I'm liking this tune alot, & thinking of buying the album. Anyone know if the rest of it is as good as this?
This song has been getting to me. All those years he was gamekeeper at Emmerdale have paid off in his songwritting! |

This album (and the artist himself) has drawn a lot of flak over on the BBC Music and Folk boards, and in the wider world, as a heated debate rages over its credentials and qualification as a true folk work. I'm no expert in the field, but the sleevenotes indicate that all the songs are based on or inspired by various West Country legends and events. Four of the songs are traditional arr Lakeman, the rest he wrote himself.
The music is a very melodic folk/pop mix, and that, as much as anything else, I suspect, is what has got the trad world steamed up - there's no finger-in-the-ear stuff. Lakeman does not have a very distinctive voice, but he's had some assistance in that department from some high-profile folk names (Steve Knightley and Cara Dillon) and instrumentally plays a mean tenor guitar and violin (much to the fore on the first single Lady Of The Sea), with a very fine backing band and production (much has been made of the major-label remixing, but since I don't have the original, which is no longer available anyway, I can't comment).
The White Hare was particularly radio-friendly and in truth is probably the most bland of the tracks. Many others, however, would, in another time now past, have attracted airplay in the same way that Fairport, Steeleye and Lindisfarne used to. It's not truly acoustic but nor is it heavy - there's no rock-style bass and percussion. It needs more than one proper listen, but it does grow on you; I was initially rather dismissive of the album and only got it on impulse as it was part of a special online-retailer offer, but I have come to quite like it and am pleased I did. _________________ Ron |

Not surprised re Cara Dillon - she's his sister-in-law.... _________________ Author: “To the Ends of the Earth: A Snapshot of Aviation in North-Eastern Siberia, Summer 1992”
