Not much incentive provided by BBC1 to stay home after 8pm on New Year's Eve.

8:00--Tired old Casualty with all the familiar posturing and polarisation.

8:50--News with sordid details of Saddam Hussein hanging.

9:00--Quiz of the Year, which might have been passable with Anne Robinson and Philip Schofield but under Graham Norton was slow-moving and full of crude innuendo. After 30 minutes we switched to something we'd pre-recorded.

New Year's Eve Party--good as far as it went but too little time allocated after midnight.

New Year's Day Evening--OK if you like EastEnders but patchy otherwise. Vicar of Dibley was too thin (in plot!) to stretch to a full hour. But full marks for the excellent Wind in the Willows, of which I saw about the last two-thirds.

Comments from other armchair critics?

Ian.

!Wind In The Willows" was very good. Missed the last half hour. Very well done indeed, faithful to the book & no gimmicks.
New Years Eve watched a bit of Jools on BBC2. Mostly a bit weak, I thought. Only tuned in to see Amy Winehouse. Switched to videos after midninght.
Watched about half an hour of the BBC4 prog on the Archers New Years Day, but thought it a bit bitty.

Sarah Jane Adventures and Torchwood were great last night, but I agree that Sunday was poor. I listened to the radio instead!

Is wind in the willows becoming a generational thing?

In my opinion, Terry Jones made a better Toad, Eric Idle was a very good Ratty, and, while I have little time normally for Steve Coogan, he made a very good mole, in the last adaptation.

Opinions Please

The Sarah-Jane spin-off was the only programme I watched yesterday - indeed possibly the only thing I've actually watched since Christmas Day.

Thankfully I have plenty of books and my new Il-2 Sturmovik: 1946 combat flight sim to keep me occupied since there's nothing on the TV.

Think the only thing I watched in full over Christmas was "It Started With Swap Shop". I spent a bit of time scanning through the stations I can now get with my new Freeview box and watched a bit of The Two Ronnies which one station seemed to be showing all day Boxing Day.

But TV is crap all the time. I prefer to buy a few DVD box sets of complete series and make my own schedules - currently I have the 1st series of Boon, 1st series of Minder, 2nd series of Cheers and the Beatles Anthology series to keep me going.

I watched the swap shop thing...it was actually quite good wasn't it...! You are so right about the tv...has spoilt my chrimbo....used to look forward to a glass of something and something decent on the telly...!
If you are buying dvd box sets may I recomend "Life on Mars" (great 70s soundtrack) If you haven't seen it...its brilliant it has quite a cult following! Very Happy

Festive TV this year was utterly terrible, I know it's never good but this year it was shocking.

I watched the Swop Shop prog it was good I really enjoyed it.As (after defecting from TISWAS ) I spent many a Saturday morning in front of the tv watching the original. Then Saturday Superstore and then through the children mainly I also remember Going Live with Pip and Sarah.

Also watched the Sarah Jane Mysteries. I thought it was well made, obviously aimed at a younger audience than Torchwood and Dr Who but still pretty watchable.

talking of Torchwood (wont say to much incase someone is planning on catching up this evening on BBC2) very good ending the the first series.

News years eve I stayed in and agreed with almost everything the grumpy new year people were saying on BBC2. That must mean I'm old and grumpy myself Wink

Robin Hood was brilliant possibly my favourite of the christmas offerings.
I'm glad they are making a new series.

I enjoyed it while watching, but when you think about the plot it made very little sense at all - even by Torchwood standards!

Well it's like a soap opera, anything can happen, it will all probably make sense three episodes into the next series Smile
