks, John.

Goodness, yes, I remember the Bell at Monk's Kirby. We had our Christmas do there once and I also went there one Friday night with a group of junior doctors who were leaving. How the memories come rushing back!

We haven't personally been too affected by the floods, except that I think the sheer volume of water on the roof has caused a little to leak into the bathroom.

Hope your garden soon recovers.

Ian.
